    Effects of culivation conditions for apples on growth rates of fruit fly larvae and contents of phenolics

    The different cultivation treatments significantly and systematically affected both rate of development of fruit fly larvae and contents of phenolic compounds, but not the total number of flies produced. This is in accordance with the hypothesis that cultivation methods can give large enough changes in composition of plant foods to affect physiological aspects important for health of consumers. It indicates that further stusies should be made of the links between plant cultivation, plant composition and health, for example regarding the question of the nutritional value of organic versus conventional food

    Orangulas: effect of scheduled visual enrichment on behavioral and endocrine aspects of a captive orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus)

    Captivity may have adverse effects on captive great apes, as they spend much more of their time engaged in foraging and other activities in the wild. Enrichment interventions have the potential to alleviate the adverse effects of captivity by introducing novel stimuli. In orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus), interactive digital enrichment has proven effective at engaging users out of their own free will, in exchange for nothing but the experience. This article reports the results of scheduled visual enrichment in the form of “orangulas”—one-hour long videos of footage consisting mainly of open spaces in different environments, with which the pongid participant could engage at free will. The efficacy of the orangulas were measured with both behavioural and endocrine measurements, concluding that scheduled visual enrichment has the potential to improve the welfare of captive orangutans by providing novel stimuli in the context of largely stable environments

    Insulin Treatment Attenuates Small Nerve Fiber Damage in Rat Model of Type 2 Diabetes

    Introduction. Current clinical guidelines for management of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) emphasize good glycemic control. However, this has limited effect on prevention of DPN in type 2 diabetic (T2D) patients. This study investigates the effect of insulin treatment on development of DPN in a rat model of T2D to assess the underlying causes leading to DPN. Methods. Twelve-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated to a normal chow diet or a 45% kcal high-fat diet. After eight weeks, the high-fat fed animals received a mild dose of streptozotocin to induce hyperglycemia. Four weeks after diabetes induction, the diabetic animals were allocated into three treatment groups receiving either no insulin or insulin-releasing implants in a high or low dose. During the 12-week treatment period, blood glucose and body weight were monitored weekly, whereas Hargreaves’ test was performed four, eight, and 12 weeks after treatment initiation. At study termination, several blood parameters, body composition, and neuropathy endpoints were assessed. Results. Insulin treatment lowered blood glucose in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, both doses of insulin lowered lipids and increased body fat percentage. High-dose insulin treatment attenuated small nerve fiber damage assessed by Hargreaves’ test and intraepidermal nerve fiber density compared to untreated diabetes and low-dose insulin; however, neuropathy was not completely prevented by tight glycemic control. Linear regression analysis revealed that glycemic status, circulating lipids, and sciatic nerve sorbitol level were all negatively associated with the small nerve fiber damage observed. Conclusion. In summary, our data suggest that high-dose insulin treatment attenuates small nerve fiber damage. Furthermore, data also indicate that both poor glycemic control and dyslipidemia are associated with disease progression. Consequently, this rat model of T2D seems to fit well with progression of DPN in humans and could be a relevant preclinical model to use in relation to research investigating treatment opportunities for DPN

    What do Danish children eat, and does the diet meet the recommendations?:Baseline data from the OPUS School Meal Study

    A child's diet is an important determinant for later health, growth and development. In Denmark, most children in primary school bring their own packed lunch from home and attend an after-school care institution. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the food, energy and nutrient intake of Danish school children in relation to dietary guidelines and nutrient recommendations, and to assess the food intake during and outside school hours. In total, 834 children from nine public schools located in the eastern part of Denmark were included in this cross-sectional study and 798 children (95·7 %) completed the dietary assessment sufficiently (August–November 2011). The whole diet was recorded during seven consecutive days using the Web-based Dietary Assessment Software for Children (WebDASC). Compared with the food-based dietary guidelines and nutrient recommendations, 85 % of the children consumed excess amounts of red meat, 89 % consumed too much saturated fat, and 56 % consumed too much added sugar. Additionally 35 or 91 % of the children (depending on age group) consumed insufficient amounts of fruits and vegetables, 85 % consumed insufficient amounts of fish, 86 % consumed insufficient amounts of dietary fibre, 60 or 84 % had an insufficient Fe intake (depending on age group), and 96 % had an insufficient vitamin D intake. The study also showed that there is a higher intake of fruits and bread during school hours than outside school hours; this is not the case with, for example, fish and vegetables, and future studies should investigate strategies to increase fish and vegetable intake during school hours

    Effect of dairy fat on plasma phytanic acid in healthy volunteers - a randomized controlled study

    BACKGROUND: Phytanic acid produced in ruminants from chlorophyll may have preventive effects on the metabolic syndrome, partly due to its reported RXR and PPAR- Îą agonist activity. Milk from cows fed increased levels of green plant material, contains increased phytanic acid concentrations, but it is unknown to what extent minor increases in phytanic acid content in dairy fat leads to higher circulating levels of phytanic acid in plasma of the consumers. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if cow feeding regimes affects concentration of plasma phytanic acid and risk markers of the metabolic syndrome in human. DESIGN: In a double-blind, randomized, 4 wk, parallel intervention study 14 healthy young subjects were given 45 g milk fat/d from test butter and cheese with 0.24 wt% phytanic acid or a control diet with 0.13 wt% phytanic acid. Difference in phytanic acid was obtained by feeding roughage with low or high content of chlorophyll. RESULTS: There tended to be a difference in plasma phytanic acid (P = 0.0730) concentration after the dietary intervention. Plasma phytanic acid increased significantly within both groups with the highest increase in control group (24%) compared to phytanic acid group (15%). There were no significant effects of phytanic acid on risk markers for the metabolic syndrome. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that increased intake of dairy fat modify the plasma phytanic acid concentration, regardless of cows feeding regime and the minor difference in dietary phytanic acid. Whether the phytanic acid has potential to affects the risk markers of the metabolic syndrome in human still remain to be elucidated

    Pharmacological inhibition of I-K1 by PA-6 in isolated rat hearts affects ventricular repolarization and refractoriness

    The inwardly rectifying potassium current (I(K) (1)) conducted through K(ir)2.X channels contribute to repolarization of the cardiac action potential and to stabilization of the resting membrane potential in cardiomyocytes. Our aim was to investigate the effect of the recently discovered I(K) (1) inhibitor PA‐6 on action potential repolarization and refractoriness in isolated rat hearts. Transiently transfected HEK‐293 cells expressing I(K) (1) were voltage‐clamped with ramp protocols. Langendorff‐perfused heart experiments were performed on male Sprague–Dawley rats, effective refractory period, Wenckebach cycle length, and ventricular effective refractory period were determined following 200 nmol/L PA‐6 perfusion. 200 nmol/L PA‐6 resulted in a significant time‐latency in drug effect on the I(K) (1) current expressed in HEK‐293 cells, giving rise to a maximal effect at 20 min. In the Langendorff‐perfused heart experiments, PA‐6 prolonged the ventricular action potential duration at 90% repolarization (from 41.8 ± 6.5 msec to 72.6 ± 21.1 msec, 74% compared to baseline, P < 0.01, n = 6). In parallel, PA‐6 significantly prolonged the ventricular effective refractory period compared to baseline (from 34.8 ± 4.6 msec to 58.1 ± 14.7 msec, 67%, P < 0.01, n = 6). PA‐6 increased the short‐term beat‐to‐beat variability and ventricular fibrillation was observed in two of six hearts. Neither atrial ERP nor duration of atrial fibrillation was altered following PA‐6 application. The results show that pharmacological inhibition of cardiac I(K) (1) affects ventricular action potential repolarization and refractoriness and increases the risk of ventricular arrhythmia in isolated rat hearts

    “Corona Cooking” : The interrelation between emotional response to the first lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic and cooking attitudes and behaviour in Denmark

    For this study, the authors measured attitudes toward shopping for food and cooking, before and during the first lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, among a sample of 526 Danish consumers, using an online survey. To analyse changes due to the lockdown, they applied a latent class Markov model, which revealed four states: middle of the road, love cooking (and like shopping), like shopping and cooking, and do not like shopping or cooking. In estimating transition probabilities, the findings reveal that most respondents remained in the same state before and during the lockdown, but those that changed were more likely to exhibit relatively higher liking of shopping and cooking. These states also reflect variations in people’s food literacy and self-reported food consumption. Finally, respondents with stronger negative emotional reactions to the lockdown were more likely to change their states.© 2021 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd.
