    Available quantitative data on solar total and spectral irradiance are examined in the context of utilization of solar irradiance for terrestrial applications of solar energy. The extraterrestrial solar total and spectral irradiance values are also reviewed. Computed values of solar spectral irradiance at ground level for different air mass values and various levels of atmospheric pollution or turbidity are presented. Wavelengths are given for computation of solar, absorptance, transmittance and reflectance by the 100 selected-ordinate method and by the 50 selected-ordinate method for air mass 1.5 and 2 solar spectral irradiance for the four levels of atmospheric pollution

    While nearly 100 species of sod webworms are known to occur in North America, the species complex and seasonal occurrence of these moths has been documented in relatively few states. For Ohio, there is little published record of the sod webworm species complex, and the seasonal occurrence of only a few economically important species has been documented. Using black light traps, sod web worm adult flight activity was monitored over the course of three to five years at four different locations throughout Ohio. In this paper we report the seasonal occurrence of sod web worms species captured at these locations. These data provide a historical benchmark of sod web­worm species diversity, local abundance, and seasonal occurrence in Ohio

    A Study on the Parallelization of Terrain-Covering Ant Robots Simulations

    Agent-based simulation is used as a tool for supporting (time-critical) decision making in differentiated contexts. Hence, techniques for speeding up the execution of agent-based models, such as Parallel Discrete Event Simulation (PDES), are of great relevance/benefit. On the other hand, parallelism entails that the final output provided by the simulator should closely match the one provided by a traditional sequential run. This is not obvious given that, for performance and efficiency reasons, parallel simulation engines do not allow the evaluation of global predicates on the simulation model evolution with arbitrary time-granularity along the simulation time-Axis. In this article we present a study on the effects of parallelization of agent-based simulations, focusing on complementary aspects such as performance and reliability of the provided simulation output. We target Terrain Covering Ant Robots (TCAR) simulations, which are useful in rescue scenarios to determine how many agents (i.e., robots) should be used to completely explore a certain terrain for possible victims within a given time. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

    Distinguishing cancerous from non-cancerous cells through analysis of electrical noise

    Since 1984, electric cell-substrate impedance sensing (ECIS) has been used to monitor cell behavior in tissue culture and has proven sensitive to cell morphological changes and cell motility. We have taken ECIS measurements on several cultures of non-cancerous (HOSE) and cancerous (SKOV) human ovarian surface epithelial cells. By analyzing the noise in real and imaginary electrical impedance, we demonstrate that it is possible to distinguish the two cell types purely from signatures of their electrical noise. Our measures include power-spectral exponents, Hurst and detrended fluctuation analysis, and estimates of correlation time; principal-component analysis combines all the measures. The noise from both cancerous and non-cancerous cultures shows correlations on many time scales, but these correlations are stronger for the non-cancerous cells.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures; submitted to PR

    Psychological contracting making obligations explicit to support a transformative change partnership

    The psychological contract comprises the implicit perceptions of mutual obligations that two parties hold towards each other. We examine the creation and maintenance of an explicit psychological contract designed to facilitate a new relationship between senior representatives of five hospitals and senior representatives of their regulator. This ‘new deal’ was created to implement new routines and practices with the aim of transforming the quality and efficiency of care delivery in the NHS. A co-created explicit psychological contract clarified the behavioural principles which were to guide the collaboration. We build on Rousseau et al.’s (2018) dynamic phase model of the psycholocial contract, and use a sensemaking and sensegiving lens to explore the processes related to creation and maintenance of the explicit psychological contract. We draw upon 53 hours of observation and 52 interviews, observed over a period of twenty-four months. Our data evidences how events can disrupt the established psychological contract and how subsequently, both parties attempt to use the disruption to reinstate the relationship. We propose that these disruptions occur because the explicit psychological contract has become implicit, thereby a disruption can serve to pull the psychological contract back into the consciousness, reinforcing the values orginally agreed

    Schubert calculus of Richardson varieties stable under spherical Levi subgroups

    We observe that the expansion in the basis of Schubert cycles for H∗(G/B)H^*(G/B) of the class of a Richardson variety stable under a spherical Levi subgroup is described by a theorem of Brion. Using this observation, along with a combinatorial model of the poset of certain symmetric subgroup orbit closures, we give positive combinatorial descriptions of certain Schubert structure constants on the full flag variety in type AA. Namely, we describe cu,vwc_{u,v}^w when uu and vv are inverse to Grassmannian permutations with unique descents at pp and qq, respectively. We offer some conjectures for similar rules in types BB and DD, associated to Richardson varieties stable under spherical Levi subgroups of SO(2n+1,\C) and SO(2n,\C), respectively.Comment: Section 4 significantly shortened, and other minor changes made as suggested by referees.
