    Adverse effects of personalized automated feedback

    In large classes with hundreds of students, it is rarely feasible to provide students with individual feedback on their performance. Automatically generated personalized feedback on students' performance might help to overcome this issue, but available empirical effect studies are inconclusive due to lack of methodological rigor. This study uses a repetitive randomized control experiment to explore whether automatically generated feedback is effective and for which students. Our results indicate that feedback does not have a positive effect on performance for all students. Some groups benefit from receiving personalized feedback, while others do not perform better than the control group. Students that perform average benefit most from receiving personalized feedback. However, lower-scoring students who received feedback tend to have lower attrition rates and if they participate at the final exam, their performance is not higher than the control group. Therefore, providing automated feedback is not something that should be undertaken mindlessly.</p

    Load-based generic polca: performance assessement using simulation

    POLCA (i.e. Paired-cell Overlapping Loops of Cards with Authorization) is a card-based decision support system for production control, developed to support the adoption of Quick Response Manufacturing. Two variants of POLCA have been proposed in the literature to improve POLCA performance: Load Based POLCA and Generic POLCA. In this paper, we combine these two variants into a single production control system and analyse its performance for different backlog-sequencing rules. The results of a simulation study carried out for a make-to-order flow shop, support the strategy of combining these two POLCA variants and show that capacity-slack backlog sequencing based on corrected aggregate load have the potential for improving performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Respiratory Syncytial Virus, Human Metapneumovirus, and Parainfluenza Virus Infections in Lung Transplant Recipients:A Systematic Review of Outcomes and Treatment Strategies

    BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza virus (PIV), and human metapneumovirus (hMPV) are increasingly associated with chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) in lung transplant recipients (LTR). This systematic review primarily aimed to assess outcomes of RSV/PIV/hMPV infections in LTR and secondarily to assess evidence regarding the efficacy of ribavirin. METHODS: Relevant databases were queried and study outcomes extracted using a standardized method and summarized. RESULTS: Nineteen retrospective and 12 prospective studies were included (total 1060 cases). Pooled 30-day mortality was low (0-3%), but CLAD progression 180-360 days postinfection was substantial (pooled incidences 19-24%) and probably associated with severe infection. Ribavirin trended toward effectiveness for CLAD prevention in exploratory meta-analysis (odds ratio [OR] 0.61, [0.27-1.18]), although results were highly variable between studies. CONCLUSIONS: RSV/PIV/hMPV infection was followed by a high CLAD incidence. Treatment options, including ribavirin, are limited. There is an urgent need for high-quality studies to provide better treatment options for these infections

    Introduction: Infective endocarditis (IE) is associated with a high in-hospital and long term mortality. Although progress has been made in diagnostic approach and management of IE, morbidity and mortality of IE remain high. In the latest European guidelines, the importance of the multi-modality imaging in diagnosis and follow up of IE is emphasized. Aim: The aim was to provide information regarding mortality and adverse events of IE, to determine IE characteristics and to assess current use of imaging in the diagnostic workup of IE. Methods: This is a prospective observational cohort study. We used data from the EURO-ENDO registry. Seven hospitals in the Netherlands have participated and included patients with IE between April 2016 and April 2018. Results: A total of 139 IE patients were included. Prosthetic valve endocarditis constituted 32.4% of the cases, cardiac device related IE 7.2% and aortic root prosthesis IE 3.6%. In-hospital mortality was 14.4% (20 patients) and one-year mortality was 21.6% (30 patients). The incidence of embolic events under treatment was 16.5%, while congestive heart failure or cardiogenic shock occurred in 15.1% of the patients. Transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography were performed most frequently (97.8%; 81.3%) and within 3 days after IE suspicion, followed by 18F‑fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (45.3%) within 6 days and multi-slice computed tomography (42.4%) within 7 days. Conclusion: We observed a high percentage of prosthetic valve endocarditis, rapid and extensive use of imaging and a relatively low in-hospital and one-year mortality of IE in the Netherlands.     Evaluation of the Antiviral Response to Zanamivir Administered Intravenously for Treatment of Critically Ill Patients With Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) Infection

    A retrospective nationwide study on the use of intravenous (IV) zanamivir in patients receiving intensive care who were pretreated with oseltamivir in the Netherlands was performed. In 6 of 13 patients with a sustained reduction of the viral load, the median time to start IV zanamivir was 9 days (range, 4–11 days) compared with 14 days (range, 6–21 days) in 7 patients without viral load reduction (P = .052). Viral load response did not influence mortality. We conclude that IV zanamivir as late add-on therapy has limited effectiveness. The effect of an immediate start with IV zanamivir monotherapy or in combination with other drugs need to be evaluated

    Ground-gamma band mixing and odd-even staggering in heavy deformed nuclei

    It is proposed that the odd-even staggering (OES) in the γ\gamma- bands of heavy deformed nuclei can be reasonably characterized by a discrete approximation of the fourth derivative of the odd-even energy difference as a function of angular momentum LL. This quantity exhibits a well developed staggering pattern (zigzagging behavior with alternating signs) in rare earth nuclei and actinides with long γ\gamma- bands (L10L\geq 10). It is shown that the OES can be interpreted reasonably as the result of the interaction of the γ\gamma band with the ground band in the framework of a Vector Boson Model with SU(3) dynamical symmetry. The model energy expression reproduces successfully the staggering pattern in all considered nuclei up to L=1213L=12-13. The general behavior of the OES effect in rotational regions is studied in terms of the ground--γ\gamma band-mixing interaction, showing that strong OES effect occurs in regions with strong ground--γ\gamma band-mixing interaction. The approach used allows a detailed comparison of the OES in γ\gamma bands with the other kinds of staggering effects in nuclei and diatomic molecules.Comment: 25 pages, 11 postscript figure
