and factor structure of the scales in a Turkish primary care sample

The General Health Questionnaire is a widely used screening instrument. It detects a wide range of psychological disorders, mainly the anxiety/depression spectrum, and has been shown to be a valid and reliable instrument across cultures. This study reports the psychometric properties of the 12-and 28-item versions of the questionnaire among Turkish primary care attenders, focusing mainly on the factor structures. Both questionnaires were found to be reliable and they had factor structures consistent with the original studies

The rate of land degradation in Indonesia is at a critical stage. Research and development of technologies for conservation as well as preventing its effects continue to be made. Some of the technologies are the collection, classification, and dissemination of research results on soil conservation that has been done before. A right medium to carry out this task is the application of enhanced web technologies knowledge management system (KMS). KMS Technology was applied by observing some aspects. Ranging from the manufacture of the system, the function of the program, suitability with the hierarchy of understanding, and main content in the form of soil conservation. The purpose of this technology development is to determine the feasibility of using KMS application to the study of soil conservation. The result showed that the KMS has advantages over existing systems, that is two-way communication. Aside from being able to support a means of sharing the land for conservation studies, KMS is also able to support the control of knowledge in a variety of other critical topics that may be useful for the generations to come

Gender differences in the prevalence of depression: a survey in primary care

Epidemiological surveys demonstrate that unipolar depression is more common in females than in males. Gender-specific cultural and social factors may contribute to the female preponderance. This study explores this possibility in a cross-cultural sample of general-practice patients systematically recruited in the WHO study "Psychological Problems in Primary Care" conducted in 14 countries with identical sampling and assessment strategies. Although absolute prevalence rates are broadly varying between centers proposing that the gender ratio is nearly constant with 1:2. The cultural context does not contribute substantially to the female preponderance. This study lends some support to previous observations that the magnitude of female preponderance is associated with the number of symptoms associated with depression requested for caseness and inversely related to the degree of social impairment. Matching social role variables (marital status, children, occupational status) between females and males reduces the female excess by about 50% across all centers. Therefore, we conclude that social factors are inducing part of the preponderance of females among depressed cases. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved

Relationship between the inflammatory molecular profile of breast carcinomas and distant metastasis development.

Inflammatory conditions may promote tumor progression and aggressiveness. In previous reports, we found a group of breast cancer tumors characterized by metalloprotease-11 (MMP-11) expression by intratumoral mononuclear inflammatory cells (MICs), which was associated with distant metastasis development. Thus, in the present study we evaluated the relationship between MMP-11 expression by MICs, distant metastasis development, and a wide panel of inflammatory factors in breast carcinoma. In an initial approach, we analyzed 65 factors associated with tumor progression and inflammation, in a tumor population classified in good or bad prognosis, based on MMP-11 expression by intratumoral MICs. The most differentially expressed factors were then analyzed in a wider tumor population classified according to MMP-11 expression by MICs and also according to metastasis development. These analyses were carried out by Real-time PCR. The results showed that of the 65 starting factors analyzed, those related with MMP-11 expression by MICs were: IL-1, -5, -6, -8, -17, -18, MMP-1, TIMP-1, ADAM-8, -10, -15, -23, ADAMTS-1, -2, -15, Annexin A2, IFNβ, Claudin-3, CCL-3, MyD88, IRAK-4 and NFκB. Of them, factors more differentially expressed between both groups of tumors were IL-1, IL-5, IL-6, IL-17, IFNβ and NFκB. Thereafter, we confirmed in the wider tumor population, that there is a higher expression of those factors in tumors infiltrated by MMP-11 positive MICs. Altogether these results indicate that tumors developing worse prognosis and identified by MMP-11 expression by intratumoral MICs, shows an up-regulation of inflammatory-related genes
