γ-Ray and Parsec-scale Jet Properties of a Complete Sample of Blazars From the Mojave Program
We investigate the Fermi Large Area Telescope γ-ray and 15 GHz Very Long Baseline Array radio properties of a joint γ-ray and radio-selected sample of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) obtained during the first 11 months of the Fermi mission (2008 August 4-2009 July 5). Our sample contains the brightest 173 AGNs in these bands above declination –30° during this period, and thus probes the full range of γ-ray loudness (γ-ray to radio band luminosity ratio) in the bright blazar population. The latter quantity spans at least 4 orders of magnitude, reflecting a wide range of spectral energy distribution (SED) parameters in the bright blazar population. The BL Lac objects, however, display a linear correlation of increasing γ-ray loudness with synchrotron SED peak frequency, suggesting a universal SED shape for objects of this class. The synchrotron self-Compton model is favored for the γ-ray emission in these BL Lac objects over external seed photon models, since the latter predict a dependence of Compton dominance on Doppler factor that would destroy any observed synchrotron SED-peak-γ-ray-loudness correlation. The high-synchrotron peaked (HSP) BL Lac objects are distinguished by lower than average radio core brightness temperatures, and none display large radio modulation indices or high linear core polarization levels. No equivalent trends are seen for the flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) in our sample. Given the association of such properties with relativistic beaming, we suggest that the HSP BL Lac objects have generally lower Doppler factors than the lower-synchrotron peaked BL Lac objects or FSRQs in our sample
A Qualitative Exploration of Self-Perceived Problematic Pornography Use Amongst Young People
Pornography use is prevalent amongst young people, with technology developments meaning that it is now available like it has never been available before. Research to date has indicated that for a minority of users that this may be problematic for them. However, there had been no research interviewing those who experience this difficulty. This thesis explores the experience of young people with self-perceived problematic pornography use.
Semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine 16–24-year-olds with self-perceived problematic pornography use. The data was analysed from a social constructionist paradigm following Braun and Clarke (2022) reflexive thematic analysis. There were seven themes constructed which are: 1. What is problematic use? Too much or too extreme?, 2. Using porn as a coping strategy, 3. The shame/guilt associated with pornography use, 4. The negative effect of problematic pornography use on relationships, 5. Things can get better, 6. People minimising the problem, and 7. A lacking in education.
The experience of self-perceived problematic pornography use is not a stand-alone issue. It is important when working with people who present with this experience that counselling psychologists hold this in mind, understanding this is not just an individual problem but also a relational one, and that understanding what the client exactly means about the problem is key to supporting them.
This thesis has a very broad scope, and the participants were not a homogenous group aside from age and self-perceived problematic pornography use and the research questions were very open. It could be useful for future research to either look into particular identity groups, or to broaden the research more to people of all ages. It could also be interesting to do quantitative research to investigate whether there is a relationship between pornography use and beliefs about sexual education
Multi-wavelength Observations of Blazar AO 0235+164 in the 2008-2009 Flaring State
The blazar AO 0235+164 (z = 0.94) has been one of the most active objects observed by Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) since its launch in Summer 2008. In addition to the continuous coverage by Fermi, contemporaneous observations were carried out from the radio to γ-ray bands between 2008 September and 2009 February. In this paper, we summarize the rich multi-wavelength data collected during the campaign (including F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, Kanata, OVRO, RXTE, SMARTS, Swift, and other instruments), examine the cross-correlation between the light curves measured in the different energy bands, and interpret the resulting spectral energy distributions in the context of well-known blazar emission models. We find that the γ-ray activity is well correlated with a series of near-IR/optical flares, accompanied by an increase in the optical polarization degree. On the other hand, the X-ray light curve shows a distinct 20 day high state of unusually soft spectrum, which does not match the extrapolation of the optical/UV synchrotron spectrum. We tentatively interpret this feature as the bulk Compton emission by cold electrons contained in the jet, which requires an accretion disk corona with an effective covering factor of 19% at a distance of 100 R_g. We model the broadband spectra with a leptonic model with external radiation dominated by the infrared emission from the dusty torus

A projection method for statics and dynamics of lattice spin systems
A method based on Monte Carlo sampling of the probability flows projected
onto the subspace of one or more slow variables is proposed for investigation
of dynamic and static properties of lattice spin systems. We illustrate the
method by applying it, with projection onto the order-parameter subspace, to
the three-dimensional 3-state Potts model in equilibrium and to metastable
decay in a three-dimensional 3-state kinetic Potts model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTex, final version to appear in Phys. Rev.

A 100 micro Kelvin bolometer system for SIRTF
Progress toward a prototype of 100 mK bolometric detection system for the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) is described. Two adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators (ADR's) were constructed and used to investigate the capabilities necessary for orbital operation. The first, a laboratory ADR, demonstrated a hold time at 0.1 K of over 12 hours, with temperature stability approx. 3 micro-K RMS achieved by controlling the magnetic field. A durable salt pill and an efficient support system have been demonstrated. A second ADR, the SIRTF flight prototype, has been built and will be flown on a balloon. Techniques for magnetic shielding, low heat leak current leads, and a mechanical heat switch are being developed in this ADR. Plans for construction of 100 mK bolometers are discussed. Three important cosmological investigations which will be carried out by these longest wavelength SIRTF detectors are described
RSRM-11 (36OW011) ballistics mass properties (STS-35)
The propulsion performance and reconstructed mass properties data from Thiolol's RSRM-11 motors which were assigned to the STS-35 launch are contained. The Thiokol manufacturing designations for the motors were 360W011A/360W011B, which are referred to as RSRM-11A and RSRM-B, respectively. The launch of STS-35 occurred on 2 December 1990 at the Eastern Test Range (ETR). The data contained herein was input to the STS-35 Flight Evaluation Report. The SRM propellant, TP-H1148, is a composite type solid propellants, formulated of polybutediene acrylic acid, acryonitrile terpolymer binder, epoxy curing agent, ammonium perchlorate oxidizer, and aluminum powder fuel. A small amount of burning rate catalyst (iron oxide) was added to achieve the desired propellant burn rate. The propellant evaluation and raw material information for the RSRM-11 are included. The ballistic performance presented was based on the Operational Flight Instrumentation (OFI) 12.5 sample per second pressure data for the steady state and tail off portion of the pressure trace. Recent studies have shown that the transducers are affected by the measuring system at KSC and temperature gradients created by the igniter heaters. Therefore, an adjustment to the data from each transducer is made to make the initial reading match the atmospheric pressure at the time of launch
On the edge of a new frontier: Is gerontological social work in the UK ready to meet twenty-first-century challenges?
This article is available open access through the publisher’s website. Copyright @ 2013 The Authors. This article explores the readiness of gerontological social work in the UK for meeting the challenges of an ageing society by investigating the focus on work with older people in social work education and the scope of gerontological social work research. The discussion draws on findings from two exploratory studies: a survey of qualifying master's programmes in England and a survey of the content relating to older people over a six-year period in four leading UK social work journals. The evidence from master's programmes suggests widespread neglect of ageing in teaching content and practice learning. Social work journals present a more nuanced picture. Older people emerge within coverage of generic policy issues for adults, such as personalisation and safeguarding, and there is good evidence of the complexity of need in late life. However, there is little attention to effective social work interventions, with an increasingly diverse older population, or to the quality of gerontological social work education. The case is made for infusing content on older people throughout the social work curriculum, for extending practice learning opportunities in social work with older people and for increasing the volume and reporting of gerontological social work research.Brunel Institute for Ageing Studie
Magnetization switching in nanoscale ferromagnetic grains: simulations with heterogeneous nucleation
We present results obtained with various types of heterogeneous nucleation in
a kinetic Ising model of magnetization switching in single-domain ferromagnetic
nanoparticles. We investigate the effect of the presence of the system boundary
and make comparison with simulations on periodic lattices. We also study
systems with bulk disorder and compare how two different types of disorder
influence the switching behavior.Comment: 3 pages, 4 Postscript figure
