The Rise of Aggressive Abolitionism: Addresses to the Slaves
Abolitionist heraldry Speeches to the enslaved Stanley Harrold\u27s new book provides full texts of three abolitionist speeches that bear the distinction of having been addressedâat least as far as their titles goâto slaves: Gerrit Smith\u27s Address of the Anti-Slavery Convention of t...
Sir Robert Thompsonâs Better War: The British Advisory Mission and the South Vietnamese Strategic Hamlet Program, 1961-1963
This thesis examines the interactions between the British Advisory Mission to South Vietnam (BRIAM) and the South Vietnamese government of Ngo Dinh Diem and his American advisors. By studying BRIAMâs effortsâand those of its leader, Sir Robert Thompsonâthis thesis argues that many of the tactics Thompson advocated and Diem executed, especially the Strategic Hamlet Program, foreshadowed the techniques Americans used several years later under General Creighton Abrams, during the period historian Lewis Sorley termed the âbetter war.â
Sorley argued that the American strategy in the Vietnam War was flawed until Abrams implemented his âone warâ plan. With this interpretation, however, he ignored the earlier attempts by BRIAM, Diem, and many of the American advisors to win the war using South Vietnamese forces. Long before the introduction of US combat units into the conflict, the efforts of BRIAM and American advisors to work through the government of South Vietnam mirrored President Richard Nixon and Abramsâs later Vietnamization policy.
Drawing from the files of the Foreign Relations of the United States, military documents located in the US National Archives, and BRIAMâs records in the British National Archives, this thesis maintains that Abramsâs âone warâ plan was not a unique, âbetter warâ approach. Thompson and Diem pursued a similar strategy in the early 1960s, and it was Diemâs death in the American-backed coup of November 1963 that ended these original efforts at waging a better war in South Vietnam
The Properties of refractories in zinc metallurgy. Part III. Comparison of various clays
This thesis...contains a description of a part of a general investigation on the subject of the refractories used in the distillation of zinc. This investigation has been in progress for the past eighteen months at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, Department of Commerce, in cooperation with the School of Mines and Metallurgy of the University of Missouri. The first phase of this investigation had for its theme the determination of the properties of the fire clays and body mixtures now used in the manufacture of zinc retorts. The second phase deals with the comparative value of various grog materials presenting possibilities of use in the manufacture of zinc retorts. The purpose of the third phase of the investigation is the comparison of the properties of bodies made from various clays which present possibilities of utilization for the manufacture of retorts for the distillation of zinc --Introduction, page [1]
An investigation of data compression techniques for hyperspectral core imager data
We investigate algorithms for tractable analysis of real hyperspectral image data from core samples provided by AngloGold Ashanti. In particular, we investigate feature extraction, non-linear dimension reduction using diffusion maps and wavelet approximation methods on our data
A fluke encounter: first record of the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) within the central North Sea, United Kingdom
Despite holding the accolade as the largest animal ever to live on planet earth and ubiquitously inhabiting the world's major oceans, an acute paucity of information surrounds the geographical distribution and migration phenology of the endangered blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) in the northeast Atlantic. Current migration and distribution information derived from robust scientific studies is required to ensure the formulation and implementation of successful conservation measures with a vision to support the ongoing recovery of the northeast Atlantic population. At 10:21 (UTC) on the 9th of November 2020, two blue whales were observed at position 55°13.99â˛N, 01°13.62â˛W, 18 km off the coast of the UK in the central North Sea just north of Newcastle at a water depth of 76 m. This is the first paper that has confirmed an account of live blue whales frequenting shallow waters of the central North Sea and represents a new area of occurrence within the accepted range of the northeast Atlantic population, an area in which sightings are extremely rare and may provide insight into the intricacies of migration routes and behaviour.publishedVersio
Determination of control-surface characteristics from NACA plain-flap and tab data
The data from previous NACA pressure-distribution investigations of plain flaps and tabs have been analyzed and are presented in this paper in a form readily applicable to the problems of control-surface design. The experimentally determined variation of aerodynamic parameters with flap chord and tab chord are given in chart form and comparisons are made with the theory. With the aid of these charts and the theoretical relationships for a thin airfoil, the aerodynamic characteristics for control surfaces of any plan form with plain flaps and tabs may be determined. A discussion of the basic equations of the thin-airfoil theory and the development of a number of additional equations that will be helpful in tail design are presented in the appendixes. The procedure for applying the data is described and a sample problem of tail design is included. The data presented and the method of application set forth in this report should provide a reasonably accurate and satisfactory means of computing the aerodynamic characteristics of control surfaces
