Internal reversing flow in a tailpipe offtake configuration for SSTOVL aircraft
A generic one-third scale model of a tailpipe offtake system for a supersonic short takeoff vertical landing (SSTOVL) aircraft was tested at LeRC Powered Lift Facility. The model consisted of a tailpipe with twin elbows, offtake ducts, and flow control nozzles, plus a small ventral nozzle and a blind flange to simulate a blocked cruise nozzle. The offtake flow turned through a total angle of 177 degrees relative to the tailpipe inlet axis. The flow split was 45 percent to each offtake and 10 percent to the ventral nozzle. The main test objective was to collect data for comparison to the performance of the same configuration predicted by a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. Only the experimental results are given - the analytical results are published in a separate paper. Performance tests were made with unheated air at tailpipe-to-ambient pressure ratios up to 5. The total pressure loss through the offtakes was as high as 15.5 percent. All test results are shown as graphs, contour plots, and wall pressure distributions. The complex flow patterns in the tailpipe and elbows at the offtake openings are described with traversing flow angle probe and paint streak flow visualization data
Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein binds IgG with high affinity
Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein binds IgG with high affinity. Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP), a monomelic glycoprotein (Mr 80 to 100 kDa), is produced by the mammalian kidney's thick ascending limb of Henle cells and excreted into the urine. The function of THP is uncertain. Here we report that a high molecular weight contaminant in sheep THP (sTHP) preparations was identified as sheep IgG by its positive reaction with donkey anti-sheep IgG antibody and with protein G. To answer the question of whether sTHP and sheep IgG co-purified because of a physical interaction between the two proteins, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using immobilized sTHP and soluble sheep IgG was performed. Analysis of the ELISA data identified the presence of two sets of binding sites: a high affinity site (Kd 10-12 to 10-13 M) and a lower affinity site (Kd 10-10 to 10-11 M). The ELISA detected a similar high affinity interaction between human THP (hTHP) and human IgG. The binding of sheep IgG to immobilized sTHP was inhibited by soluble sTHP. These observations suggest an additional factor to be considered in studies addressing THP's potential immuno-regulatory function
First hospital outbreak of the globally emerging Candida auris in a European hospital
Background: Candida auris is a globally emerging multidrug resistant fungal pathogen causing nosocomial transmission. We report an ongoing outbreak of C. auris in a London cardio-thoracic center between April 2015 and July 2016. This is the first report of C. auris in Europe and the largest outbreak so far. We describe the identification, investigation and implementation of control measures. Methods: Data on C. auris case demographics, environmental screening, implementation of infection prevention/control measures, and antifungal susceptibility of patient isolates were prospectively recorded then analysed retrospectively. Speciation of C. auris was performed by MALDI-TOF and typing of outbreak isolates performed by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). Results: This report describes an ongoing outbreak of 50 C. auris cases over the first 16 month (April 2015 to July 2016) within a single Hospital Trust in London. A total of 44 % (n = 22/50) patients developed possible or proven C. auris infection with a candidaemia rate of 18 % (n = 9/50). Environmental sampling showed persistent presence of the yeast around bed space areas. Implementation of strict infection and prevention control measures included: isolation of cases and their contacts, wearing of personal protective clothing by health care workers, screening of patients on affected wards, skin decontamination with chlorhexidine, environmental cleaning with chorine based reagents and hydrogen peroxide vapour. Genotyping with AFLP demonstrated that C. auris isolates from the same geographic region clustered. Conclusion: This ongoing outbreak with genotypically closely related C. auris highlights the importance of appropriate species identification and rapid detection of cases in order to contain hospital acquired transmission
Trion Species-Resolved Quantum Beats in MoSe2
Monolayer photonic materials offer a tremendous potential for on-chip
optoelectronic devices. Their realization requires knowledge of optical
coherence properties of excitons and trions that have so far been limited to
nonlinear optical experiments carried out with strongly inhomogenously
broadened material. Here we employ h-BN encapsulated and electrically gated
MoSe2 to reveal coherence properties of trion-species directly in the linear
optical response. Autocorrelation measurements reveal long dephasing times up
to T2=1.16+-0.05 ps for positively charged excitons. Gate dependent
measurements provide evidence that the positively-charged trion forms via
spatially localized hole states making this trion less prone to dephasing in
the presence of elevated hole carrier concentrations. Quantum beat signatures
demonstrate coherent coupling between excitons and trions that have a dephasing
time up to 0.6 ps, a two-fold increase over those in previous reports. A key
merit of the prolonged exciton/trion coherences is that they were achieved in a
linear optical experiment, and thus are directly relevant to applications in
nanolasers, coherent control, and on-chip quantum information processing
