    New Records of Michigan Cicadidae (Homoptera), With Notes on the Use of Songs to Monitor Range Changes

    We present records of Diceroprocta vitripennis, Tibicen chloromera, and Tibicen pruinosa (new state record) in Michigan. Monitoring geographic range changes and population size differences by song suggests several population situations for cicadas: (1) sizable populations in most areas of apparently good habitat; (2) widely separated single individuals or small populations on the edges of populated regions, representing range extensions that may be of limited duration; (3) one or a few individuals present only once, probably transferred in soil on roots, and ultimately unsuccessful. Species- specific calling songs allow sensitive measurement of species\u27 range changes

    Strategic Opportunity: The workforce is ever-changing. Our latest challenge is finding workers who walk in with our needed skills and knowledge. This developed workforce is scarce and expensive. With the current workforce skills gaps increasing and rapidly changing job requirements, we need to think strategically and maximize all of our learning and development programs and dollars. This roundtable will discuss using tuition assistance and apprenticeships to create leadership development programs effectively and efficiently through partnerships. We will discuss the untapped opportunities within tuition assistance programs and how to align training and tuition assistance programs to build leadership pipelines about their personal experiences and are least likely to center on experiential learning. What we will explore: Rich will kick-off this roundtable with a five minute overview of IMSA’s vision statement is “by 2022, IMSA is a recognized global leader and catalyst in equity and excellence in STEM teaching and learning, innovation and entrepreneurship.” Followed by Michelle sharing a five-minute overview of Home Depot’s partnership with Bellevue University to create leadership pathways. This discussion of practical insights will dive into questions that look at Career Development from Talent Risk perspective like: Is the recent abandoning the four-year degree as a qualification a break from hiring orthodoxy or a short-term fad? As reported in the news recently, high-paying tech outlets like Apple, Google, and IBM, in addition to service-oriented companies like Costco, Starbucks, and Chipotle. Let’s explore why so many companies still insist upon a degree in the first place. How are assessments and frameworks for critical capabilities used to identify development needs?     Transcriptional profiling of colicin-induced cell death of Escherichia coli MG1655 identifies potential mechanisms by which bacteriocins promote bacterial diversity

    We report the transcriptional response of Escherichia coli MG1655 to damage induced by colicins E3 and E9, bacteriocins that kill cells through inactivation of the ribosome and degradation of chromosomal DNA, respectively. Colicin E9 strongly induced the LexA-regulated SOS response, while colicin E3 elicited a broad response that included the induction of cold shock genes, symptomatic of translational arrest. Colicin E3 also increased the transcription of cryptic prophage genes and other laterally acquired mobile elements. The transcriptional responses to both these toxins suggest mechanisms that may promote genetic diversity in E. coli populations, pointing to a more general role for colicins in adaptive bacterial physiology than has hitherto been realized

    VO2max changes in English futsal players after a 6-week period of specific small-sided games training

    Futsal is a high-intensity, intermittent sport where accelerations and short sprints are performed at maximal or sub-maximal intensity. These efforts are interspersed by brief recovery periods, during 2 halves of 20 minutes stopping clock. Aerobic endurance inevitably plays a key role in the players’ performance. The aim of this study was to analyse the VO2 max progression and the agility (with and without ball) of English futsal players during a 6-week period of small-sided games practice. Two teams volunteered to participate in this study; an experimental group (EG), which performed a specialised small-sided training regime and a control group (CG) (normal training regime). VO2max was estimated from the results of the 20-metre Multi-Stage Fitness Test. The VO2max of the futsal players in the EG improved significantly (58.73±2.41 ml/kg/min vs. 60.11 ± 2.99 ml/kg/min, p=0.04). The same player's agility and agility with ball performance did not report any significant changes in either group. The results showed that periodisation, training sessions and methods based on small-sided games, which implied a change in the number of players, the size of the pitch and the task constraints, were adequate to increase aerobic endurance
