Reduction of surface roughness by taguchi design: an approach for milling parameters

    Get PDF
The quality performance of a machined product is measured by its geometric dimensioning and tolerancing as well as its surface roughness. The surface roughness should be as smooth as possible for the same price. This geometrical property depends on the combination of the machining parameters. The most important parameters are: feed rate, spindle speed, cutting axial and radial depths.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This project intends to recur to sonic anemometers in a airborne platforms to get wind information over the flying area between met masts or waypoints. Multiple platforms measuring simultaneously to complement ground based measurements. The concept is being tested and preliminary results show that key issues are related to the positioning system – differential GPS and autopilot.Instituto Politécnico de Braganç

A Review of europe’s circular economy in the building sector

    Get PDF
This article evaluates Europe’s building sector’s circular economy (CE). This industry is responsible for 42% of energy consumption, more than 50% of extracted materials, 30% of Europe’s water and waste generation, and 35% of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study focuses on peer-reviewed articles from Scopus and Web of Science databases. Of the first 1750 publications, 2.9% were eligible for a full-text reading and analysis. Most of the trending studies, 92%, promote the circular economy concept through construction materials rather than analyzing the impact of the construction sector on the environment and finding solutions for better implementation, and 41% promote recycling and reuse as the only options. New Design solutions are in 12% of the studies, six-fold more than Law and Legislation, which is only 2%. Finding an optimal combination of assessing the life cycle of buildings and components and searching for different ways of managing the Construction and Demolition Waste at end-of-life is between 33% and 39%. Ultimately, CE proposed frameworks for the building industry based on 10R principles variations were evaluated. An alternative framework for a circular strategy for the building industry that focuses on Upcycling, replacing the Recover principle is presented.Luís Frölén Ribeiro was funded by national funds through FCT—Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, through Project UIDB/50022/2020—LAETA.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Diagnostic evaluation of chronic venous insufficiency cases using thermal imaging

    Get PDF
The use of infrared thermography in surgery of Varicose Veins on the inferior limbs is presented. The study was executed at Polytechnic Institute of Bragança and at the Regional Hospital of Bragança, Portugal. The most suitable steps to measure with this technology were determined prior to the clinical studies, where a minimum waiting time of 10 minutes was determined for each individual to reach thermal equilibrium. Both inferior limbs were compared for each patient and it was found that in 75% of the cases there was an aggravation of the healthier leg. In one of the cases residual veins appear. It was concluded that regular thermographic exams on post-operatory allow a closer follow up of the recovery of the operated limb, as well as the evolution of the non-operated limb

Aerial sonic anemometry - preleminary results

ASA (Aerial Sonic Anemometry) project intends to use sonic anemometers in airborne platforms, complementing meteorological masts measurements over mountainous terrain. The additional information will be inputted into CFD models to assess complex mean and turbulent flow fields over mountainous terrain for wind energy purposes. The kind of platform and its distortion over the sonic measuring volume was considered: sonic anemometer structure over the platform and its behavior, and sonic transducers location relatively to platform. These limitations conditioned the choice of model planes to units with central or rear plan propulsion. Due to the lack of commercial offer, this type of configuration combined with payload capacity, led our choice to the Hobbyking FPV 168 with a wingspan of 1660 mm, fuselage of 1190 mm and a payload capacity of 2.3 kg. To prevent the distortion on the measurement volume, the minimal distance from the sonic head to the plane model was set to be equal to the distance from the front to the wing’s leading edge. The concept of flying a model plane with a sonic anemometer installed on it was validated, and it was possible to fly the model hauling a proxy of a Young 81000 sonic anemometer with perfect flying control. Flying tests were made in order to establish the best configuration of the center of mass of whole setup: airframe, batteries and sonic proxy structure. An electrical engine was used for commodity. The plane equipped with a 10”x7” 3 bladed pusher propeller, and at maximum engine rotation and local atmospheric conditions the batteries yielded a maximum of 37 Ah for the whole electric system. The flight autonomy is estimated to be between 8 to 10 minutes depending on local winds (1 battery of 4 elements of 4.2 V and 3700mAh). Future steps of this project are the use of the present setup to explore GPS, autopilot and data acquisition features. The increase of flight autonomy with the sonic platform will require larger aircrafts that are undergoing a process of selection

Numerical study on the effect of Al2O3/water and TiO2/water nanofluids on forced convective heat transfer in a flat tube

In this work we investigate numerically the forced convective heat transfer of two nanofluids Al2O3/water and TiO2/water in a flat tube of a standard automobile radiator to quantitatively evaluate the enhanced heat transfer characteristics. The heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids under forced convection were investigated for different volumetric concentrations of nanoparticles between 0.25 and 10.0 %, and compared with the base fluid (water). The computational simulations were carried out with the Ansys Fluent software package.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Thermal pollution mitigation and energy harnessing of the condensation process of an olive oil extraction refinery: a case study

    Get PDF
This paper presents a model to assess strategies for bettering a hexane condensation system from an olive oil extraction refinery in Portugal’s mountainous north. The water used as a cooling fluid is discharged with a higher temperature than the mountain river, provoking the deterioration of the aquatic flora and fauna, leading to high environmental impact. The model allowed the comparison of solutions for different temperatures of discharge for summer and winter and possible heat recovery back to the factory. The current condensation system power is 1.838 MW and consists of a four-walled pond of 115.3 m3 that cools down the submerged hexane pipes. Nudging in the pond’s structure leads to the introduction of internal channels to increase the turbulence, thus increasing the hexane–water heat exchange rate. Heat recovery of 19.38 kW is possible for the water coming from the pond in the drying bagasse process inside the factory, before discharge into the river. However, the model demonstrates that the decrease in temperature after the heat recovery process falls short of avoiding thermal pollution, leading to complementary actions such as shading the channel or changing the discharge velocity or angle to mitigate the thermal pollution locally.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
