El aprendizaje de la construcción arquitectónica a partir de los contenidos procedimentales y actitudinales

    Get PDF

Urban regeneration through retroftting social housing: the AURA 3.1 prototype

As a large proportion of housing stock does not meet the current demands for energy and comfort (leading to high levels of obsolescence and vulnerability), the annual rate of energy upgrades for the existing stock must be increased. The AURA Strategy is an intervention methodology which focuses on the regeneration of neighbourhoods or obsolete urban fabrics which sufer from high levels of architectural, urban and socioeconomic vulnerability. Within this context, the AURA 3.1 prototype was developed for the Solar Decathlon Europe 2019 Competition. The project was based around a sustainable construction strategy for the urban regeneration of obsolete residential neighbourhoods, through the reuse of existing buildings considering Mediterranean climate and energy. The Poligono San Pablo neighbourhood was chosen as the case study. This article presents the main retroft action: the juxtaposition on the existing building of a structural-architectural system which provides new technological and spatial features. Quantitative data regarding the validity and efectiveness of the AURA Strategy could be collected from the monitoring of the Pavilion prototype during the competition. Two frst prizes were won in contests with on-site measurements: Comfort conditions and House Functioning. Third place was also obtained in the Sustainability contest, thus confrming the enormous possibilities the AURA Strategy has for sustainable urban regeneration in retroftting social housing, within the limitations of the competition

A ferrocement patent for emergency housing: the technological hut

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the comparison between the Spanish architects de La Hoz (Madrid,1924) and José María García de Paredes (Seville, 1924) projects for ‘ultra-cheap’ housing in Cordoba, how it evolved from a British patent named Ctesiphon, and the study of some of existing building serected following this construction system. The aim of this article is to stablish the evolution of the system from the original patent into a new possibility for low-income social housing. This system was used to erect new developments in the 1950s that would relocate people living in huts during thedictatorship era in Spain, thus new “technological huts” were proposed and erected. The research process includes an analysis of the documents and literature available of the patent and the projects themselves, and in situ tests (infrared thermography and samples extraction) will allow to establish the relation between its original inventor, the dissemination of his works in publications from thatera, and the Spanish company that subsequently, as a concession of the original patent, introduced that system in Spanish architecture. Analysis of the original patent document allows to study the primitive system as it was invented and for what uses it was conceived. Thus, such a methodology supports an establishment of the technical innovations achieved in order to adapt the system to the Andalusian environment at that time and its use for housin

Correlations between GIS-Based Urban Building Densification Analysis and Climate Guidelines for Mediterranean Courtyards

    Get PDF
This study identifies and proposes A GIS-based exploration of the relationships between aspect ratio of inner courtyards, porosity of the urban fabric and the climatic factors where it is located. To perform that comparison, morphological and measurement methods have been used to delineate spatial boundaries of urban densification. This methodology has been applied to a case study in Spain, where regulation establishes several climatic zones. Examples of cities in these zones have been examined to establish possible correlations. This paper analyses the particularities of these different urban scenarios, considering the effects of climate on the real urban densification. The purpose of this study is to find a relationship between the historical inner courtyards dimensions and the climate of the zone where they are located. In order to frame the real thermal behaviour of the inner courtyard in the context of the vernacular typologies studied, a representative sample of inner courtyards has been selected. The monitoring data presented allow quantifying the courtyard’s ability to temper the maximum temperature values

Student competitions as a learning method with a sustainable focus in higher education: the University of Seville “Aura Projects” in the “Solar Decathlon 2019”

In recent times, teaching in higher education has undergone a significant transformation. Current advances and innovative proposals in educational science research are centred around a transdisciplinary approach, the so-called integrated curriculum and the incorporation of the transversal concept of sustainability. In summary, the so-called learning processes through problem-solving. The Solar Decathlon Competition is the most prestigious international university student competition for sustainable habitat. The aim of this article is to show how the Aura Strategy, developed by the University of Seville Solar Deca thlon Team to participate in the Solar Decathlon 2019 Latin America and Europe competitions, is aligned with the aforementioned proposals. Among the results, the generation of a transforming teaching network of the departmental structures in the University of Seville is to be highlighted. These transformations in teaching lead students to new, broader and more holistic approaches to study, as well as new capabilities and skills. The question of interdisciplinarity requires new tools and research lines to achieve successful implementation in higher education, and the participation in the Solar Decathlon Competition is one of the

Composite materials made from organic matrices are generally combustible. It is necessary to determine in each case their behaviour under fire and determine whether they fulfil the requirements of the applicable standards in order to match each material to each specific application. Polyester polymer mortar is a material that provides much better mechanical characteristics than traditional mortars but one of its weak points is fire reaction, in this paper, fire reaction of a particular polyester polymer mortar is determined based on Spanish standards, in order to establish its suitability as a coating and cladding material for building constructio

[EN] This communication is developed within the activities of the project funded by the Valencian Regional Government “The heritage consideration of the social Modern Movement’s public housing. The Virgen del Carmen group, revitalization, and energetic updating (MOMOvivso). In this project, a Modern Movement heritage social housing research is proposed to progress in the preservation of this architecture. Accordingly, a methodological model is made and applied to Valencia’s 614 housing estate, placed in the suburb zone named “El Cabañal”. This residential complex was designed by the architects Fernando M. García-Ordóñez and Juan M. Dexeus Beatty, and it was built between 1958 and 1962. It was developed under the new social housing regulatory framework, which considers different configurations, as well as new constructive techniques, aimed at standardizing the quality of their systems and components and improving the dwelling’s indoor comfort. The present communication is a summary of the analysis process leading to ideation of a comprehensive methodology for the buildings envelope characterization which has been performed under the referred regulatory framework and applied to different types of buildings. For this purpose, three action lines have been proposed: analysis of documentation and contemporary regulations, an inspection report with the visits carried out, and the envelope non-destructive testing.Roa-Fernández, J.; Galán-Marín, C.; Rivera-Gómez, C.; Palomares-Figueres, MT.; Sola Caraballo, J.
