Internet-based monitoring of influenza-like illness (ILI) in the general population of the Netherlands during the 2003–2004 influenza season
BACKGROUND: An internet-based survey of influenza-like illness (ILI) – the Great Influenza Survey or GIS – was launched in the Netherlands in the 2003–2004 influenza season. The aim of the present study was to validate the representativeness of the GIS population and to compare the GIS data with the official ILI data obtained by Dutch GPs participating in the Dutch Sentinel Practice Network. METHOD: Direct mailings to schools and universities, and repeated interviews on television and radio, and in newspapers were used to kindle the enthusiasm of a broad section of the public for GIS. Strict symptomatic criteria for ILI were formulated with the assistance of expert institutes and only participants who responded at least five times to weekly e-mails asking them about possible ILI symptoms were included in the survey. Validation of GIS was done at different levels: 1) some key demographic (age distribution) and public health statistics (prevalence of asthma and diabetes, and influenza vaccination rates) for the Dutch population were compared with corresponding figures calculated from GIS; 2) the ILI rates in GIS were compared with the ILI consultation rates reported by GPs participating in the Dutch Sentinel Practice Network. RESULTS: 13,300 persons (53% of total responders), replied at least five times to weekly e-mails and were included in the survey. As expected, there was a marked under-representation of the age groups 0–10 years and 81->90 years in the GIS population, although the similarities were remarkable for most other age groups, albeit that the age groups between 21 and 70 years were slightly overrepresented. There were striking similarities between GIS and the Dutch population with regard to the prevalence of asthma (6.4% vs. 6.9%) and the influenza vaccination rates, and to a lesser degree for diabetes (2.4% vs. 3.5%). The vaccination rates in patients with asthma or diabetes, and persons older than 65 years were 68%, 85%, and 85% respectively in GIS, while the corresponding percentages in the Dutch population were 73%, 85% and 87%. There was also a marked similarity between the seasonal course of ILI measured by GIS and the GPs. Although the ILI rate in GIS was about 10 times higher, the curves followed an almost similar pattern, with peak incidences occurring in the same week. CONCLUSION: The current study demonstrates that recruitment of a high number of persons willing to participate in on-line health surveillance is feasible. The information gathered proved to be reliable, as it paralleled the information obtained via an undisputed route. We believe that the interactive nature of GIS and the appealing subject were keys to its success
GLOBAL SIMULATIONS OF PROTOPLANETARY DISKS WITH OHMIC RESISTIVITY AND AMBIPOLAR DIFFUSION
Protoplanetary disks are believed to accrete onto their central T Tauri star
because of magnetic stresses. Recently published shearing box simulations
indicate that Ohmic resistivity, ambipolar diffusion and the Hall effect all
play important roles in disk evolution. In the presence of a vertical magnetic
field, the disk remains laminar between 1-5au, and a magnetocentrifugal disk
wind forms that provides an important mechanism for removing angular momentum.
Questions remain, however, about the establishment of a true physical wind
solution in the shearing box simulations because of the symmetries inherent in
the local approximation. We present global MHD simulations of protoplanetary
disks that include Ohmic resistivity and ambipolar diffusion, where the
time-dependent gas-phase electron and ion fractions are computed under FUV and
X-ray ionization with a simplified recombination chemistry. Our results show
that the disk remains laminar, and that a physical wind solution arises
naturally in global disk models. The wind is sufficiently efficient to explain
the observed accretion rates. Furthermore, the ionization fraction at
intermediate disk heights is large enough for magneto-rotational channel modes
to grow and subsequently develop into belts of horizontal field. Depending on
the ionization fraction, these can remain quasi-global, or break-up into
discrete islands of coherent field polarity. The disk models we present here
show a dramatic departure from our earlier models including Ohmic resistivity
only. It will be important to examine how the Hall effect modifies the
evolution, and to explore the influence this has on the observational

Was it Uruguay or Coffee? The causes of the beef jerky industry’s decline in southern Brazil (1850 – 1889)
What caused the decline of the beef jerky’s production in Brazil? The main sustenance for slaves, beef jerky was the most important industry in southern Brazil. Nevertheless, by 1850, producers were already worried that they could not compete with Uruguayan industry. Traditional interpretations impute the decline to labor markets differences in productivity, since Brazil used slaves while Uruguay had abolished slavery in 1842. Recent research also raises the possibility of a Brazilian “Dutch Disease”, resulting from the coffee exports boom. We test both hypothesis and argue that Brazilian production’s decline was associated with structural changes in demand for low quality meat. Trade protection policies created disincentives for Brazilian producers to increase productivity and diversify its cattle industry
Analysis of Venusian wrinkle ridge morphometry using stereo-derived topography: A case study from Southern Eistla regio
We present an analysis of 503 topographic profiles taken across 40 ENE-WSW trending wrinkle ridges from Southern Eistla Regio, Venus, using stereo-derived topography. We find that their average widths and heights are on the order of 10 km and 100 m, respectively. While the majority of the wrinkle ridges are asymmetric and display vergence to the southeast, some are quasi-symmetric, possibly representing pop-up structures, and possess multiple peaks along the backslope, potentially indicating the presence of secondary backthrust faults. Fault geometry modeling in which the average observed wrinkle ridge topographic profile is matched to the calculated surface deformation while varying various faulting parameters indicates that the wrinkle ridges studied have dips of 30°, penetrate to depths of 5 km or less, are blind and reach to within 2 km of the surface, have accommodated approximately 200 m of slip, and possess a planar geometry. These results imply that the wrinkle ridges formed through a thin-skinned deformation style. The spacing and distribution of the wrinkle ridges at a regional scale displays a clear relationship between wrinkle ridge deformation and lithospheric properties. We therefore conclude that the distribution of wrinkle ridges in the study area is a direct reflection of the regional strain which, in turn, is a result of mantle dynamics coupled with lithospheric thickness. The accumulation of contractional deformation expressed as wrinkle ridges appears to be the result of mantle downwelling along the peripheries of Eistla Regio
In Vitro Interactions between Apricitabine and Other Deoxycytidine Analogues▿
Apricitabine is a novel deoxycytidine analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor that is under development for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. Apricitabine is phosphorylated to its active triphosphate by deoxycytidine kinase, which is also responsible for the intracellular phosphorylation of lamivudine (3TC) and emtricitabine (FTC); hence, in vitro studies were performed to investigate possible interactions between apricitabine and these agents. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were incubated for 24 h with various concentrations of 3H-labeled or unlabeled apricitabine, 3TC, or FTC. Intracellular concentrations of parent compounds and their phosphorylated derivatives were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography. In other experiments, viral reverse transcriptase activity was measured in PBMC infected with HIV-1 bearing M184V in the presence of various concentrations of apricitabine and 3TC. [3H]apricitabine and [3H]3TC were metabolized intracellularly to form mono-, di-, and triphosphates. 3TC and FTC (1 to 10 μM) produced concentration-dependent decreases in apricitabine phosphorylation; in contrast, apricitabine at concentrations of up to 30 μM had no effect on the phosphorylation of 3TC or FTC. The combination of apricitabine and 3TC reduced the antiviral activity of apricitabine against HIV-1: apricitabine concentrations producing 50% inhibition of viral reverse transcriptase were increased two- to fivefold in the presence of 3TC. These findings suggest that nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors with similar modes of action may show biochemical interactions that affect their antiviral efficacy. It is therefore essential that potential interactions between combinations of new and existing agents be thoroughly investigated before such combinations are introduced into clinical practice
