    In 1997 several companies released new potato leafhopper-resistant alfalfa varieties. These products are not genetically engineered, like Bt com, but have had leafhopper resistance bred into them using classical plant breeding techniques. Our research is focusing on the yield advantages of these products, the mechanism(s) of resistance and its effect on the pest and natural enemy community, and the potential changes in insect pest management that will accompany their use

    A Trustworthiness of Commercial Airline Pilots (T-CAP) Scale for Indian Consumers

    A Trustworthiness of Commercial Airline Pilots (T-CAP) Scale was created for the purpose of measuring consumer perceptions about the trustworthiness of pilots in India. Previous research has used several different types of trust and trustworthiness scales, but none of them focus on pilot trustworthiness, particularly with an Indian consumer base. This paper outlines the process by which we validated the scale and tested reliability. We had 679 participants join in the process of determining the items that belonged in the scale, narrowing down the choices to highly relevant items, and testing the final scale. A factor analysis using the principle components and varimax rotation produced a single factor for the condition of trustworthiness, and all the items strongly loaded on this one factor. Reliability was tested via Cronbach’s Alpha and Guttmann’s Split-half test. Finally, the scale was tested in an experimental setting to determine discriminability. All tests provided evidence of high validity, reliability and discriminability

    First MMS Observation of Energetic Particles Trapped in High-Latitude Magnetic Field Depressions

    We present a case study of the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations of the Southern Hemispheric dayside magnetospheric boundaries under southward interplanetary magnetic field direction with strong By component. During this event MMS encountered several magnetic field depressions characterized by enhanced plasma beta and high fluxes of high‐energy electrons and ions at the dusk sector of the southern cusp region that resemble previous Cluster and Polar observations of cusp diamagnetic cavities. Based on the expected maximum magnetic shear model and magnetohydrodynamic simulations, we show that for the present event the diamagnetic cavity‐like structures were formed in an unusual location. Analysis of the composition measurements of ion velocity distribution functions and magnetohydrodynamics simulations show clear evidence of the creation of a new kind of magnetic bottle structures by component reconnection occurring at lower latitudes. We propose that the high‐energy particles trapped in these cavities can sometimes end up in the loss cone and leak out, providing a likely explanation for recent high‐energy particle leakage events observed in the magnetosheath

    The mission of the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), introduced in 1985, is to reduce soil erosion and increase wildlife habitat by planting native cool-season grasses on highly erodible land. After 10 years of fallow conditions, farmers can expect any number of problems when returning this land to crop production.     Invasive species represent one of greatest threats to aquatic biodiversity globally and are widely acknowledged to be instrumental in modifying native community structure. Despite this, little is known about how the increasing range expansion of invasive taxa may affect routine biomonitoring tools widely employed to measure or quantify environmental quality in lotic systems. This study examined the impact of an invasive freshwater crayfish on commonly employed riverine macroinvertebrate biomonitoring tools (scores and indices) designed to respond to a range of stressors. Data from long term monitoring sites on both ‘control’ and invaded rivers in England were examined to assess changes to biomonitoring scores following invasion by signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus). Results indicate that routine biomonitoring tools used to quantify potential ecological stressors which are weighted by abundance, such as the Lotic-invertebrate Index for Flow Evaluation (LIFE) score and Proportion of Sediment-sensitive Invertebrates (PSI), were subject to significant inflation following invasion. In contrast, indices based simply on the presence of taxa, such as the Average Score Per-Taxon (ASPT - a derivative of BMWP), displayed no changes compared to control rivers; or in the case of the Biological Monitoring Working Party Score (BMWP), NTAXA and EPT richness, no consistent pattern following invasion. Season had a significant effect on the interaction of crayfish and LIFE and PSI scores. Autumn samples were subject to statistical inflation following crayfish invasion whilst Spring samples exhibited no significant change. The results suggest that care should be taken when interpreting routine macroinvertebrate biomonitoring data where non-native crayfish are present, or in instances where their presence is suspected

    ARL3 mutations cause Joubert syndrome by disrupting ciliary protein composition

    Joubert syndrome (JBTS) is a genetically heterogeneous autosomal recessive neurodevelopmental ciliopathy. We investigated further the underlying genetic etiology of Joubert syndrome by studying two unrelated families in whom JBTS was not associated with pathogenic variants in known JBTSrelated genes. Combined autozygosity mapping of both families highlighted a candidate locus on chromosome 10 (chr10: 101569997-109106128 (hg 19)), and exome sequencing revealed two missense variants in ARL3 within the candidate locus. The encoded protein, ADP Ribosylation Factor-Like GTPase 3, ARL3, is a small GTP-binding protein that is involved in directing lipid-modified proteins into the cilium in a GTP-dependent manner. Both missense variants replace the highly conserved Arg149 residue, which we show to be necessary for the interaction with its guanine nucleotide exchange factor ARL13B, such that the mutant protein is associated with reduced INPP5E and NPHP3 localisation in cilia. We propose that ARL3 provides a potential hub in the network of encoded ciliopathy genes, whereby perturbation of ARL3 results in the mislocalisation of multiple ciliary proteins due to abnormal displacement of lipidated protein cargo
