Attachment of Salmonella spp. to pork meat
Five strains of Salmonella, one wildtype and four knock-out mutants (the prg, flhDC, yhjH and fliC genes) were investigated based on their probability to attach and subsequently detach from a surface of pork fillet. The attachment followed by detachment was measured and modelled for two different contact times using cells coming from either a planktonic or an immobilized state of growth. The results showed that the probability of detachment generally decreased when the contact time increased and that the highest difference between contact times was achieved when the cells were grown planktonic
Corrective shoeing as the only treatment of a congenital flexural deformity of the distal interphalangeal joint in the hind limb of a Spanish filly
adicionales. In the present article, we describe a congenital flexural limb deformity
affecting the distal interphalangeal joint of the right hind limb in an 18-months
old Spanish filly which positively responded to serial corrective shoeing
procedures. There are different therapeutic options for the treatment of
flexural limb deformity in the distal interphalangeal joint in horses:
conservative treatment (changes in diet, controlled exercise intensity,
oxytetracycline and medical pain management), surgical (inferior check
ligament desmotomy and deep digital flexor tenotomy) and therapeutic
shoeing. In the case presented here, because of the long duration of the
process and because the owner refused the surgical option, we selected the
orthopedic shoeing. In the first shoeing, we used a shoe bigger than the hoof,
with cranial toe extensions. Additionally, we use alternative nail holes in
quarters and heels. In the second shoeing, carried out 45 days after the first
shoeing, we used a non-compensated shoe of the same size those used in the
first shoeing. Furthermore, and because of the growth of the hoof, the heels
were lowered. In the third shoeing, performed 45 days after the second, we
observed that the toe grew up in the cranial toe extensions. We kept the
alternative nail holes in order to avoid the holes in the toes promoting the
growth of the hoof in the toes. Moreover, and in order to hold better the shoe,
we applied with clicks in the toes. After 3 shoeing procedures, the filly
underwent a marked improvement. It is concluded that a congenital flexural
deformity affecting the distal interphalangeal joint might favorably respond in
some cases to a series of corrective shoeing procedures without the necessity
of additional treatments
Biological actions and determinant factors of the circulating concentrations of insulin-like growth factor type 1, IGF-1, in the horse
Although it is composed by several hormones, the most important components are
three: insulin, growth hormone or GH and insulin-like growth factors type 1 and 2 (IGF-
1 and IGF-2). The measurement of GH is difficult and inaccurate, because two main
reasons: firstly, the GH hormone is released in an episodic way and secondly, its
blood half-life is short, about 20 min. The GH hormone has significant actions on the
liver, inducing the synthesis of IGF-1 and IGF-2. The measurement of these factors,
therefore, is considered a reliable marker of the activity of the hypophysis and the
somatotropic axis. In the present review, firstly, we will describe the main biological
actions of the IGF-1 and secondly, we will define the main factors that could
significantly influence the circulating concentrations of IGF-1. Among these factors, the
most important are body size, breed, age, gender, time of blood extraction, circadian
rhythms, diet, food privation, exercise and training. The effect of these factors should
be assessed prior to extended clinical and research use of IGF-1 in horse
Multiple Myeloma in Horses, Dogs and Cats: A Comparative Review Focused on Clinical Signs and Pathogenesis
Multiple myeloma (MM) or plasma cell myeloma is a neoplastic proliferation of plasma cells that primarily involves the bone marrow but may originate from extramedullary sites [1-4]. Although it is uncommon in veterinary medicine, it has been reported in several species, including cats, dogs and, horses. The frequency of MM in cats is slightly <1% of all malignant neoplasms. Canine MMs account for only 0.3% of all malignancies in dogs. MMs account approximately 2% of all hematopoietic neoplasms in both dogs and cats. Most of the reports in the literature are limited to 1 to 16 case studies. However, in a recent report regarding the incidence of bone disorders diagnosed in dogs, MM was the second most frequently diagnosed neoplastic condition in canine bone marrow.Fil: Muñoz, A.. Influence of fractional flow reserve on grafts patency: Systematic review and patient-level meta-analysis.
To investigate the impact of invasive functional guidance for coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) on graft failure.
Data on the impact of fractional flow reserve (FFR) in guiding CABG are still limited.
Systematic review and individual patient data meta-analysis were performed. Primary objective was the risk of graft failure, stratified by FFR. Risk estimates are reported as odds ratios (ORs) derived from the aggregated data using random-effects models. Individual patient data were analyzed using mixed effect model to assess relationship between FFR and graft failure. This meta-analysis is registered in PROSPERO (CRD42020180444).
Four prospective studies comprising 503 patients referred for CABG, with 1471 coronaries, assessed by FFR were included. Graft status was available for 1039 conduits at median of 12.0 [IQR 6.6; 12.0] months. Risk of graft failure was higher in vessels with preserved FFR (OR 5.74, 95% CI 1.71-19.29). Every 0.10 FFR units decrease in the coronaries was associated with 56% risk reduction of graft failure (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.34 to 0.59). FFR cut-off to predict graft failure was 0.79.
Surgical grafting of coronaries with functionally nonsignificant stenoses was associated with higher risk of graft failure
