The Impact of Social Media Signals on Supplier Selection: Insights from Two Experiments
Purpose: Online B2B markets offer buyers a new source of information provided by social media signals about suppliers. These signals have not yet received much attention in the supplier selection literature. This study advances our understanding of how buyers respond to social media signals in the supplier selection process.
Design: We develop a choice-based conjoint experimental design to isolate and manipulate two signals from social media: volume (i.e. the number of ratings) and valence (i.e. average evaluation of the ratings). We test how these signals are interpreted in the context of varying deal sizes and price points.
Findings: Both volume and valence are positively correlated with supplier selection. However, (i) the signals exhibit diminishing returns and (ii) the efficacy of valence is interpreted in the context of volume. We also find that (iii) there is no influence of the deal size and that (iv) the relationships between signals and supplier selection are negatively moderated by deviations from the reference price.
Implications: Social media signals should be considered in supplier selection decisions as they convey valuable information to the buyer. However, signals go through a process of interpretation which has implications for buyers, suppliers, and owners of online B2B markets.
Originality: Our research opens new lines of inquiry in behavioural operations management research regarding the mechanisms by which buyers interpret social media signals and how these ultimately influence their choice
The Wendelstein Calar Alto Pixellensing Project (WeCAPP): the M31 Nova catalogue
We present light curves from the novae detected in the long-term, M31
monitoring WeCAPP project. The goal of WeCAPP is to constrain the compact dark
matter fraction of the M31 halo with microlensing observations. As a by product
we have detected 91 novae benefiting from the high cadence and highly sensitive
difference imaging technique required for pixellensing. We thus can now present
the largest CCD and optical filters based nova light curve sample up-to-date
towards M31. We also obtained thorough coverage of the light curve before and
after the eruption thanks to the long-term monitoring. We apply the nova
taxonomy proposed by Strope et al. (2010) to our nova candidates and found 29
S-class novae, 10 C-class novae, 2 O-class novae and 1 J-class nova. We have
investigated the universal decline law advocated by Hachichu and Kato (2006) on
the S-class novae. In addition, we correlated our catalogue with the literature
and found 4 potential recurrent novae. Part of our catalogue has been used to
search for optical counter-parts of the super soft X-ray sources detected in
M31 (Pietsch et al. 2005). Optical surveys like WeCAPP, and coordinated with
multi-wavelength observation, will continue to shed light on the underlying

Motivational Interviewing to Increase Physical Activity Behavior in Cancer Patients: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trials
OBJECTIVE:
This pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed at evaluating the feasibility and potential efficacy of a motivational interviewing (MI) intervention to increase physical activity (PA) behavior in cancer patients.
METHODS:
Participants were randomly assigned to an experimental group with standard care plus 12 MI sessions within 12 weeks or a control group with standard care only. The number of recruited participants and the modality of recruitment were recorded to describe the reach of the study. The acceptability of the study was estimated using the attrition rate during the intervention phase. The potential efficacy of the intervention was evaluated by analyzing the PA behavior.
RESULTS:
Twenty-five participants were recruited within the 16-month recruitment period (1.6 participants per month). Five participants (38.5%) from the experimental group (n = 13) and one participant (8.3%) from the control group (n = 12) dropped out of the study before the end of the intervention phase. No group by time interaction effect for PA behavior was observed at the end of the intervention.
CONCLUSION:
Due to the low recruitment rate and compliance, no conclusion can be drawn regarding the efficacy of MI to increase PA behavior in cancer patients. Moreover, the current literature cannot provide any evidence on the effectiveness of MI to increase PA in cancer survivors. Future RCTs should consider that the percentage of uninterested patients to join the study may be as high as 60%. Overrecruitment (30% to 40%) is also recommended to accommodate the elevated attrition rate
Alpha-conotoxin ImI disrupts central control of swimming in the medicinal leech
Medicinal leeches (Hirudo spp.) swim using a metachronal, front-to-back undulation. The behavior is generated by central pattern generators (CPGs) distributed along the animal’s midbody ganglia and is coordinated by both central and peripheral mechanisms. Here we report that a component of the venom of Conus imperialis, α-conotoxin ImI, known to block nicotinic acetyl-choline receptors in other species,
disrupts swimming. Leeches injected with the toxin swam in circles with exaggerated dorsoventral bends and reduced forward velocity. Fictive swimming in isolated nerve cords was even more strongly disrupted, indicating that the toxin targets the CPGs and central coordination, while peripheral coordination partially rescues the behavior in intact animals

Dealloying of Platinum-Aluminum Thin Films Part II. Electrode Performance
Highly porous Pt/Al thin film electrodes on yttria stabilized zirconia
electrolytes were prepared by dealloying of co-sputtered Pt/Al films. The
oxygen reduction capability of the resulting electrodes was analyzed in a solid
oxide fuel cell setup at elevated temperatures. During initial heating to 523 K
exceptionally high performances compared to conventional Pt thin film
electrodes were measured. This results from the high internal surface area and
large three phase boundary length obtained by the dealloying process. Exposure
to elevated temperatures of 673 K or 873 K gave rise to degradation of the
electrode performance, which was primarily attributed to the oxidation of
