    Intoxicação por paracetamol em gatos

    Get PDF
Paracetamol intoxication in cats occurs due to accidental or iatrogenic exposure, when the owners administers the medication with the intention of treating their pet. Cats are deficient in terms of biotransformation, so even small doses of the drug can cause toxicity. Among the clinical signs, cyanosis, depression, icterus, edema of face and limbs, tachypnea, dyspnea, anorexia, weakness, vomiting, hypothermia and hematuria can be observed. Fortunately, with aggressive treatment and appropriate supportive care, most animals are able to recover completely. Owners should be advised not to administer acetaminophen in cats. Considering the large number of cats treated in emergency veterinary with clinical signs of acetaminophen toxicity, we have the objective of presenting information about this disease for clinicians of small animals to identify the framework and thus treat it successfully.

Regeneration rate after fission in the fissiparous sea star Allostichaster capensis (Asteroidea)

Many studies have focused on the regeneration rate of arms in Asteroidea but no studies have focused on the regeneration rate after fission. Allostichaster capensis is a fissiparous sea star with a wide range of dis- tribution. In Golfo Nuevo (42°46’49’’ S - 64°59’ 26’’ W) sea stars undergo fission every spring and summer and regenerate the rest of the year. To analyze the regeneration rate, we conducted an experiment with sea stars collected just before fission. After sea stars underwent fission, the length of the three non-regenerating and the three regenerating arms were measured weekly. The arm length (regenerating and non-regenerating) was used in non-Linear Mixed Effect models in order to account for within-individual correlation in different models. The regenerating arms regenerate according to a Quadratic model, while the non-regenerating arms regenerate according to a linear model. In the regenerating arms, the regeneration rate was estimated to be 0.1 mm.week -1 and in the non-regenerating arms, the growth rate was 0.004 mm.week -1 . Sea stars regenerate ca. 20 % of the arm in one month, and it takes about 5 months to be completely regenerated. At the beginning, the regeneration rate is fast generating the growth of the arms, once the pyloric caeca and gonads are present inside the arms the regeneration rate slows down probably due to allocation to gametes and pyloric caeca and arms. The factors that regulate the regeneration rate are unknown. However, food availability and energy storage seem to play an important role. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (Suppl. 2): 321-328. Quasisymmetric Schur functions and modules of the 0-Hecke algebra

Abstract We define a 0-Hecke action on composition tableaux, and then use it to derive 0-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristic is a quasisymmetric Schur function. We then relate the modules to the weak Bruhat order and use them to derive a new basis for quasisymmetric functions. We also classify those modules that are tableau-cyclic and likewise indecomposable. Finally, we develop a restriction rule that reflects the coproduct of quasisymmetric Schur functions.

Type I interferons in tuberculosis: Foe and occasionally friend

    Get PDF
Tuberculosis remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide, and, despite its clinical significance, there are still significant gaps in our understanding of pathogenic and protective mechanisms triggered by Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Type I interferons (IFN) regulate a broad family of genes that either stimulate or inhibit immune function, having both host-protective and detrimental effects, and exhibit well-characterized antiviral activity. Transcriptional studies have uncovered a potential deleterious role for type I IFN in active tuberculosis. Since then, additional studies in human tuberculosis and experimental mouse models of M. tuberculosis infection support the concept that type I IFN promotes both bacterial expansion and disease pathogenesis. More recently, studies in a different setting have suggested a putative protective role for type I IFN. In this study, we discuss the mechanistic and contextual factors that determine the detrimental versus beneficial outcomes of type I IFN induction during M. tuberculosis infection, from human disease to experimental mouse models of tuberculosis

Spring Migration of Eiders and Other Waterbirds at Point Barrow, Alaska

Birds migrating along the flaw lead at Point Barrow, Alaska were observed from 6 May to 4 June 1976. Little migration occurred until 25 and 26 May, when winds shifted from northeasterly to southwesterly and widened the lead. King Eiders (Somateria spectabilis) were the most abundant migrant; their movements were greatest with southwesterly (following) winds and between 1200 and 1800 h (Alaska Daylight Savings Time). On 26 May 360,000 King Eiders passed within a 10-hour period. Ninety percent of the migrant Glaucous Gulls (Larus hyperboreus) moved east by 25 May. Common Eiders (Somateria mollissima) and Oldsquaw (Clangula hyemalis) were most abundant in early June and the bulk of their migration probably occurred after 4 June. Male King Eiders passed mostly in May while females were more common in June, suggesting that this species delays pair bonding until the latter part of their migration. This strategy necessitates an early migration and introduces the risk of possible starvation due to late spring freezing in the high Arctic.Key words: waterbirds, eiders, King Eiders, Somateria spectabilis; Glaucuous Gulls, Larus hyperboreus; Common Eiders, Somateria mollissima; Oldsquaw, Clangula hyemalis; migrationMots clés: oiseaux marins, eiders, eiders respectable, Somateria spectabilis; goéland bourgmestre, Larus hyperboreus; eider commun, Somateria mollisima; canard à longue queue, Clangula hyemalis; migratio
