Naming Racism: A Conceptual Look at Internalized Racism in US Schools

    Get PDF
Internalized racism describes the conscious and unconscious acceptance of a racial hierarchy where whites are consistently ranked above People of Color. Although scholars across multiple disciplines have discussed this concept, the role of schools in instilling and perpetuating internalized racism within Students of Color has very rarely been examined. This paper is a conceptual piece that utilizes a Critical Race Theory framework to acknowledge the racialized experiences within classroom pedagogy, curriculum, and unequal school resources. We examine how these factors can negatively affect racial group-identity and contribute to internalized racism for Students of Color. Because internalized racism works to sustain educational and social inequity, this paper also explores ways that schools can function to break this cycle

Sequential multi-photon strategy for semiconductor-based terahertz detectors

A semiconductor-based terahertz-detector strategy, exploiting a bound-to-bound-to-continuum architecture, is presented and investigated. In particular, a ladder of equidistant energy levels is employed, whose step is tuned to the desired detection frequency and allows for sequential multi-photon absorption. Our theoretical analysis demonstrates that the proposed multi-subband scheme could represent a promising alternative to conventional quantum-well infrared photodetectors in the terahertz spectral region.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Applied Physic

The purpose of this study is to know and understand the role of school committees in the provision of education in MTs Negeri 1 Palembang and the impact of school committee role in the provision of education in MTs Negeri 1 Palembang. The results of the research are as follows: The role of the school committee as a deliberation is manifested in the form of input of learning process to the teachers, the consideration of the provision and use of facilities and infrastructure, the consideration of the use and utilization of the budget, the input on the draft budget and expenditure of madrasah (RAPBM ), Held draft budget and madrasah budget (RAPBM) budgets, changed considerations and joined the RAPBM with the headmaster. School committees play a role in the framework of transparency in the use of education funding allocations, including in overseeing the use of grants to be more accountable. The committee also oversees the implementation of the bimbel (additional class hours). The role of the committee as a mediator has so far been the form of a link between the principal and the community, the principal with the education council and the principal with the school itself. The impact of school committee role in education implementation at MTs Negeri 1 Palembang is seen in the implementation of four role of committee which influence either directly or indirectly, but not yet maximal in support of education in MTs Negeri Palembang

Short term effects of irradiance on the growth of Pterocladiella capillacea (Gelidiales, Rhodophyta)

Pterocladiella capillacea has been economically exploited for agar extraction in the Azores for many years. Harvesting dropped to a full stop in the early 1990s due to a population collapse, but restarted in 2013. Since then it has been intensively harvested and overexploitation must be prevented, with both sustainable harvesting and effective cultivation practices. This study represents the first attempt to determine optimal conditions for P. capillacea production in the Azores, and evaluates its vegetative growth in two experiments using von Stosch’s medium designed to test entire thallus and tips portions response to different irradiances (30, 70 and 150 μmol photons m¯² s¯¹). The best relative growth rate (RGR) was recorded at 150 μmol photons m¯² s¯¹ for the entire thalli and tips after two-weeks and three-weeks, respectively, indicating that an acclimation period is necessary to assure the growth of this alga under experimental conditions. Higher RGR was obtained at higher irradiance (3.98 ± 2.10% fm day¯¹), but overall, growth rates were low or negative. Epiphytes were a serious problem towards the end of the entire thallus experiments, where Feldmannia irregularis proliferate at all irradiances. Future cultivation approaches complemented with other relevant environmental factors (e.g. pH, photoperiod, salinity), are recommended.FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia projects UID/BIA/00329/2013, 2015 - 2018 and UID/BIA/00329/2019, CIRN (Centro de Investigação de Recursos Naturais, University of the Azores), and CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research, Porto, Portugal).
