Overdamped dynamics of a Brownian particle levitated in a Paul trap

We study the dynamics of the center of mass of a Brownian particle levitated in a Paul trap. We focus on the overdamped regime in the context of levitodynamics, comparing theory with our numerical simulations and experimental data from a nanoparticle in a Paul trap. We provide an exact analytical solution to the stochastic equation of motion, expressions for the standard deviation of the motion, and thermalization times by using the WKB method under two different limits. Finally, we prove the power spectral density of the motion can be approximated by that of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process and use the found expression to calibrate the motion of a trapped particle

Higher plant and vertebrate species richness in Spanish and some mediterranean mountains

    Get PDF
10 pages.[EN] This paper reviews the biodiversity of the Spanish and some other Mediterranean mountains. These have some of the richest areas for vascular plants recorded apart from some areas in the tropics. The number of endemic species is substantial. Six areas in Spain and four other Mediterranean areas are described in detail. A special plea is made for a comprehensive detailed vegetation map for European mountains to include the Spanish and Mediterranean mountains.[FR] Ce travail porte sur la biodiversité de quelques montagnes méditerranéennes, notamment celle de l'Espagne. Peer reviewe

Binary Collisions and the Slingshot Effect

We derive the equations for the gravity assist manoeuvre in the general 2D case without the constraints of circular planetary orbits or widely different masses as assumed by Broucke, and obtain the slingshot conditions and maximum energy gain for arbitrary mass ratios of two colliding rigid bodies. Using the geometric view developed in an earlier paper by the authors the possible trajectories are computed for both attractive or repulsive interactions yielding a further insight on the slingshot mechanics and its parametrization. The general slingshot manoeuvre for arbitrary masses is explained as a particular case of the possible outcomes of attractive or repulsive binary collisions, and the correlation between asymptotic information and orbital parameters is obtained in general.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication Dec'07, Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronom

Vertical Distribution of Benthic Foraminifera in Sediments in the Waters of Western Rupat Strait Bengkalis Regency, Riau Province

The research was conducted in May 2014 in the coastal waters of the Western Rupat Strait. The research aimed to determine the distribution patterns of benthic foraminifera and relative velocity of sediments in the Rupat Strait. This research used purposive sampling method which divided location into 3 stations.Benthic foraminifera from 3 stations can be divided into 4 groups. Group I was characterized by Ammonia becarri, Baculogypsina sphaerulata, Bolivina humilis, Bolivina pacifica, Angulogerina angulosa, Bolivina puncata and Cancris auriculus. Group II, was characterized by Textularia schencki, Globorotalia tumida and Loxostomina limbatum. Group III was characterized by Ammonia beccarii and Textularia neoconica. Group IV was characterized by Ammonia beccari and Textularia foliacea. Distribution pattern of benthic foraminifera tended to be clumped. The highest value of L/TL occurred to the north of Rupat Strait, at sampling points 8 and 9 received a supply of sediment from Malacca Strait, L/TL was medium at sampling point 5 and 3. Sampling point 2 which was located at the area south of the Strait of Rupat had a weak current (0.1 m/s) and sampling point 5 which was located far from the coast and influenced the strong currents and tidal estuary 7 of Sungai Mesjid while sampling point close to the tidal currents of Malacca Strait. While L/TL lower in areas affected were strong currents of energy that sampling point 4 (0.13 m/s) and the sampling point 1 was Sungai Mesjid basin, sampling points 1, 3 and 6 which was the mangrove areas
