    Quasars from the 7C Survey - I:sample selection and radio maps

    We describe the selection of candidate radio-loud quasars obtained by cross-matching radio source positions from the low-frequency (151 MHz) 7C survey with optical positions from five pairs of EO POSS-I plates scanned with the Cambridge Automatic Plate-measuring Machine (APM). The sky region studied is centred at RA 10 h 28 m, Dec +41 and covers 0.057 sr. We present VLA observations of the quasar candidates, and tabulate various properties derived from the radio maps. We discuss the selection criteria of the resulting `7CQ' sample of radio-loud quasars. The 70 confirmed quasars, and some fraction of the 36 unconfirmed candidates, constitute a filtered sample with the following selection criteria: 151-MHz flux density S151 > 100 mJy; POSS-I E-plate magnitude E approx R < 20; and POSS-I colour (O - E) < 1.8; the effective area of the survey drops significantly below S151 approx 200 mJy. We argue that the colour criterion excludes few if any quasars, but note, on the basis of recent work by Willott et al. (1998b), that the E magnitude limit probably excludes more than 50 per cent of the radio-loud quasars.Comment: Latex, 30 pages. Accepted by MNRA

    Fostering personal resilience in the Royal Air Force: a study of Force Development and Adventurous Personal Development Training

    A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Wolverhampton for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.Resilient airmen and women are pivotal strategic game-changers in the RAF's next generation contribution to the United Kingdom's Defence Strategy. Resilience is the ability to learn and bounce forward from adversity, thus developing an increased personal resilience baseline to cope with future challenges. Whilst providing these strategic capabilities, RAF personnel must remain physically, spiritually, socially and psychologically resilient. In addressing this force resilience tetrad, contextualised Force Development and Adventurous Personal Development Training (FD/APDT) interventions contribute towards RAF participant’s resilience development. This thesis provides participant responses of RAF FD/APDT participant’s (n=237) perceived resilience, before and immediately after, a five-day RAF FD/APDT intervention with focus groups (n=33) conducted six months later. The initial data from the sequential explanatory mixed-methods research (Connor Davidson Resilience Scale (CDRS)-25 questionnaire and focus groups) confirmed perceived resilience development for psychological, physical, social and spiritual resilience factors identified within the CDRS-25. Evidence from follow-up focus groups suggests that resilience is further enhanced over time, with greater perceived resilience growth positively affecting resilience across the four domains reported after six months. Findings from this research further outlines the requirement for a through-career resilience educational pathway for RAF personnel to reinforce longitudinal resilience behaviours and attitudes. The enhanced personal and organisational resilience combined with the improvements in primary role efficiency developed through FD/APDT, is proposed as a key enabler for the RAF’s Whole Force socio-cultural resilience enhancement, to empower RAF personnel to meet the demands of ‘next generation’ RAF resilience requirements.Royal Air Forc

Both a humor and literary magazine, The Pine Needle was a University of Maine student-produced periodical that began publication in the fall of 1946, the first post-World War II semester that saw GIs returning to campus. The Needle reflected an edginess and rebellion not found in previous UMaine student publications. While past student publications relied on euphemisms for alcohol and dating on campus, The Needle openly promoted the sexualization of co-eds and the use of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol by students who experienced war. Cover art for this issue is a pen-and-ink illustration by Len Keenan depicting a first year student wearing a freshman cap and bow tie, smoking a pipe that appears to be making him ill. Leonard F. Keenan (1929-1984), graduated from the University of Maine in 1951 with a B.S. in Forestry. He later earned his MBA from the Army Comptrollership School at Syracuse University and served as a civilian in the Army Budget Office. Though his career with the Army hit a snag in 1976, when he was among four men receiving formal, written reprimands for ...failing to detect and present accounting [failures] that lead to massive overspending... at the end of the Vietnam War, Keenan was honored following his death by the establishment of the Leonard F. Keenan Memorial Award at Syracuse University. The award continues to be presented annually to the U.S. Department of Defense\u27s outstanding financial manager. Keenan died in Virginia on April 30, 1984 from congestive heart failure

    ACMiner: Extraction and Analysis of Authorization Checks in Android's Middleware

    Billions of users rely on the security of the Android platform to protect phones, tablets, and many different types of consumer electronics. While Android's permission model is well studied, the enforcement of the protection policy has received relatively little attention. Much of this enforcement is spread across system services, taking the form of hard-coded checks within their implementations. In this paper, we propose Authorization Check Miner (ACMiner), a framework for evaluating the correctness of Android's access control enforcement through consistency analysis of authorization checks. ACMiner combines program and text analysis techniques to generate a rich set of authorization checks, mines the corresponding protection policy for each service entry point, and uses association rule mining at a service granularity to identify inconsistencies that may correspond to vulnerabilities. We used ACMiner to study the AOSP version of Android 7.1.1 to identify 28 vulnerabilities relating to missing authorization checks. In doing so, we demonstrate ACMiner's ability to help domain experts process thousands of authorization checks scattered across millions of lines of code

    A population of high-redshift type-2 quasars-II. Radio Properties

    We present multi-frequency radio observations of a sample of z~2 obscured (type-2) quasars in the Spitzer extragalactic First Look Survey area. We combine the public data at 1.4 GHz, used in the selection of these sources, with new observations at 610 MHz (GMRT) and at 4.9 GHz (VLA). We find the sample includes sources with steep, flat and gigahertz-peaked spectra. There are no strong correlations between the presence or absence of emission lines in the optical spectra and the radio spectral properties of the sample. However, there are no secure flat-spectrum type-2 quasars with narrow emission lines which would be problematic for unified schemes. Most of the population have straight radio spectra with spectral index alpha~1 as is expected for developed, potentially FRI-like, jets in which continous injection of relativistic electrons is accompanied by inverse-Compton losses against the cosmic microwave background.Comment: 6 pages, 2 colour figures, submitted to MNRA

    Burner Condition Monitoring based on Flame Imaging and Data Fusion Techniques

    Rapid growth in electricity generation from intermittent renewables has resulted in increasing demand in conventional fossil-fuel power stations for plant flexibility, load balancing and fuel flexibility. This has led to new challenges in plant monitoring and control, particularly securing combustion stability for optimizing combustion process in terms of furnace safety, fuel efficiency and pollutant emissions. An unstable combustion process can cause many problems including furnace vibration, non-uniform thermal distribution in the furnace, high pollutant emissions and unburnt carbon in the flue gas. The stability of burners should therefore be continuously monitored and maintained for the improved overall performance of the furnace. A study is carried out to investigate the burner stability based on flame imaging and data fusion techniques. Experiments were carried out on a 915 MWth coal-fired power station. A bespoke flame imaging system (Fig. 1) was employed to acquire flame images from 16 individual burners (4 mills each with 4 burners) with a frame rate up to 200 frames per second. The characteristic parameters of the flame, including temperature, non-uniformity, entropy, oscillation frequency and colour characteristics (hue, saturation and intensity), are computed. The relationship between the flame characteristics and burner inputs and flue gas emissions (e.g., NOx) is quantified. Stability index is then introduced as an indicator of the stability of individual burner. Fig. 2 illustrates typical flame images for different burners.     Rotation Grazing Demonstrations With Beef Cows on HEL - Adams County Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Project

    Two grazing systems were demonstrated on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) land in southwestern Iowa near Corning in the summers of 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995. This report summarizes the 1995 data and compares them to results from the four previous years. The systems, a 13-paddock intensive-rotational grazing system and a 4-paddock more traditional rotation, both established in 1991, are aimed at showing economically sustainable grass alternatives for steeply sloping (9-14% slope), highly erodible land (HEL) once the 10-year CRP ends. In a 147-day grazing season in 1995, nursing crossbred calves with no creep gained 2.36 pounds and 2.38 pounds per day on the 13- and 4-paddock systems, respectively. The rotations were stocked at 1.65 acres per cow-calf pair on the 13-paddock system and 1.72 acres per pair on the 4-paddock system. This produced 210.2 pounds of calf gain per acre on the 13-paddock system and 203.2 pounds of calf gain per acre on the 4- paddock system.. Similar calves gained 2.37 pounds and 2.50 pounds per day for 155 days, yielding a total gain per acre of 222.7 pounds on the 13-paddock system and 224.9 pounds on the 4-paddock system in 1994. Results for 1992 remain the highest from both systems in the five years of grazing, with calf gain per head per day at 2.45 for 155 days netting 241.9 pounds per acre on the 13- paddock system and calf gain per head per day at 2.38 for 154 days on the 4-paddock system yielding 263.6 pounds per acre. Cows maintained both their weight and condition scores in both systems again in 1995. A third system, the 18-paddock intensive-rotational grazing system, was stocked with stocker steers in 1995, and the results are reported in a second article in the 1996 ISU Beef Research Report entitled “Intensive- Rotational Grazing Steers on Highly Erodible Land at the Adams County CRP Project.” Concerning grazing management, paddocks were grazed four, five, or six times in the 13-paddock intensive- rotational grazing system during the 147-day grazing season of 1995. This number of times grazed per paddock was nearly equal to times grazed per paddock in 1994. However, several paddocks were subdivided temporarily to equalize paddock size and increase grazing uniformity. This increased the total number of cattle moves in the 13-paddock system from 78 in 1994 to 109 in 1995. The average length of stay on each paddock or subdivision of a paddock per grazing time was 1 to 2.2 days. This was less than in any of the other four grazing years in this project. The principle of not grazing more than half the standing forage during any one grazing period was closely followed in 1995. All paddocks in the 13-paddock system were also rested approximately the recommended 30 days between each grazing cycle in 1995

    Stimulus-evoked high frequency oscillations are present in neuronal networks on microelectrode arrays

    Pathological high frequency oscillations (250–600 Hz) are present in the brains of epileptic animals and humans. The etiology of these oscillations and how they contribute to the diseased state remains unclear. This work identifies the presence of microstimulation-evoked high frequency oscillations (250–400 Hz) in dissociated neuronal networks cultured on microelectrode arrays (MEAs). Oscillations are more apparent with higher stimulus voltages. As with in vivo studies, activity is isolated to a single electrode, however, the MEA provides improved spatial resolution with no spread of the oscillation to adjacent electrodes 200 μm away. Oscillations develop across four weeks in vitro. Oscillations still occur in the presence of tetrodotoxin and synaptic blockers, and they cause no apparent disruption in the ability of oscillation-presenting electrodes to elicit directly evoked action potentials (dAPs) or promote the spread of synaptic activity throughout the culture. Chelating calcium with ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid (EGTA) causes a temporal prolongation of the oscillation. Finally, carbenoxolone significantly reduces or eliminates the high frequency oscillations. Gap junctions may play a significant role in maintaining the oscillation given the inhibitory effect of carbenoxolone, the propagating effect of reduced calcium conditions and the isolated nature of the activity as demonstrated in previous studies. This is the first demonstration of stimulus-evoked high frequency oscillations in dissociated cultures. Unlike current models that rely on complex in vivo recording conditions, this work presents a simple controllable model in neuronal cultures on MEAs to further investigate how the oscillations occur at the molecular level and how they may contribute to the pathophysiology of disease
