A New Symmetric Expression of Weyl Ordering
For the creation operator \adag and the annihilation operator of a
harmonic oscillator, we consider Weyl ordering expression of (\adag a)^n and
obtain a new symmetric expression of Weyl ordering w.r.t. \adag a \equiv N
and a\adag =N+1 where is the number operator. Moreover, we interpret
intertwining formulas of various orderings in view of the difference theory.
Then we find that the noncommutative parameter corresponds to the increment of
the difference operator w.r.t. variable . Therefore, quantum
(noncommutative) calculations of harmonic oscillators are done by classical
(commutative) ones of the number operator by using the difference theory. As a
by-product, nontrivial relations including the Stirling number of the first

ALE3D Rolling Simulations
Hot rolling is a problem involving large deformations during the process of turning an ingot into a thin sheet. As a result of the large deformations inherent in the process, significant amounts of energy are put into the ingot mechanically, most of which results in heat generation. Therefore, in order to predict the results of rolling both the mechanical and the thermal factors must accurately represent the real conditions. The factors which must be properly tuned include interface friction, mass scaling to decrease computation times, heat transfer at the interface, convective heat transfer from the ingot, and convective heat transfer from the roll. Since these parameters are generally not measurable the correct values must be derived by tuning the parameters so that solutions match some other measurable result. The interface friction will be tuned using an ALE3D input deck which has been set up to output the torque applied to the roll during the pass. The friction coefficient will be adjusted so that the computed torque matches the measured value. The various heat transfer coefficients are dependent on each other, and are tuned based on measured roll surface temperatures, ingot exit temperatures, and the energy input through the mechanical deformation of the ingot. The heat transfer coefficient at the interface has been found to be approximately 1.25 x 10{sup 5} W/m{sup 2}K, based on estimates of how much heat can be taken from the roll surface by coolant and matching a roll surface temperature. The convection coefficient on the ingot surface has been assumed to be 100 W/m{sup 2}K, on the high end for convection to air. However, this convection coefficient is low enough that the ingot should cool uniformly through its thickness as it would with a lower convection coefficient. Also necessary in accurate modeling is a good description of material behavior. In order to aid the development of an accurate material model an ALE3D input deck which simulates compression tests with temperature gradients has been developed. The model output engineering stress-strain curves which can be compared to the experimentally collected data. Also, comparisons of the deformed shapes can be made. The model has been tuned using MTS parameters for AA 5182 and will be ready for use when parameters for AA 2024 are experimentally developed. Currently, more work is needed to properly tune all the model parameters. A parameterized three dimensional geometry and mesh has been created so that once the parameters are tuned the transition to three dimensional simulations should be quick
Cytotoxicity of ascorbate, lipoic acid, and other antioxidants in hollow fibre in vitro tumours
Vitamin C (ascorbate) is toxic to tumour cells, and has been suggested as an adjuvant cancer treatment. Our goal was to determine if ascorbate, in combination with other antioxidants, could kill cells in the SW620 hollow fibre in vitro solid tumour model at clinically achievable concentrations. Ascorbate anti-cancer efficacy, alone or in combination with lipoic acid, vitamin K 3, phenyl ascorbate, or doxorubicin, was assessed using annexin V staining and standard survival assays. 2-day treatments with 10âmM ascorbate increased the percentage of apoptotic cells in SW620 hollow fibre tumours. Lipoic acid synergistically enhanced ascorbate cytotoxicity, reducing the 2-day LC 50 in hollow fibre tumours from 34âmM to 4âmM. Lipoic acid, unlike ascorbate, was equally effective against proliferating and non-proliferating cells. Ascorbate levels in human blood plasma were measured during and after intravenous ascorbate infusions. Infusions of 60âg produced peak plasma concentrations exceeding 20âmM with an area under the curve (24âh) of 76âmM h. Thus, tumoricidal concentrations may be achievable in vivo. Ascorbate efficacy was enhanced in an additive fashion by phenyl ascorbate or vitamin K 3. The effect of ascorbate on doxorubicin efficacy was concentration dependent; low doses were protective while high doses increased cell killing. © 2001 Cancer Research Campaign http://www.bjcancer.co

Do wholes become more than the sum of their parts in the rodent (Rattus Norvegicus) visual system? A test case with the configural superiority effect
The rodent has been used to model various aspects of the human visual system, but it is unclear to what extent human visual perception can be modelled in the rodent. Research suggests rodents can perform invariant object recognition tasks in a manner comparable to humans. There is further evidence that rodents also make use of certain grouping cues, but when performing a shape discrimination they have a tendency to rely much more on local image cues than human participants. In the current work, we exploit the fact that humans sometimes discriminate better between whole shapes, rather than the parts from which they are constructed, to ask whether rodents show a classic Configural Superiority Effect. Using touchscreen-equipped operant boxes, rats were trained to discriminate âpartâ or âwholeâ images based off of those used by J. R. Pomerantz et al. (1977) J Exp Psychol Hum Percept Perform, 3, 422â435. Here, we show that rats show no advantage for wholes and that they perform better when presented with simpler image parts, a pattern of effect opposite to what was seen in humans when highly comparable stimuli were used. These results add to our understanding of the similarities and differences between the human and rodent visual system, and suggest that the rodent visual system may not compute part whole relationships in a way comparable to humans. These results are significant from both a comparative anatomy perspective, and of particular relevance for those wishing to use rodents to model visuo-perceptual deficits associated with human psychiatric disorders
Density matrix reconstruction from displaced photon number distributions
We consider state reconstruction from the measurement statistics of phase
space observables generated by photon number states. The results are obtained
by inverting certain infinite matrices. In particular, we obtain reconstruction

Evaluation of the English version of the Fear of COVID-19 Scale and its relationship with behavior change and political beliefs
The COVID-19 pandemic has many individuals around the world fearing for their lives. The constant news coverage, rapid transmission, and relatively high mortality rate, make fearfulness a natural response. To assess the fear of COVID-19, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S) was developed. The primary aim of the present study was to conduct the first psychometric assessment and validation of the English version of the FCV-19S. Two samples were collected in New Zealand. Sample 1 comprised 1624 participants of which 1397 completed all questions and were used in the analyses. Sample 2 comprised 1111 participants of which 1023 completed all questions and were used in the analyses. Several psychometric tests were conducted to ascertain the scaleâs reliability and validity. Across both samples, the FCV-19S had high internal consistency. Consistent with the earlier validation studies, the FCV-19S displayed a moderately strong relationship with the perceived infectability and germ aversion subscales of the perceived vulnerability to disease scale (PVDS). Furthermore, FCV-19S scores were negatively correlated with the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) scores. With respect to the motivating role of fear, there was a significant relationship between FCV-19S scores and adherence to the lockdown rules that were implemented in New Zealand. Finally, consistent with recent reports on the politicization of the COVID-19 pandemic, an exploratory question found that participants who rated themselves as more conservative tended to report lower FCV-19S scores. The English version of the COVID-19S is a sound unidimensional scale with robust psychometric properties and can be used with confidence among English-speaking populations
From one-dimensional fields to Vlasov equilibria: theory and application of Hermite polynomials
We consider the theory and application of a solution method for the inverse problem in collisionless equilibria, namely that of calculating a VlasovâMaxwell equilibrium for a given macroscopic (fluid) equilibrium. Using Jeansâ theorem, the equilibrium distribution functions are expressed as functions of the constants of motion, in the form of a Maxwellian multiplied by an unknown function of the canonical momenta. In this case it is possible to reduce the inverse problem to inverting Weierstrass transforms, which we achieve by using expansions over Hermite polynomials. A sufficient condition on the pressure tensor is found which guarantees the convergence and the boundedness of the candidate solution, when satisfied. This condition is obtained by elementary means, and it is clear how to put it into practice. We also argue that for a given pressure tensor for which our method applies, there always exists a positive distribution function solution for a sufficiently magnetised plasma. Illustrative examples of the use of this method with both force-free and non-force-free macroscopic equilibria are presented, including the full verification of a recently derived distribution function for the force-free Harris sheet (Allanson et al., Phys. Plasmas, vol. 22 (10), 2015, 102116). In the effort to model equilibria with lower values of the plasma beta, solutions for the same macroscopic equilibrium in a new gauge are calculated, with numerical results presented for beta=0.05
Breakdown of Lindstedt Expansion for Chaotic Maps
In a previous paper of one of us [Europhys. Lett. 59 (2002), 330--336] the
validity of Greene's method for determining the critical constant of the
standard map (SM) was questioned on the basis of some numerical findings. Here
we come back to that analysis and we provide an interpretation of the numerical
results by showing that no contradiction is found with respect to Greene's
method. We show that the previous results based on the expansion in Lindstedt
series do correspond to the transition value but for a different map: the
semi-standard map (SSM). Moreover, we study the expansion obtained from the SM
and SSM by suppressing the small divisors. The first case turns out to be
related to Kepler's equation after a proper transformation of variables. In
both cases we give an analytical solution for the radius of convergence, that
represents the singularity in the complex plane closest to the origin. Also
here, the radius of convergence of the SM's analogue turns out to be lower than
the one of the SSM. However, despite the absence of small denominators these
two radii are lower than the ones of the true maps for golden mean winding
numbers. Finally, the analyticity domain and, in particular, the critical
constant for the two maps without small divisors are studied analytically and
numerically. The analyticity domain appears to be an perfect circle for the SSM
analogue, while it is stretched along the real axis for the SM analogue
yielding a critical constant that is larger than its radius of convergence.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
