Commensurate-Incommensurate Magnetic Phase Transition in Magnetoelectric Single Crystal LiNiPO
Neutron scattering studies of single-crystal LiNiPO reveal a spontaneous
first-order commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition. Short- and
long-range incommensurate phases are intermediate between the high temperature
paramagnetic and the low temperature antiferromagnetic phases. The modulated
structure has a predominant antiferromagnetic component, giving rise to
satellite peaks in the vicinity of the fundamental antiferromagnetic Bragg
reflection, and a ferromagnetic component giving rise to peaks at small
momentum-transfers around the origin at . The wavelength of the
modulated magnetic structure varies continuously with temperature. It is argued
that the incommensurate short- and long-range phases are due to
spin-dimensionality crossover from a continuous to the discrete Ising state.
These observations explain the anomalous first-order transition seen in the
magnetoelectric effect of this system
Habitability: CAMELOT 4
During 1988 to 1989 the NASA/USRA Advanced Design Program sponsored research and design efforts aimed at developing habitability criteria and at defining a habitability concept as a useful tool in understanding and evaluating dwellings for prolonged stays in extraterrestrial space. The Circulating Auto sufficient Mars-Earth Luxurious Orbital Transport (CAMELOT) was studied as a case in which the students would try to enhance the quality of life of the inhabitants by applying architectural design methodology. The study proposed 14 habitability criteria considered necessary to fulfill the defined habitability concept, which is that state of equilibrium that results from the interaction between components of the Individual Architecture Mission Complex, which allows a person to sustain physiological homeostatis, adequate performance, and acceptable social relationships. Architecture, design development, refinements and revisions to improve the quality of life, new insights on artificial gravity, form and constitution problems, and the final design concept are covered
Effect of Charged Scalar Loops on Photonic Decays of a Fermiophobic Higgs
Higgs bosons with very suppressed couplings to fermions ("Fermiophobic Higgs
bosons", h_f) can decay to two photons (\gamma\gamma) with a branching ratio
significantly larger than that expected for the Standard Model Higgs boson for
m_{h_f}<150 GeV. Such a particle would give a clear signal at the LHC and can
arise in the Two Higgs Doublet Model (type I) in which h_f -> \gamma\gamma is
mediated by W^+ and charged Higgs boson (H^+) loops. We show that the H^+ loops
can cause both constructive and destructive contributions with a magnitude
considerably larger than the anticipated precision in the measurement of the
photonic decay channel at future hadron and lepton colliders.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, clarifications added, one reference added,

Caracterización quÃmica y cuantificación del rendimiento de extracción de pigmento en siete accesiones mexicanas de Bixa orellana
Achiote (Bixa orellana) is a plant used for obtaining a natural dye rich on carotenoids (mainly bixin and norbixin); it is also the plant species with the highest content of tocotrienols in nature. In the present work, the pigment extraction yield of seven Mexican accessions of Bixa orellana was quantified. Also color parameters and content of tocotrienols, tocopherols, norbixin, bixin, total phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity were evaluated in the corresponding annatto extracts. The highest percentage of pigment extraction yield was obtained with KOH (4.84%). Accessions 43 (L*= 4.01 ± 0.79, C*= 7.33 ± 1.07, h= 25.76 ± 6.35) and 50 (L*= 3.17 ± 0.64, C*= 6.81 ± 0.53, h= 26.41 ± 4.41) had the lowest color values, meaning these accessions had a darker and redder color. Four accessions showed the highest content of bixin: accession 48 (3.1%), 45 (2.6%) 43 (2.4%) and 47 (2.2%). Accession 50 had showed the highest content of total phenolic compounds and of tocotrienols (T3), mainly the isoform δ-T3 (5.03 ± 0.64 mg g−1 Seed Dry Weight), as well as the highest antioxidant capacity. Fil: Raddatz Mota, D.. Fragility and hysteretic creep in frictional granular jamming
The granular jamming transition is experimentally investigated in a
two-dimensional system of frictional, bi-dispersed disks subject to
quasi-static, uniaxial compression at zero granular temperature. Currently
accepted results show the jamming transition occurs at a critical packing
fraction . In contrast, we observe the first compression cycle exhibits
{\it fragility} - metastable configuration with simultaneous jammed and
un-jammed clusters - over a small interval in packing fraction (). The fragile state separates the two conditions that define
with an exponential rise in pressure starting at and an exponential
fall in disk displacements ending at . The results are explained
through a percolation mechanism of stressed contacts where cluster growth
exhibits strong spatial correlation with disk displacements. Measurements with
several disk materials of varying elastic moduli and friction coefficients
, show friction directly controls the start of the fragile state, but
indirectly controls the exponential slope. Additionally, we experimentally
confirm recent predictions relating the dependence of on . Under
repetitive loading (compression), the system exhibits hysteresis in pressure,
and the onset increases slowly with repetition number. This friction
induced hysteretic creep is interpreted as the granular pack's evolution from a
metastable to an eventual structurally stable configuration. It is shown to
depend upon the quasi-static step size which provides the only
perturbative mechanism in the experimental protocol, and the friction
coefficient which acts to stabilize the pack.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
