    Exponential martingales and changes of measure for counting processes

    We give sufficient criteria for the Dol\'eans-Dade exponential of a stochastic integral with respect to a counting process local martingale to be a true martingale. The criteria are adapted particularly to the case of counting processes and are sufficiently weak to be useful and verifiable, as we illustrate by several examples. In particular, the criteria allow for the construction of for example nonexplosive Hawkes processes as well as counting processes with stochastic intensities depending on diffusion processes

    Innate secretory antibodies protect against natural Salmonella typhimurium infection

    The production of IgA is induced in an antigen-unspecific manner by commensal flora. These secretory antibodies (SAbs) may bind multiple antigens and are thought to eliminate commensal bacteria and self-antigens to avoid systemic recognition. In this study, we addressed the role of “innate” SAbs, i.e., those that are continuously produced in normal individuals, in protection against infection of the gastrointestinal tract. We used polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR−/−) knock-out mice, which are unable to bind and actively transport dimeric IgA and pentameric IgM to the mucosae, and examined the role of innate SAbs in protection against the invasive pathogen Salmonella typhimurium. In vitro experiments suggested that innate IgA in pIgR−/− serum bound S. typhimurium in a cross-reactive manner which inhibited epithelial cell invasion. Using a “natural” infection model, we demonstrated that pIgR−/− mice are profoundly sensitive to infection with S. typhimurium via the fecal-oral route and, moreover, shed more bacteria that readily infected other animals. These results imply an important evolutionary role for innate SAbs in protecting both the individual and the herd against infections, and suggest that the major role of SAbs may be to prevent the spread of microbial pathogens throughout the population, rather than protection of local mucosal surfaces

    Extraction of the πNN\pi NN coupling constant from NN scattering data

    We reexamine Chew's method for extracting the πNN\pi NN coupling constant from np differential cross section measurements. Values for this coupling are extracted below 350 MeV, in the potential model region, and up to 1 GeV. The analyses to 1~GeV have utilized 55 data sets. We compare these results to those obtained via χ2\chi^2 mapping techniques. We find that these two methods give consistent results which are in agreement with previous Nijmegen determinations.Comment: 12 pages of text plus 2 figures.     MinION Analysis and Reference Consortium: Phase 1 data release and analysis

    The advent of a miniaturized DNA sequencing device with a high-throughput contextual sequencing capability embodies the next generation of large scale sequencing tools. The MinION™ Access Programme (MAP) was initiated by Oxford Nanopore Technologies™ in April 2014, giving public access to their USB-attached miniature sequencing device. The MinION Analysis and Reference Consortium (MARC) was formed by a subset of MAP participants, with the aim of evaluating and providing standard protocols and reference data to the community. Envisaged as a multi-phased project, this study provides the global community with the Phase 1 data from MARC, where the reproducibility of the performance of the MinION was evaluated at multiple sites. Five laboratories on two continents generated data using a control strain of Escherichia coli K-12, preparing and sequencing samples according to a revised ONT protocol. Here, we provide the details of the protocol used, along with a preliminary analysis of the characteristics of typical runs including the consistency, rate, volume and quality of data produced. Further analysis of the Phase 1 data presented here, and additional experiments in Phase 2 of E. coli from MARC are already underway to identify ways to improve and enhance MinION performance

    Localization for Yang-Mills Theory on the Fuzzy Sphere

    We present a new model for Yang-Mills theory on the fuzzy sphere in which the configuration space of gauge fields is given by a coadjoint orbit. In the classical limit it reduces to ordinary Yang-Mills theory on the sphere. We find all classical solutions of the gauge theory and use nonabelian localization techniques to write the partition function entirely as a sum over local contributions from critical points of the action, which are evaluated explicitly. The partition function of ordinary Yang-Mills theory on the sphere is recovered in the classical limit as a sum over instantons. We also apply abelian localization techniques and the geometry of symmetric spaces to derive an explicit combinatorial expression for the partition function, and compare the two approaches. These extend the standard techniques for solving gauge theory on the sphere to the fuzzy case in a rigorous framework.Comment: 55 pages.     An updated analysis of NN elastic scattering data to 1.6 GeV

    An energy-dependent and set of single-energy partial-wave analyses of NNNN elastic scattering data have been completed. The fit to 1.6~GeV has been supplemented with a low-energy analysis to 400 MeV. Using the low-energy fit, we study the sensitivity of our analysis to the choice of πNN\pi NN coupling constant. We also comment on the possibility of fitting npnp data alone. These results are compared with those found in the recent Nijmegen analyses.     Temporal shifts in prokaryotic metabolism in response to organic carbon dynamics in the mesopelagic ocean during an export event in the Southern ocean

    As the major term in downward organic carbon flux attenuation, determining prokaryotic metabolism over depth in the mesopelagic ocean is crucial for constraining the efficiency of the gravitational biological carbon pump (BCP). We hypothesize that the enhancement of particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations in the mesopelagic twilight zone during export events leads to a temporally dynamic prokaryotic metabolic response, which likely has consequences for the efficiency of the BCP. We tested this hypothesis by making repeated measurements of leucine assimilation and leucine respiration at in situ concentrations over six depths throughout the upper 500 m of the water column during the collapse of a large-scale Southern Ocean spring diatom bloom. Rates of prokaryotic leucine assimilation were used to indicate levels of prokaryotic heterotrophic production, and leucine assimilation efficiency (LAE; the proportion of leucine used for growth versus respiration) was taken as an indicator of prokaryotic growth efficiency. Thus, relative shifts in LAE are indicative of shifts in rates of prokaryotic production relative to respiration. The flux of POC through the oceans’ interior led to a dynamic prokaryotic response, characterized by a temporary elevation in mesopelagic prokaryote leucine assimilation rates, LAE and prokaryotic abundance. By the final measurement these changes had already begun to revert, despite POC concentrations still being enriched. As hypothesized, our data revealed distinctions in the phases of the mesopelagic system, likely due to an evolution in bulk prokaryotic metabolic status and the amount and composition of organic matter available. This indicates that estimating ocean carbon sequestration during export events necessitates a time course of measurements throughout the period of POC downward flux. Our findings also revealed distinctions in the ecophysiological prokaryotic responses to substrate regimes between the surface mixed layer and the mesopelagic. Specifically, in the latter in situ leucine concentrations appeared more significant in controlling prokaryote metabolism than POC concentration, and were more closely related to per cell leucine assimilation, than respiration. Whereas, in the mixed layer, the concentration of in situ leucine did not seem to drive rates of its assimilation, rather POC concentration was a strong negative driver of cell specific leucine respiration. These findings are suggestive of stronger levels of energy limitation in the deeper ocean. We surmised that ocean regions with sporadic substrate supply to the mesopelagic are likely to experience stronger energy limitation which favors prokaryotic respiration over production
