Dark and Baryonic Matter in Bright Spiral Galaxies: I.Near-infrared and Optical Broadband Surface Photometry of 30 Galaxies
We present photometrically calibrated images and surface photometry in the B,
V, R, J, H, and K-bands of 25, and in the g, r, and K-bands of 5 nearby bright
(Bo_T<12.5 mag) spiral galaxies with inclinations between 30-65 degrees
spanning the Hubble Sequence from Sa to Scd. Data are from The Ohio State
University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey, the Two Micron All Sky Survey, and the
Sloan Digital Sky Survey Second Data Release. Radial surface brightness
profiles are extracted, and integrated magnitudes are measured from the
profiles. Axis ratios, position angles, and scale lengths are measured from the
near-infrared images. A 1-dimensional bulge/disk decomposition is performed on
the near-infrared images of galaxies with a non-negligible bulge component, and
an exponential disk is fit to the radial surface brightness profiles of the
remaining galaxies.Comment: 28 page
Star Clusters in the Nearby Late-Type Galaxy NGC 1311
Ultraviolet, optical and near infrared images of the nearby (D ~ 5.5 Mpc) SBm
galaxy NGC 1311, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, reveal a small
population of 13 candidate star clusters. We identify candidate star clusters
based on a combination of their luminosity, extent and spectral energy
distribution. The masses of the cluster candidates range from ~1000 up to
~100000 Solar masses, and show a strong positive trend of larger mass with
increasing with cluster age. Such a trend follows from the fading and
dissolution of old, low-mass clusters, and the lack of any young super star
clusters of the sort often formed in strong starbursts. The cluster age
distribution is consistent with a bursting mode of cluster formation, with
active episodes of age ~10 Myr, ~100 Myr and ~1 Gyr. The ranges of age and mass
we probe are consistent with those of the star clusters found in quiescent

Drop impact upon micro- and nanostructured superhydrophobic surfaces
We experimentally investigate drop impact dynamics onto different
superhydrophobic surfaces, consisting of regular polymeric micropatterns and
rough carbon nanofibers, with similar static contact angles. The main control
parameters are the Weber number \We and the roughness of the surface. At small
\We, i.e. small impact velocity, the impact evolutions are similar for both
types of substrates, exhibiting Fakir state, complete bouncing, partial
rebouncing, trapping of an air bubble, jetting, and sticky vibrating water
balls. At large \We, splashing impacts emerge forming several satellite
droplets, which are more pronounced for the multiscale rough carbon nanofiber
jungles. The results imply that the multiscale surface roughness at nanoscale
plays a minor role in the impact events for small \We \apprle 120 but an
important one for large \We \apprge 120. Finally, we find the effect of
ambient air pressure to be negligible in the explored parameter regime \We

Among B cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, MALT lymphomas express a unique antibody repertoire with frequent rheumatoid factor reactivity
We analyzed the structure of antigen receptors of a comprehensive panel of mature B non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (B-NHLs) by comparing, at the amino acid level, their immunoglobulin (Ig)VH-CDR3s with CDR3 sequences present in GenBank. Follicular lymphomas, diffuse large B cell lymphomas, Burkitt's lymphomas, and myelomas expressed a CDR3 repertoire comparable to that of normal B cells. Mantle cell lymphomas and B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemias (B-CLLs) expressed clearly restricted albeit different CDR3 repertoires. Lymphomas of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues (MALTs) were unique as 8 out of 45 (18%) of gastric- and 13 out of 32 (41%) of salivary gland-MALT lymphomas expressed B cell antigen receptors with strong CDR3 homology to rheumatoid factors (RFs). Of note, the RF-CDR3 homology without exception included N-region–encoded residues in the hypermutated IgVH genes, indicating that they were stringently selected for reactivity with auto-IgG. By in vitro binding studies with 10 MALT lymphoma–derived antibodies, we showed that seven of these cases, of which four with RF-CDR3 homology, indeed possessed strong RF reactivity. Of one MALT lymphoma, functional proof for selection of subclones with high RF affinity was obtained. Interestingly, RF-CDR3 homology and t(11;18) appeared to be mutually exclusive features and RF-CDR3 homology was not encountered in any of the 19 pulmonary MALT lymphomas studied
Inter-observer and inter-examination variability of manual vertebral bone attenuation measurements on computed tomography
Objective: To determine inter-observer and inter-examination variability of manual attenuation measurements of the vertebrae in low-dose unenhanced chest computed tomography (CT).
Methods: Three hundred and sixty-seven lung cancer screening trial participants who underwent baseline and repeat unenhanced low-dose CT after 3 months because of an indeterminate lung nodule were included. The CT attenuation value of the first lumbar vertebrae (L1) was measured in all CTs by one observer to obtain inter-examination reliability. Six observers performed measurements in 100 randomly selected CTs to determine agreement with limits of agreement and Bland-Altman plots and reliability with intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Reclassification analyses were performed using a threshold of 110 HU to define osteoporosis.
Results: Inter-examination reliability was excellent with an ICC of 0.92 (p < 0.001). Inter-examination limits of agreement ranged from -26 to 28 HU with a mean difference of 1 ± 14 HU. Inter-observer reliability ICCs ranged from 0.70 to 0.91. Inter-examination variability led to 11.2 % reclassification of participants and inter-observer variability led to 22.1 % reclassification.
Conclusions: Vertebral attenuation values can be manually quantified with good to excellent inter-examination and inter-observer reliability on unenhanced low-dose chest CT. This information is valuable for early detection of osteoporosis on low-dose chest CT. Influence of tumour size on the efficacy of targeted alpha therapy with 213Bi-[DOTA0,Tyr3]-octreotate
BACKGROUND: Targeted alpha therapy has been postulated to have great potential for the treatment of small clusters of tumour cells as well as small metastases. (213)Bismuth, an α-emitter with a half-life of 46 min, has shown to be effective in preclinical as well as in clinical applications. In this study, we evaluated whether (213)Bi-[DOTA(0), Tyr(3)]-octreotate ((213)Bi-DOTATATE), a (213)Bi-labelled somatostatin analogue with high affinity for somatostatin receptor subtype 2 (SSTR(2)), is suitable for the treatment of larger neuroendocrine tumours overexpressing SSTR(2) in comparison to its effectiveness for smaller tumours. We performed a preclinical targeted radionuclide therapy study with (213)Bi-DOTATATE in animals bearing tumours of different sizes (50 and 200 mm(3)) using two tumour models: H69 (human small cell lung carcinoma) and CA20948 (rat pancreatic tumour). METHODS: Pharmacokinetics was determined for calculation of dosimetry in organs and tumours. H69- or CA20948-xenografted mice with tumour volumes of approximately 120 mm(3) were euthanized at 10, 30, 60 and 120 min post injection of a single dose of (213)Bi-DOTATATE (1.5–4.8 MBq). To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of (213)Bi-DOTATATE, xenografted H69 and CA20948 tumour-bearing mice with tumour sizes of 50 and 200 mm(3) were administered daily with a therapeutic dose of (213)Bi-DOTATATE (0.3 nmol, 2–4 MBq) for three consecutive days. The animals were followed for 90 days after treatment. At day 90, mice were injected with 25 MBq (99m)Tc-DMSA and imaged by SPECT/CT to investigate possible renal dysfunction due to (213)Bi-DOTATATE treatment. RESULTS: Higher tumour uptakes were found in CA20948 tumour-bearing animals compared to those in H69 tumour-bearing mice with the highest tumour uptake of 19.6 ± 6.6 %IA/g in CA20948 tumour-bearing animals, while for H69 tumour-bearing mice, the highest tumour uptake was found to be 9.8 ± 2.4 %IA/g. Nevertheless, as the anti-tumour effect was more pronounced in H69 tumour-bearing mice, the survival rate was higher. Furthermore, in the small tumour groups, no regrowth of tumour was found in two H69 tumour-bearing mice and in one of the CA20948 tumour-bearing mice. No renal dysfunction was observed in (213)Bi-DOTATATE-treated mice after the doses were applied. CONCLUSIONS: (213)Bi-DOTATATE demonstrated a great therapeutic effect in both small and larger tumour lesions. Higher probability for stable disease was found in animals with small tumours. (213)Bi-DOTATATE was effective in different neuroendocrine (H69 and CA20948) tumour models with overexpression of SSTR(2) in mice. Automated coronary artery calcification scoring in non-gated chest CT: Agreement and reliability
Objective: To determine the agreement and reliability of fully automated coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring in a lung cancer screening population. Materials and Methods: 1793 low-dose chest CT scans were analyzed (non-contrast-enhanced, non-gated). To establish the reference standard for CAC, first automated calcium scoring was performed using a preliminary version of a method employing coronary calcium atlas and machine learning approach. Thereafter, each scan was inspected by one of four trained raters. When needed, the raters corrected initially automaticity-identified results. In addition, an independent observer subsequently inspected manually corrected results and discarded scans with gross segmentation errors. Subsequently, fully automatic coronary calcium scoring was performed. Agatston score, CAC volume and number of calcifications were computed. Agreement was determined by calculating proportion of agreement and examining Bland-Altman plots. Reliability was determined by calculating linearly weighted kappa (κ) for Agatston strata and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) for continuous values. Results: 44 (2.5%) scans were excluded due to metal artifacts or gross segmentation errors. In the remaining 1749 scans, median Agatston score was 39.6 (P25-P75:0-345.9), median volume score was 60.4 mm3 (P25-P75:0-361.4) and median number of calcifications was 2 (P25-P75:0-4) for the automated scores. The k demonstrated very good reliability (0.85) for Agatston risk categories between the automated and reference scores. The Bland-Altman plots showed underestimation of calcium score values by automated quantification. Median difference was 2.5 (p25-p75:0.0-53.2) for Agatston score, 7.6 (p25-p75:0.0-94.4) for CAC volume and 1 (p25-p75:0-5) for number of calcifications. UV-Optical Pixel Maps of Face-On Spiral Galaxies -- Clues for Dynamics and Star Formation Histories
UV and optical images of the face-on spiral galaxies NGC 6753 and NGC 6782
reveal regions of strong on-going star formation that are associated with
structures traced by the old stellar populations. We make NUV--(NUV-I) pixel
color-magnitude diagrams (pCMDs) that reveal plumes of pixels with strongly
varying NUV surface brightness and nearly constant I surface brightness. The
plumes correspond to sharply bounded radial ranges, with (NUV-I) at a given NUV
surface brightness being bluer at larger radii. The plumes are parallel to the
reddening vector and simple model mixtures of young and old populations, thus
neither reddening nor the fraction of the young population can produce the
observed separation between the plumes. The images, radial surface-brightness,
and color plots indicate that the separate plumes are caused by sharp declines
in the surface densities of the old populations at radii corresponding to disk
resonances. The maximum surface brightness of the NUV light remains nearly
constant with radius, while the maximum I surface brightness declines sharply
with radius. An MUV image of NGC 6782 shows emission from the nuclear ring. The
distribution of points in an (MUV-NUV) vs. (NUV-I) pixel color-color diagram is
broadly consistent with the simple mixture model, but shows a residual trend
that the bluest pixels in (MUV-NUV) are the reddest pixels in (NUV-I). This may
be due to a combination of red continuum from late-type supergiants and [SIII]
emission lines associated with HII regions in active star-forming regions. We
have shown that pixel mapping is a powerful tool for studying the distribution
and strength of on-going star formation in galaxies. Deep, multi-color imaging
can extend this to studies of extinction, and the ages and metallicities of

Morphology and kinematics of the ionised gas in early-type galaxies
We present results of our ongoing study of the morphology and kinematics of
the ionised gas in 48 representative nearby elliptical and lenticular galaxies
using the SAURON integral-field spectrograph on the 4.2m William Herschel
Telescope. Making use of a recently developed technique, emission is detected
in 75% of the galaxies. The ionised-gas distributions display varied
morphologies, ranging from regular gas disks to filamentary structures.
Additionally, the emission-line kinematic maps show, in general, regular
motions with smooth variations in kinematic position angle. In most of the
galaxies, the ionised-gas kinematics is decoupled from the stellar counterpart,
but only some of them present signatures of recent accretion of gaseous
material. The presence of dust is very common in our sample and is usually
accompanied by gas emission. Our analysis of the [OIII]/Hbeta emission-line
ratios, both across the whole sample as well as within the individual galaxies,
suggests that there is no unique mechanism triggering the ionisation of the
