    Resolving the Interstellar Medium at the Peak of Cosmic Star Formation

    The interstellar medium feeds both the formation of stars and the growth of black holes, making it a key ingredient in the evolution of galaxies. With the advent of the Atacama Large Millimeter/ submillimeter Array (ALMA), we can now probe the interstellar medium within high-redshift galaxies in increasingly exquisite detail. Our recent ALMA observations map the molecular gas and dust continuum emission in sub-millimetre-selected galaxies on 1-5 kpc scales, revealing significant differences in how the gas, dust continuum, and existing stellar emission are distributed within the galaxies. This study demonstrates the power of ALMA to shed new light on the structure and kinematics of the interstellar medium in the early Universe, suggesting that the interpretation of such observations is more complex than typically assumed.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, published on The Messenger, No. 173 (September 2018

    Abstract. The paper proposes to trace the evolution of Uruguayan carnival from the viewpoint of left-wing movements, from its beginnings to its evolution as a tool to resist the military and dictatorial government that lasted from 1973 to 1985. In this period the conception of the carnival changed significantly, from being an evasion spectacle to a tool in the resistance movement. Special attention is given to the analysis of the the consequences of censorship in Murga spectacles, as it contributed to the consolidation of the tablado as not only a space for collective entertainment but as a space for political and aesthetic resistance

    La complejidad de la arquitectura como arte y ciencia, exige la aplicación de diversos métodos, técnicas y formas de enseñanza abiertos a la creatividad, es por ello que se plantea este estudio teórico–práctico, probado en cinco semestres consecutivos en la carrera de arquitectura de la Universidad Nacional Experimental del Táchira (UNET). La carrera de arquitectura UNET consta de tres bloques: inicio, desarrollo y finalización, recorridos por un eje transversal llamado Proyectos, sobre cuyo inicio se presentó una ponencia en el Congreso del 2012 de Arquitectonics, titulada «La enseñanza del círculo hermenéutico en la formación inicial del arquitecto». En este caso se hacía referencia a la experiencia llevada a cabo en el segundo semestre, cuando el estudiante comienza a fundamentar sus ideas con la ayuda de la definición de su propia arquitectura, basada en los vértices vitruvianos: firmitas, utilitas y venustas (Vitruvio tr.2004). De esta manera se va introduciendo el tema del círculo hermeneútico, propuesto por Ricoeur (2002), llevado a la arquitectura por Muntañola (2002), y a la enseñanza de la arquitectura como poética, por Linares (2006). En esta ocasión se incluye un estudio enmarcado en la experiencia académica del Laboratorio de Investigación Arquitectónica (LIA), en cuanto a tutorías y asesorías de proyectos finales, es decir en el tercer y último bloque de la carrera de arquitectura UNET.Peer Reviewe

    First Approach to Screening Endocrine Disruption Activity in Sediments from the Uruguay River (Uruguay Coast)

    The Uruguay river basin supports intensive agricultural and forest production, and receives municipal sewage discharge and industrial effluent. Therefore, the river receives xenobiotic compounds which can be distributed in sediments, biota, water and particulate matter. There is evidence of the ability of several of these compounds to interfere with the endocrine system and the sediments are an important source. The aim of this study was to determine whether exposure of immature Cyprinus carpio to Uruguay river sediments undergo physiological and endocrine alterations. A 30-day semi-static assay was performed using sediments from four sites along the Uruguay river and compared with an unexposed group in dechlorinated water as a negative control. The results showed that plasma vitellogenin levels increased along the river, and significant differences were found in exposed fish. Significant difference in hepatosomatic index was observed in fish exposed to sediment from an industrial site. In the histological analysis, only reproductive stage of males showed differences, where the number of primary spermatocyte accumulations was lower in exposed ones, and some exposed individuals from industrial sites presented with testis-ova. Our results suggest that the Uruguay river sediments are a source of endocrine-disrupting compounds available to the aquatic organisms

    Crop Protection Compounds: A Source of Endocrine Disruptors in Uruguay?

    The intensive use of agrochemicals in agriculture has been raised the concern about their potential effects on human health and the environment. In this way, regarding crop protection compounds a complex frameworks and restrictions had been established in several countries, particularly for compounds identified as endocrine disruptors. In Uruguay, the General Direction of Agricultural Services is the agency responsible for registry, but the authorization process does not consider the potential effects on endocrine system. Uruguay has significantly increased the use of crop protection compounds, of which several of them have been identified as endocrine disruptors and the environmental risks associated have not been studied. The aim of this study was to be bridging the gap between registry process and environmental protection policies. An eco-epidemiological analysis of the database of compounds imported in 2017, use guideline, national agricultural census as well as the public endocrine disruptor databases were carried out. Main class of crop protection compounds were ranked according to imported volumes and the top 10 of each class were contrasted with the disruptor databases. In function to recommended doses and geographical localization of the crops was identified the main hot spots associated to the use of agricultural compounds identified as endocrine disruptors

    Non-Muscle Myosin IIA (Myh9) is in the Nucleus of S-Phase Entering NT2-D1 Cells

    Non-muscle myosin IIA is a cytoplasmic protein that works in concert with F-actin to produce cell movement. The heavy chain of this protein is codified by the MYH9 gene. The presence of motor proteins as myosin or mono and F-actin and their role in transcription has recently been observed. Prep1–the transcription factor of HOXB genes– constitutes a dimer with Pbx1, which induces HOXB gene expression. Prep1 has been found purifying with ?-actin and Myh9. HOXB transcription initiates when cells enter in S-phase, during which DNA duplication and transcription occur at the same time. Here, we have shown that Myh9 co-localizes with Prep1 in the nucleus and in the periphery of the nucleolus in S-phase NT2-D1 cells. Furthermore, we have shown that Myh9 purifies with Pbx1 from nuclear extracts of S-phase entering NT2-D1 cells –and not from cytoplasmic extracts. Taking into account these results, we conclude that Myh9 is in the nucleus of the S-phase entering NT2-D1 cells and might have a role in HOXB transcription

    La presente tesis titulada “PROPUESTA DE MEJORA EN EL TRATAMIENTO DE LOS INTERESES CON APLICACIóN DE LA NIC 23 „COSTOS POR PRÉSTAMOS‟ PARA INCREMENTAR LA UTILIDAD NETA DE CORPORACIóN INFINITY S.A.C, LIMA, 2016.” tiene como objetivo proponer la aplicación de la NIC 23 „Costos por préstamos„ en los intereses generados por las operaciones de préstamos obtenidos para la adquisición y construcción de un activo apto. En esta tesis se ha comparado el uso y no uso de esta norma para contrastar los efectos que tiene su aplicación y cómo la propuesta mejora el resultado económico de la empresa. Para realizar la presente tesis se utilizó el método de investigación aplicada descriptiva y el diseño no experimental. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran que la empresa Corporación Infinity SAC se ve beneficiada con la aplicación de esta NIC, ya que puede capitalizar costos con el fin de incrementar su utilidad neta del ejercicio y de esta manera fortalecer el patrimonio al no incrementar el gasto que afecta a resultados.This thesis entitled "PROPOSAL OF IMPROVEMENT IN THE TREATMENT OF INTERESTS WITH THE APPLICATION OF IAS 23 'COSTS FOR LOANS' TO INCREASE THE NET PROFIT OF THE CORPORATION INFINITA SAC, LIMA, 2016." Its objective is to propose the application of IAS 23 'Costs for loans' in the interest generated by the operations of credits obtained for the acquisition and construction of an eligible asset. In this thesis, has been compared the use and non-use of this standard to compare the effects that its application and how the proposal improves on the economic performance of the company. To perform the present test, was used the descriptive applied research method and the nonexperimental design. The results indicate that the Corporación Infinity SAC was benefited with the application of this NIC, since it can capitalize the costs in order to increase its net income and strengthen the equity by not increasing the expense that affects the results
