Roots/Routes as Arterial Connections for Art Educators: Advocating for Aboriginal Cultures
Arterial and life connections for art educators. Arteries are muscular vessels carrying blood away from the heart to every part of the body, eventually bringing the blood back to the heart before venturing out again. Metaphorically, these pathways locate the heart as a home from which travel extends, repeatedly, expectantly as life itself. Symbolically, arterial connections pulsate with the notion of art, expressing art through life through art. To many people, and particularly Aboriginal peoples, art translated as cultural performance is found in the very pathways and bloodlines of their geographies and histories. However, these arterial connections are available to all of us, especially art educators, as we come to recognize our own pathways and bloodlines. Sharing stories of lives, cultural roots and routed experiences, illustrates complex identity building in the late twentieth century. In this article I talk about a trip to a Paiwan aboriginal community in southern Taiwan and what I learned from/with these people. I hope this portrayal encourages others to reflect on their travel experiences in ways that may help to make classroom art experiences socioculturally diverse and politically engaged
Naming Racism: A Conceptual Look at Internalized Racism in US Schools
Internalized racism describes the conscious and unconscious acceptance of a racial hierarchy where whites are consistently ranked above People of Color. Although scholars across multiple disciplines have discussed this concept, the role of schools in instilling and perpetuating internalized racism within Students of Color has very rarely been examined. This paper is a conceptual piece that utilizes a Critical Race Theory framework to acknowledge the racialized experiences within classroom pedagogy, curriculum, and unequal school resources. We examine how these factors can negatively affect racial group-identity and contribute to internalized racism for Students of Color. Because internalized racism works to sustain educational and social inequity, this paper also explores ways that schools can function to break this cycle

Evaluasi Kinerja Operasional Angkutan Petikemas Di Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak Surabaya Dalam Upaya Efisiensi Logistik
Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak Surabaya merupakan pelabuhan terbesar di Jawa Timur, difungsikan sebagai dermaga serbaguna yang melayani kapal barang, penumpang dan petikemas, fungsi lainnya adalah sebagai tempat penyimpanan barang, pemrosesan barang baik impor maupun ekspor. Untuk pelayanan kepanduan pelabuhan ini beroperasi 24 jam non stop, dalam melayani pengangkutan petikemas domestik dan internasional (antar pulau) akhir-akhir ini terus meningkat dari tahun ke tahun, untuk tahun 2010 realisasi arus petikemas mencapai 2.407.487 TEUs, jumlah ini meningkat pada tahun 2011 menjadi 2.643.518 TEUs, dan pada tahun 2012 meningkat menjadi 2.849.138 TEUs. Penelitian ini mengamati kinerja operasional angkutan petikemas di Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak yang bertujuan untuk mengetahui penilaian pelanggan. Metode analisis Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) digunakan untuk menganalisis tingkat kepuasan responden. Hasil Penelitian menunjukkan nilai CSI 58,194 % dan ini berarti bahwa secara umum kinerja operasional angkutan petikemas yang dirasakan oleh responden adalah masih kurang memuaskan (very poor). Aspek yang perlu ditingkatkan adalah penambahan truk pengangkut petikemas, pelayanan petikemas ke truk untuk dimasukkan ke kapal, pelayanan dari truk ke lapangan penumpukan dan sebaliknya, serta pelayanan petikemas di lapangan penumpukan. Sedangkan aspek yang perlu dipertahankan adalah prosedur pengurusan dokumen barang sudah baik dan perlu dipertahankan.Kata kunci: pelabuhan, kinerja operasional, angkutan petikema
A kpc-scale X-ray jet in the BL Lac source S5 2007+777
X-ray jets in AGN are commonly observed in FRII and FRI radio-galaxies, but
rarely in BL Lacs, most probably due to their orientation close to the line of
sight and the ensuing foreshortening effects. Only three BL Lacs are known so
far to contain a kpc-scale X-ray jet. In this paper, we present the evidence
for the existence of a fourth extended X-ray jet in the classical
radio-selected source S5 2007+777, which for its hybrid FRI/II radio morphology
has been classified as a HYMOR (HYbrid MOrphology Radio source). Our Chandra
ACIS-S observations of this source revealed an X-ray counterpart to the
19"-long radio jet. Interestingly, the X-ray properties of the kpc-scale jet in
S5 2007+777 are very similar to those observed in FRII jets. First, the X-ray
morphology closely mirrors the radio one, with the X-rays being concentrated in
the discrete radio knots. Second, the X-ray continuum of the jet/brightest knot
is described by a very hard power law, with photon index Gamma_x~1, although
the uncertainties are large. Third, the optical upper limit from archival HST
data implies a concave radio-to-X-ray SED. If the X-ray emission is attributed
to IC/CMB with equipartition, strong beaming (delta=13) is required, implying a
very large scale (Mpc) jet. The beaming requirement can be somewhat relaxed
assuming a magnetic field lower than equipartition. Alternatively, synchrotron
emission from a second population of very high-energy electrons is viable.
Comparison to other HYMOR jets detected with Chandra is discussed, as well as
general implications for the origin of the FRI/II division.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 19 pages, 3 figure
Congenital pancreatoblastoma: a case report
The literature describes 15 cases of congenital pancreatoblastoma (PB): 5 had prenatal diagnosis, none
had metastases at diagnosis, 7 were associated with BeckwitheWiedemann syndrome (BWS). In 13 cases
resection was radical, while in 2 there were macroscopic residues. Only one patient underwent
chemotherapy after distant recurrence. All children are alive except one who died because of problems
related to BWS. Our goal is to describe the approach adopted in an infant with congenital PB treated in
our center. After a prenatal third semester diagnosis of abdominal anechoic lesion, the radiological investigations
(ultrasound, MRI) performed at birth described a cystic lesion of unclear nature. We proceeded
to laparoscopic exploration, transformed into open approach after the detection of a lesion
located in the body of the pancreas; this lesion was resected, preserving the head and tail of pancreas.
The histological diagnosis showed a completely excised PB. After excluding metastatic lesions, we
decided to perform only careful follow-up without chemotherapy. The follow-up at 12 months is
negative. Although PB is a malignant tumor that requires a multidisciplinary treatment, the congenital
cases seem to have a less aggressive biological behavior. The treatment, therefore, in case of complete
resection, could be only surgical, followed by a careful follow-up. These forms are often associated with
congenital BWS, but in our case the patient did not have the typical characteristics of the syndrome
The enemy within:designing a cell-based gameplay system for cancer education
This paper outlines the design and preliminary evaluation of The Enemy Within, a browser-based game produced to raise awareness of the nature of cancer as a progressive disease. Aimed at high school and young adult audiences, the ambition with the game is to make visible to players the myriad ways in which healthy cells can mutate and ultimately inherit hallmarks of cancer, whilst also demonstrating how both real-world behaviours and underlying genetics impact both positively and negatively on cell health
