    Surface enhancement of oxygen exchange and diffusion in the ionic conductor La2Mo2O9

    Isotopic surface oxygen exchange and its subsequent diffusion have been measured using secondary ion mass spectrometry in the fast ionic conductor La2Mo2O9. A silver coating was applied to the sample surface to enhance the surface exchange process for dry oxygen. Contrary to previous studies performed using a wet atmosphere, no grain boundary diffusion tail was observed under these optimized dry exchange conditions. The activation energy for oxygen diffusion was found to be 0.66(+/- 0.09) eV at high temperature (>570 degrees C), and 1.25(+/- 0.01)eV at low temperature (<570 degrees C). Time-of-Flight secondary ion mass spectrometry was employed to investigate the correlation between the silver coating and the O-18 concentration on the sample surface.     Transport mechanisms during the high-temperature oxidation of ternary γ/γ′ Co-base model alloys

    Over a decade ago, γ′-strengthened Co-base alloys were introduced as potential replacement for conventional Ni-base Superalloys. Insufficient resistance against high-temperature oxidation restricts the number of possible applications. The present study contributes to the understanding of elementary mechanisms such as material transport during extensive oxide scale formation on γ/γ′ Co-base alloys to explain their inferior oxidation behaviour. A clear dependency of the scale growth kinetics on W content and oxidation temperature is demonstrated by thermogravimetry and subsequent analysis of cross-sections. By means of electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), the evolution of microstructures in the outer oxide layers were examined depending on the oxidation temperature. Sequential exposure of samples in 16O2- and 18O2-containing atmospheres proved counter-current material transport. The combination of focused ion beam (FIB) and secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) visualised the formation of new oxide phases mainly on the outer and inner interface of the oxide scale. An elaborate review of available transport paths for oxygen is given during the discussion of results. All experimental findings were combined to a coherent explanation of the inferior oxidation resistance of this relatively new class of high-temperature materials at temperatures above 800 °C

    From Analogical Proportion to Logical Proportions

    International audienceGiven a 4-tuple of Boolean variables (a, b, c, d), logical proportions are modeled by a pair of equivalences relating similarity indicators ( a∧b and a¯∧b¯), or dissimilarity indicators ( a∧b¯ and a¯∧b) pertaining to the pair (a, b), to the ones associated with the pair (c, d). There are 120 semantically distinct logical proportions. One of them models the analogical proportion which corresponds to a statement of the form “a is to b as c is to d”. The paper inventories the whole set of logical proportions by dividing it into five subfamilies according to what they express, and then identifies the proportions that satisfy noticeable properties such as full identity (the pair of equivalences defining the proportion hold as true for the 4-tuple (a, a, a, a)), symmetry (if the proportion holds for (a, b, c, d), it also holds for (c, d, a, b)), or code independency (if the proportion holds for (a, b, c, d), it also holds for their negations (a¯,b¯,c¯,d¯)). It appears that only four proportions (including analogical proportion) are homogeneous in the sense that they use only one type of indicator (either similarity or dissimilarity) in their definition. Due to their specific patterns, they have a particular cognitive appeal, and as such are studied in greater details. Finally, the paper provides a discussion of the other existing works on analogical proportions

    Truncating SRCAP variants outside the Floating-Harbor syndrome locus cause a distinct neurodevelopmental disorder with a specific DNA methylation signature

    Truncating variants in exons 33 and 34 of the SNF2-related CREBBP activator protein (SRCAP) gene cause the neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) Floating-Harbor syndrome (FLHS), characterized by short stature, speech delay, and facial dysmorphism. Here, we present a cohort of 33 individuals with clinical features distinct from FLHS and truncating (mostly de novo) SRCAP variants either proximal (n = 28) or distal (n = 5) to the FLHS locus. Detailed clinical characterization of the proximal SRCAP individuals identified shared characteristics: developmental delay with or without intellectual disability, behavioral and psychiatric problems, non-specific facial features, musculoskeletal issues, and hypotonia. Because FLHS is known to be associated with a unique set of DNA methylation (DNAm) changes in blood, a DNAm signature, we investigated whether there was a distinct signature associated with our affected individuals. A machine-learning model, based on the FLHS DNAm signature, negatively classified all our tested subjects. Comparing proximal variants with typically developing controls, we identified a DNAm signature distinct from the FLHS signature. Based on the DNAm and clinical data, we refer to the condition as "non-FLHS SRCAP-related NDD.'' All five distal variants classified negatively using the FLHS DNAm model while two classified positively using the proximal model. This suggests divergent pathogenicity of these variants, though clinically the distal group presented with NDD, similar to the proximal SRCAP group. In summary, for SRCAP, there is a clear relationship between variant location, DNAm profile, and clinical phenotype. These results highlight the power of combined epigenetic, molecular, and clinical studies to identify and characterize genotype-epigenotype-phenotype correlations

    Observational cohort study in older women with early breast cancer: Use of radiation therapy and impact on health-related quality of life and mortality

    Background Radiotherapy reduces in-breast recurrence risk in early breast cancer (EBC) in older women. This benefit may be small and should be balanced against treatment effect and holistic patient assessment. This study described treatment patterns according to fitness and impact on health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL). Methods A multicentre, observational study of EBC patients aged ≥ 70 years, undergoing breast-conserving surgery (BCS) or mastectomy, was undertaken. Associations between radiotherapy use, surgery, clinico-pathological parameters, fitness based on geriatric parameters and treatment centre were determined. HRQoL was measured using the European Organisation for the Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) questionnaires. Results In 2013–2018 2811 women in 56 UK study centres underwent surgery with a median follow-up of 52 months. On multivariable analysis, age and tumour risk predicted radiotherapy use. Among healthier patients (based on geriatric assessments) with high-risk tumours, 534/613 (87.1%) having BCS and 185/341 (54.2%) having mastectomy received radiotherapy. In less fit individuals with low-risk tumours undergoing BCS, 149/207 (72.0%) received radiotherapy. Radiotherapy effects on HRQoL domains, including breast symptoms and fatigue were seen, resolving by 18 months. Conclusion Radiotherapy use in EBC patients ≥ 70 years is affected by age and recurrence risk, whereas geriatric parameters have limited impact regardless of type of surgery. There was geographical variation in treatment, with some fit older women with high-risk tumours not receiving radiotherapy, and some older, low-risk, EBC patients receiving radiotherapy after BCS despite evidence of limited benefit.     A phonologically motivated input representation for the modelling of auditory word perception in continuous speech

    Representational choices are crucial to the success of connectionist modelling. Most previous models of auditory word perception in continuous speech have relied upon a traditional Chomsky-Halle style inventory of features; many have also postulated a localise phonemic level of representation mediating a featural and a lexical level. A different immediate representation of the speech input is proposed, motivated by current developments in phonological theory, namely Government Phonology. The proposed input representation consists of nine elements with physical correlates. A model of speech perception employing this input representation is described. Successive bundles of elements arrive across time at the input. Each is mapped, by means of recurrent connections, onto a window representing the current bundle and a context consisting of three such bundles either side of the current bundle. Simulations demonstrate the viability of the proposed input representation. A simulation of the compensation for coarticulation effect (Elman and McClelland. 1989) demonstrates an interpretation which does not involve top-down interaction between lexical and tower levels. The model described is envisaged as part of a wider model of language processing incorporating semantic and orthographic levels of representation, with no local lexical entries.

    Determination of lattice orientation in aluminium alloy grains by low energy gallium ion-channelling

    Polished sections of a fine-grained aluminium, silicon carbide metal matrix composite (MMC) alloy were prepared by sputtering using a low energy gallium ion source and column (FIB). The MMC had been processed by high temperature extrusion. Images of the polished surface were recorded using the ion-induced secondary electron emission. The metal matrix grains were distinguished by gallium ion-channelling contrast from the silicon carbide component. The variation of the contrast from the aluminium grains with tilt angle can be recorded and used to determine lattice orientation with the contrast from the silicon carbide (SIC) component as a reference. This method is rapid and suits site-specific investigations where classical methods of sample preparation fail. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved
