    High voltage solid-state relay

    Get PDF
Hybrid microelectronics relay has characteristics significantly superior to conventional solid state relays. Relay provides 2500 Vdc input to output isolation and operates from high threshold logic signal to switch load of 400 Vdc at 2 mA. Technology should be of interest to manufacturers of discrete components

Structural optimization by generalized, multilevel decomposition

    Get PDF
The developments toward a general multilevel optimization capability and results for a three-level structural optimization are described. The method partitions a structure into a number of substructuring levels where each substructure corresponds to a subsystem in the general case of an engineering system. The method is illustrated by a portal framework that decomposes into individual beams. Each beam is a box that can be further decomposed into stiffened plates. Substructuring for this example spans three different levels: (1) the bottom level of finite elements representing the plates; (2) an intermediate level of beams treated as substructures; and (3) the top level for the assembled structure. The three-level case is now considered to be qualitatively complete

The occurrence of cadmium in seawater and in marine organisms and sediments

    Get PDF
Methods have been developed for determining cadmium in seawater, marine organisms, and marine sediments. The procedure, based on the dithizone extraction method of Saltzman, is capable of detecting less than 10 m”g of the element and can be used for determining cadmium in silicate rocks; only thallium interferes. To confirm the presence of cadmium and to ensure freedom from contamination, the dithizone extracts were examined spectrographically

Antimicrobial Susceptibilities of Aerobic Isolates from Respiratory Samples of Young New Zealand Horses

3rd Annual IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition, ECCE 2011, Phoenix, AZ, 17-22 September 2011This paper presents a method of mitigating the transient overshoots of DC-DC converters operating with large load disturbances. The method involves a small auxiliary power circuit with a complementary control scheme that provides a smooth absorption and release of excess energy from and to the main DC-DC converter in the events of large load changes. This control mechanism interactively mitigates the large transient overshoots which would otherwise appear at the converter output. Since the control scheme involves an adjustable-energy-storage feature, the proposed solution is effective for any level of step-load change within a pre-specified range.Department of Electronic and Information EngineeringRefereed conference pape

Second Epoch Global VLBI Observations of Compact Radio Sources in the M82 Starburst Galaxy

We have presented the results of a second epoch of global Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations, taken on 23 February 2001 at a wavelength of 18 cm, of the central kiloparsec of the nearby starburst galaxy Messier 82. These observations were aimed at studying the structural and flux evolution of some of the compact radio sources in the central region that have been identified as supernova remnants. The objects 41.95+575 and 43.31+592 have been studied, expansion velocities of 2500 +/- 1200 km/s and 7350 +/- 2100 km/s respectively have been derived. Flux densities of 31.1 +/- 0.3 mJy and 17.4 +/- 0.3 mJy have been measured for the two objects. These results are consistent with measurements and predictions from previous epochs.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Evaluation of Gaucho Seed Treatment and Soil Insecticides for Management of the Red Imported Fire Ant on Seedling Grain Sorghum During 1994-1996 (Research Report #101)

    Get PDF
Seed treatments have been used in Louisiana and Texas to prevent red imported fire ant damage in grain sorghum. Seed-protecting insecticides often repel or kill red imported fire ants. This publication includes information on current research in Louisiana that is focused on developing insecticide use strategies to manage the red imported fire ant in grain sorghum.https://digitalcommons.lsu.edu/agcenter_researchreports/1020/thumbnail.jp

The multiple junction edge illuminated solar cell

    Get PDF
The multiple junction edge illuminated solar cell was devised for high voltage low current applications. Devices to be flight tested in early 1974 with 96 series connected PNN+ junctions in a 2 cm X 2.3 cm size deliver 36 volts at 1 milliampere. Test data of M-J cells fabricated with resistivities of 10, 50, 100, 200, 450, and 1000 ohm cm silicon are presented and problem areas are discussed. An additional potential application of the M-J cell lies in ultilization of its high intensity performance that has been demonstrated at levels in excess of 100 AMO suns

Hydrologic Model Studies of the Mt. Olympus Cove Area of Salt Lake County

Urban development on any natural drainage basin causes marked changes in the runoff characteristics of the basin. Urbanization alters natural drainage channels and reduces average infiltration rates. Thus, flood conditions are enhanced both within the urbanizing area itself and at downstream locations, where existing channels might not be able to cope with the increased rates of water flow. The Olympus Cove area in Salt Lake County is undergoing rapid urban development, and potential flood hazards within the area and at downstream locations are thereby increasing. Recognizing this situation, officials of the Sale Lake County took the initiative in organizing an ‘ad hoc’ interagency technical team to study and evaluate the problem. The particular responsibilities which were undertaken by the representatives of the Utah Water Research Laboratory on this study team were to synthesize all existing information, and what which might be developed during the study period, and on this basis to formulate computer models to represent the hydrology of the area. The report describes the model development process and discusses the application of the models to the three source areas being considered, namely: (1) the Neff’s Canyon drainage; (2) the northern slopes of Mt. Olympus; and (3) the urbanizing area of Olympus Cove. Runoff from the short-term, high-intensity, convective storms is emphasized. Hydrologic response was found to be particularl
