Ka-band (32 GHz) spacecraft development plan
A road map for the development of a protoflight 32 GHz spacecraft solid state transmitter is given. The major milestones include the development of device and component technology required for use in the spaceborne experimental and operational transmitter systems. Two experimental spacecraft transmitter systems are envisioned: first, a low power beacon, to determine the performance of a 32 GHz downlink communications system; and second, an array feed, to further verify the results of the first experiment and service as a test bed for technology required for an operational system. The first experiment was proposed to NASA Headquarters for flight aboard the Mars Observer spacecraft with spacecraft integration in early 1989. The second is to be available for integration aboard a spacecraft such as the Comet Rendezvous Asteroid Flyby (CRAF) mission in the 1990 time frame. These experimental systems are to lead to the development of a protoflight transmitter for subsequent spacecraft integration in 1992, the time frame of the Cassini mission to Saturn
Long-term evolution of highly alkaline steel slag drainage waters

The disposal of slag generated by the steel industry can have negative consequences upon the surrounding aquatic environment by the generation of high pH waters, leaching of potentially problematic trace metals, and rapid rates of calcite precipitation which smother benthic habitats. A 36-year dataset was collated from the long-term ambient monitoring of physicochemical parameters and elemental concentrations of samples from two steel slag leachate-affected watercourses in northern England. Waters were typified by elevated pH ( > 10), high alkalinity, and were rich in dissolved metals (e.g. calcium (Ca), aluminium (Al), and zinc (Zn)). Long-term trend analysis was performed upon pH, alkalinity, and Ca concentration which, in addition to Ca flux calculations, were used to highlight the longevity of pollution arising as a result of the dumping and subsequent leaching of steel slags. Declines in calcium and alkalinity have been modest over the monitoring period and not accompanied by significant declines in water pH. If the monotonic trends of decline in alkalinity and calcium continue in the largest of the receiving streams, it will be in the region of 50–80 years before calcite precipitation would be expected to be close to baseline levels, where ecological impacts would be negligible
Development and growth of hatchery-reared larval Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus)
Although the Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) is
a prime candidate for aquaculture, the problematic production of juveniles remains a major impediment to
commercial culture of this species. In order to improve the understanding of larval development and to refine hatchery production techniques, this study was conducted to characterize development and growth of Florida pompano from hatching through metamorphosis by using digital photography
and image analysis. Newly hatched larvae were transparent and had a large, elongate yolk sac and single oil globule. The lower and upper jaws as well as the digestive tract
were not fully developed at hatching. Rotifers were observed in the stomach of larvae at three days after hatching (DAH), and Artemia spp. were observed in the stomach of larvae at 14 DAH. Growth rates calculated
from total length measurements were 0.22 ±0.04, 0.23 ±0.12, and 0.35 ±0.09 mm/d for each of the larval rearing trials. The mouth gape of larvae was 0.266 ±0.075 mm at first feeding and increased with a growth rate of 0.13 ± 0.04 mm/d. Predicted values for optimal prey sizes ranged from 80

A pitfall of piecewise-polytropic equation of state inference
The only messenger radiation in the Universe which one can use to
statistically probe the Equation of State (EOS) of cold dense matter is that
originating from the near-field vicinities of compact stars. Constraining
gravitational masses and equatorial radii of rotating compact stars is a major
goal for current and future telescope missions, with a primary purpose of
constraining the EOS. From a Bayesian perspective it is necessary to carefully
discuss prior definition; in this context a complicating issue is that in
practice there exist pathologies in the general relativistic mapping between
spaces of local (interior source matter) and global (exterior spacetime)
parameters. In a companion paper, these issues were raised on a theoretical
basis. In this study we reproduce a probability transformation procedure from
the literature in order to map a joint posterior distribution of Schwarzschild
gravitational masses and radii into a joint posterior distribution of EOS
parameters. We demonstrate computationally that EOS parameter inferences are
sensitive to the choice to define a prior on a joint space of these masses and
radii, instead of on a joint space interior source matter parameters. We focus
on the piecewise-polytropic EOS model, which is currently standard in the field
of astrophysical dense matter study. We discuss the implications of this issue

Districts Taking Charge of the Principal Pipeline
Six urban school districts received support from The Wallace Foundation to address the critical challenge of supplying schools with effective principals. The experiences of these districts may point the way to steps other districts might take toward this same goal. Since 2011, the districts have participated in the Principal Pipeline Initiative, which set forth a comprehensive strategy for strengthening school leadership in four interrelated domains of district policy and practice:Leader standards to which sites align job descriptions, preparation, selection, evaluation, and support.Preservice preparation that includes selective admissions to high-quality programs.Selective hiring, and placement based on a match between the candidate and the school.On-the-job evaluation and support addressing the capacity to improve teaching and learning, with support focused on needs identified by evaluation.The initiative also brought the expectation that district policies and practices related to school leaders would build the district's capacity to advance its educational priorities. The evaluation of the Principal Pipeline Initiative has a dual purpose: to analyze the processes of implementing the required components in the participating districts from 2011 through 2015; and then to assess the results achieved in schools led by principals whose experiences in standards-based preparation, hiring, evaluation, and support have been consistent with the initiative's requirements.
