    The Changing Narratives of Death, Dying, and HIV in the United Kingdom

    Death and infection were closely linked from the start of the HIV epidemic, until successful treatments became available. The initial impact of mostly young, gay men dying from HIV was powerful in shaping UK responses. Neoliberal discourses developed at the same time, particularly focusing on how citizens (rather than the state) should take responsibility to improve health. Subsequently “successful ageing” became an allied discourse, further marginalising death discussions. Our study reflected on a broad range of meanings around death within the historical UK epidemic, to examine how dying narratives shape contemporary HIV experiences. Fifty-one participants including people living with HIV, professionals, and activists were recruited for semistructured interviews. Assuming a symbolic interactionist framework, analysis highlighted how HIV deaths were initially experienced as not only traumatic but also energizing, leading to creativity. With effective antiretrovirals, dying changed shape (e.g., loss of death literacy), and better integration of palliative care was recommended

    Amine reactivity with charged sulfuric acid clusters

    The distribution of charged species produced by electrospray of an ammonium sulfate solution in both positive and negative polarities is examined using Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS). Positively-charged ammonium bisulfate cluster composition differs significantly from negatively-charged cluster composition. For positively-charged clusters all sulfuric acid is neutralized to bisulfate, whereas for negatively-charged clusters the degree of sulfuric acid neutralization is cluster size-dependent. With increasing cluster size (and, therefore, a decreasing role of charge), both positively- and negatively-charged cluster compositions converge toward ammonium bisulfate. The reactivity of negatively-charged sulfuric acid-ammonia clusters with dimethylamine and ammonia is also investigated by FTICR-MS. Two series of negatively-charged clusters are investigated: [(HSO<sub>4</sub>)(H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>x</sub>]<sup>−</sup> and [(NH<sub>4</sub>)<sub>x</sub>(HSO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>x+1</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>3</sub>]<sup>−</sup>. Dimethylamine substitution for ammonia in [(NH<sub>4</sub>)<sub> x</sub>(HSO<sub>4</sub>)<sub> x+1</sub>(H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>)<sub>3</sub>]<sup>−</sup> clusters is nearly collision-limited, and subsequent addition of dimethylamine to neutralize H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub> to bisulfate is within one order of magnitude of the substitution rate. Dimethylamine addition to [(HSO<sub>4</sub>) (H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>)<sub> x</sub>]<sup>−</sup> clusters is either not observed or very slow. The results of this study indicate that amine chemistry will be evident and important only in large ambient negative ions (><i>m/z</i> 400), whereas amine chemistry may be evident in small ambient positive ions. Addition of ammonia to unneutralized clusters occurs at a rate that is ~2–3 orders of magnitude slower than incorporation of dimethylamine either by substitution or addition. Therefore, in locations where amine levels are within a few orders of magnitude of ammonia levels, amine chemistry may compete favorably with ammonia chemistry

    HIV-related stigma in the UK then and now: to what extent are we on track to eliminate stigma? A qualitative investigation

    Background The introduction of effective antiretroviral treatment in the late 1990s led to the perception that HIV was a chronic but manageable condition. Nevertheless, stigma remains one of the major hurdles for people living with HIV (PLWH) to accessing healthcare and biomedical preventions. Thus, Fast Track Cities has set a target of zero HIV discrimination by 2030 as part of its strategy to end HIV transmission. Methods Fifty-three participants from the United Kingdom, including PLWH (n = 21, 40%), health and social care workers (n = 24, 45%), and charity workers and activists (n = 13, 25%), were recruited. Semi-structured interviews investigated stigma and discrimination, focusing on both before and after the widespread use of effective antiretroviral treatment in the late 1990s. Data were analysed using a thematic approach. Results Before effective antiretroviral treatment narratives were shaped by two main themes: 1) the media’s role in influencing public opinion and contributing to misunderstandings of HIV transmission; and 2) personal experiences of HIV-related stigma, which for PLWH included incidents of physical violence and aggression, as well as fears of their HIV status being publicised. Contemporary narratives on stigma experiences were organised around four themes: 1) discrimination in healthcare settings; 2) stigma amongst men who have sex with men (MSM); 3) stigma towards African and Afro-Caribbean PLWH; and 4) the limits of change in public HIV-related knowledge and attitudes. Contemporary narratives indicated a reduction in enacted stigma, but continued anticipation of discrimination and self-reported shame, particularly in MSM and African and Afro-Caribbean PLWH. Conclusion The nature of stigma against those with HIV has evolved. The intersection of PLWH and minority groups (e.g. MSM and African and Afro-Caribbean persons) may enhance anticipatory and internalised stigma, with some suggestion that this may contribute to reduced engagement in HIV care and prevention services. Our findings indicate the need for further research in this area, as well as proactive interventions with community groups to enhance knowledge of HIV

    The COMPLETE Nature of the Warm Dust Ring in Perseus

    The Perseus molecular cloud complex is a ~30pc long chain of molecular clouds most well-known for the two star-forming clusters NGC1333 and IC348 and the well-studied outflow source in B5. However, when studied at mid- to far-infrared wavelengths the region is dominated by a ~10pc diameter shell of warm dust, likely generated by an HII region caused by the early B-star HD278942. Using a revised calibration technique the COMPLETE team has produced high-sensitivity temperature and column-density maps of the Perseus region from IRAS Sky Survey Atlas (ISSA) 60 and 100um data. In this paper, we combine the ISSA based dust-emission maps with other observations collected as part of the COMPLETE Survey, along with archival H-alpha and MSX observations. Molecular line observations from FCRAO and extinction maps constructed by applying the NICER method to the 2MASS catalog provide independent estimates of the ``true'' column-density of the shell. H-alpha emission in the region of the shell confirms that it is most likely an HII region located behind the cloud complex, and 8um data from MSX indicates that the shell may be interacting with the cloud. Finally, the two polarisation components previously seen towards background stars in the region can be explained by the association of the stronger component with the shell. If confirmed, this would be the first observation of a parsec-scale swept-up magnetic field.Comment: Accepted by ApJ.     Light-stable rhodopsin. I. A rhodopsin analog reconstituted with a nonisomerizable 11-cis retinal derivative

    With the aim of preparing a light-stable rhodopsin-like pigment, an analog, II, of 11-cis retinal was synthesized in which isomerization of the C11-C12 cis-double bond is blocked by a cyclohexene ring built around the C10 to C13-methyl. The analog II formed a rhodopsin-like pigment (rhodopsin-II) with opsin expressed in COS-1 cells and with opsin from rod outer segments. The rate of rhodopsin-II formation from II and opsin was ~10 times slower than that of rhodopsin from 11-cis retinal and opsin. After solubilization in dodecyl maltoside and immunoaffinity purification, rhodopsin-II displayed an absorbance ratio (A280nm/A512nm) of 1.6, virtually identical with that of rhodopsin. Acid denaturation of rhodopsin-II formed a chromophore with λmax, 452 nm, characteristic of protonated retinyl Schiff base. The ground state properties of rhodopsin-II were similar to those of rhodopsin in extinction coefficient (41,200 M-1 cm-1) and opsin-shift (2600 cm-1). Rhodopsin-II was stable to hydroxylamine in the dark, while light-dependent bleaching by hydroxylamine was slowed by ~2 orders of magnitude relative to rhodopsin. Illumination of rhodopsin-II for 10 s caused ~3 nm blue-shift and 3% loss of visible absorbance. Prolonged illumination caused a maximal blue-shift up to ~20 nm and ~40% loss of visible absorbance. An apparent photochemical steady state was reached after 12 min of illumination. Subsequent acid denaturation indicated that the retinyl Schiff base linkage was intact. A red-shift (~12 nm) in λmax and a 45% recovery of visible absorbance was observed after returning the 12-min illuminated pigment to darkness.     Turbulence driven by outflow-blown cavities in the molecular cloud of NGC 1333

    Outflows from young stellar objects have been identified as a possible source of turbulence in molecular clouds. To investigate the relationship between outflows, cloud dynamics and turbulence, we compare the kinematics of the molecular gas associated with NGC 1333, traced in 13CO(1-0), with the distribution of young stellar objects (YSOs) within. We find a velocity dispersion of ~ 1-1.6 km/s in 13CO that does not significantly vary across the cloud, and is uncorrelated with the number of nearby young stellar outflows identified from optical and submillimeter observations. However, from velocity channel maps we identify about 20 cavities or depressions in the 13CO intensity of scales > 0.1-0.2 pc and velocity widths 1-3 km/s. The cavities exhibit limb brightened rims in both individual velocity channel maps and position velocity diagrams, suggesting that they are slowly expanding. We interpret these cavities to be remnants of past YSO outflow activity: If these cavities are presently empty, they would fill in on time scales of a million years. This can exceed the lifetime of a YSO outflow phase, or the transit time of the central star through the cavity, explaining the the absence of any clear correlation between the cavities and YSO outflows. We find that the momentum and energy deposition associated with the expansion of the cavities is sufficient to power the turbulence in the cloud. In this way we conclude that the cavities are an important intermediary step between the conversion of YSO outflow energy and momentum into cloud turbulent motions.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. Pathogenic variants in the Myocilin gene (MYOC) cause juvenile open angle glaucoma (JOAG) in 8-36% of cases, and display an autosomal dominant inheritance with high penetrance. Molecular diagnosis is important for early identification as therapies are effective in minimizing vision loss and MYOC variants can be associated to severe glaucoma. MYOC variants are usually inherited, however a fifth of carriers do not report a family history. The occurrence of de novo MYOC variants is currently unknown. CASE PRESENTATION: In this study we investigated a 14 year old male Caucasian patient diagnosed with JOAG, and no family history of glaucoma. A novel probably deleterious MYOC:p.(Pro254Leu) variant was identified in the index case. This variant was not present in the parents or the siblings. CONCLUSION: This is the second report of a de novo MYOC variant in a sporadic case of JOAG and it is currently unknown if this mechanism occurs more frequently. This finding emphasizes the importance of screening individuals with JOAG for MYOC mutations irrespective of a negative family history

    Mooring systems for marine energy converters

The final version is available from IEEE via the DOI in this record.This paper discusses several new technologies for mooring floating marine energy converter (MEC) devices, such as wave energy generators, tidal current turbines and floating wind turbines. The principal mooring component is a special nylon fiber rope which provides cyclic tension fatigue endurance much superior to that of conventional nylon ropes. The nylon fiber is treated with a new proprietary coating which has excellent wet yarn abrasion properties. The parallel-subrope type rope construction further reduces internal abrasion. Extensive laboratory testing was carried out on this new nylon rope design. Cyclic tension fatigue tests were conducted at mean loads and load amplitudes typical of actual service conditions and at higher mean loads and amplitudes. These tests demonstrate that the special nylon rope has essentially the same, desirable stretch characteristics as conventional nylon rope and has much better endurance performance. The mooring connection to the floating MEC device consists of a high-modulus fiber rope pendant which passes through a low-friction bell-mouth nylon fairlead on the MEC device. This eliminates the use of heavy, unreliable chain in this critical connection. A unique bag anchor system would be used on sand, clay, rock and other sea beds in which conventional drag embedment anchors and driven piles are impractical. The bag anchor consists of a large abrasion resistant carcass with lifting straps and top closure. The bag is transported to site in a collapsed form and is filled with local sand or aggregate to provide ballast weight. Several or many such bags are enclosed within a fiber rope net for deployment and are grouped together for connection to the mooring line. The paper will be of particular interest to designers of moorings for MEC systems in shallow water and severe wave environments.     The COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming Regions: Phase I Data

    We present an overview of data available for the Ophiuchus and Perseus molecular clouds from ``Phase I'' of the COMPLETE Survey of Star-Forming Regions. This survey provides a range of data complementary to the Spitzer Legacy Program ``From Molecular Cores to Planet Forming Disks.'' Phase I includes: Extinction maps derived from 2MASS near-infrared data using the NICER algorithm; extinction and temperature maps derived from IRAS 60 and 100um emission; HI maps of atomic gas; 12CO and 13CO maps of molecular gas; and submillimetre continuum images of emission from dust in dense cores. Not unexpectedly, the morphology of the regions appears quite different depending on the column-density tracer which is used, with IRAS tracing mainly warmer dust and CO being biased by chemical, excitation and optical depth effects. Histograms of column-density distribution are presented, showing that extinction as derived from 2MASS/NICER gives the closest match to a log-normal distribution as is predicted by numerical simulations.
