A New Generation Gap? Some thoughts on the consequences of increasingly early ICT first contact

One possible consequence of ICT’s rapid rise will be a new ‘generation gap’ arising from differing perceptions of the learning technologies. The nature, causes and consequences of this gap are of interest to educational practitioners and policymakers. This paper uses data from an ongoing project together with a synopsis of research to describe the ICT-based generation gap that currently exists between students and their teachers and parents. It is argued that this gap may exist between students differing in age by as little as five years. Results from a related project exploring Networked Information and Communication Literacy Skills (NICLS), are used to introduce a discussion on the nature of any skills gap that must be addressed in the light of this generation gap

Quantum-enhanced gyroscopy with rotating anisotropic Bose–Einstein condensates

High-precision gyroscopes are a key component of inertial navigation systems. By considering matter wave gyroscopes that make use of entanglement it should be possible to gain some advantages in terms of sensitivity, size, and resources used over unentangled optical systems. In this paper we consider the details of such a quantum-enhanced atom interferometry scheme based on atoms trapped in a carefully-chosen rotating trap. We consider all the steps: entanglement generation, phase imprinting, and read-out of the signal and show that quantum enhancement should be possible in principle. While the improvement in performance over equivalent unentangled schemes is small, our feasibility study opens the door to further developments and improvements

Engineering entanglement for metrology with rotating matter waves

Entangled states of rotating, trapped ultracold bosons form a very promising scenario for quantum metrology. In order to employ such states for metrology, it is vital to understand their detailed form and the enhanced accuracy with which they could measure phase, in this case generated through rotation. In this work, we study the rotation of ultracold bosons in an asymmetric trapping potential beyond the lowest Landau level (LLL) approximation. We demonstrate that while the LLL can identify reasonably the critical frequency for a quantum phase transition and entangled state generation, it is vital to go beyond the LLL to identify the details of the state and quantify the quantum Fisher information (which bounds the accuracy of the phase measurement). We thus identify a new parameter regime for useful entangled state generation, amenable to experimental investigation

Species identification and morphological differences of anguillid glass eels recruiting to Viti Levu Island of Fiji in the western South Pacific

There are six species of anguillid eels that live in various regions of the western South Pacific but the species compositions of glass eels recruiting to many of the islands of the region are not well known. A total of 1368 anguillid glass eels were collected fortnightly at the mouth of a small river at Namelimeli near Navua in Fiji Islands between April 2015 and June 2016. These were found through DNA barcoding to have a species composition comprising of two longfin eels Anguilla marmorata and A. megastoma, and one shortfin eel A. obscura. 35 glass eels from each species were then selected for morphological studies, it was found that the external morphological characters of anodorsal length ratios, caudal pigmentation patterns, and the internal characters of total, predorsal, and anodorsal vertebral counts were sufficient to classify these three species using morphological characters alone. These findings will simplify research and monitoring techniques of anguillid glass eel recruitment for conservation, fisheries management or aquaculture purposes in the South Pacific

Penerapan Engineering Control Dan Administrative Control Sebagai Bentuk Intervensi Ergonomi Di PT Ganding Toolsindo

PT. Ganding Toolsindo,sebuah Perusahaan manufaktur yang bergerak di bidang industri otomotif, mengalami permasalahan ergonomi berdasarkan tanda-tanda umum terjadinya permasalahan ergonomi yaitu apparent trend in accidents and injuries, incidence of CTD (cumulative trauma disorder), absenteeism & high turnover rates, employee complaints, poor quality,dan manual material handling. Permasalahan yang menjadi focus untuk diselesaikan oleh Perusahaan adalah CTD. Penelitian pada dua stasiun kerja utama yang bermasalah yaitu mesin chinfong dan ada yang menggunakan tiga tools yaitu Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA), Nordic Body Map dan pengukuran momen tubuh dengan software Mannequin Pro 7. Hasil dari ketiga tools ini menunjukkan perlu dilakukan intervensi ergonomi dengan pendekatan engineering control maupun administrative control. Intervensi dengan pendekatan engineering control dilakukan dengan meninggikan area kerja dan modifikasi bangku kerja, sedangkan pendekatan administrative control dilakukan dengan menerapkan rotasi kerja dan pemanasan tubuh sebelum bekerja. Hasil implementasi intervensi ergonomic menunjukkan adalanya penurunan pada skor RULA, persentasi keluhan tubuh dan penggunaan momen tubuh. Ganding Toolsindo, a manufacturing company engaged in the automotive industry, ergonomics problems experienced by general signs of ergonomics problems are apparent trend in accidents and injuries, incidence of CTD (cumulative trauma disorder), high absenteeism & turnover rates, employee complaints, poor quality, and manual material handling. The problems to be resolved by the company's focus for the CTD. Research on the two main work stations that are problematic and aida chinfong machine uses three tools namely Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (Rula), Nordic Body Map and measurement of body moments with Mannequin Pro 7 software. The results of all three tools show ergonomics intervention needs to be done with engineering controls and administrative approach control. Intervention by engineering control approach conducted by elevating the work area and modification work benches, while the administrative approach to control is done by implementing job rotation and heating of the body before work. This study aimed to describe social economic villagers of Kampung Jawa who work This study aimed to describe social economic villagers of Kampung Jawa who work in Labuan Jukung Beach. The method used descriptive method. The population was 23 people. Based on the research results, 0.01% of the population working in Labuan Jukung Beach became merchants, inn businessmen, employees and managers. The average income of traders per month is Rp 2.944.444, the average income of inn businessmen per month is Rp 10,800.000, the average income of inn employer per month is Rp 500.000, the average income of managers per month is Rp 1.265.100, education level of the majority of children is middle level (senior high school), there was graduated and was studying, 20 peoples (86.96%) completed their needs with the minimum basic, 20 peoples (86.96%) were on the verge of poor and non-poor.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan sosial ekonomi penduduk Desa Kampung Jawa yang bekerja di Pantai Labuhan Jukung. Metode yang digunakan metode deskriptif. Populasinya berjumlah 23 orang. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian Sebanyak 0,01% penduduk bekerja di Obyek Wisata Pantai Labuhan Jukung antara lain menjadi pedagang, pengusaha penginapan, karyawannya dan pengelola.
