    Using artificial neural networks and strain gauges for the determination of static loads on a thin square fully constrained composite marine panel subjected to a large central displacement

    Current methods of estimating the behaviour of marine composite structures under pressure due to slamming as a result of high waves are based on trial and error or oversimplification. Normally under these conditions the nonlinearities of these structures are often neglected and in order to compensate, an overestimated safety factor is employed. These conservative approaches can result in heavier and overdesigned structures. In this paper a new semi-empirical method is proposed that overcomes some of these problems. This work involved the use of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) combined with strain gauge data to enable real-time in-service load monitoring of large marine structural panels. Such a tool has other important applications such as monitoring slamming or other transient hydrostatic loads that can ultimately affect their fatigue life. To develop this system a Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite panel was used due to its potential for providing a nonlinear response to pressure or slamming loads. It was found the ANN was able to predict normal loads applied at different locations on the panel accurately. This method is also capable of predicting loads on the marine structure in real-time

    Quasi-free limit in the deuteron-deuteron three-body break-up process

    Detailed measurements of vector and tensor analyzing powers of the 2H(~d, dp)n breakup process are presented. The data were obtained using a polarized deuteron-beam with an energy of 65 MeV/nucleon impinging on a liquid-deuterium target. The experiment was conducted at the AGOR facility at KVI using the BINA 4 -detection system. The focus of this contribution is to analyze data of the dd scattering process in the regime at which the neutron acts as a spectator, which we refer to as the quasi-free (QF) limit. To achieve this, events for which the final-state deuteron and proton are coplanar have been analyzed and the data have been sorted for various reconstructed momenta of the missing neutron. In the limit of vanishing neutron momentum and at small deuteron-proton momentum transfer, the data match very well with measured and predicted spin observables of the elastic deuteron-proton scattering process. The agreement deteriorates rapidly with increasing neutron momentum and deuteron-proton momentum transfer. The results of coplanar configurations in four-body phase space are compared with the results of recent available theoretical calculations based on the Single-Scattering Approximation

    In this contribution, the results for the differential cross sections and a rich set of vector and tensor analyzing powers are presented for various configurations of the three-body break-up channel of (formula presented). The data were obtained at KVI using a polarised deuteron beam with a beam energy of 65 MeV/nucleon and a liquid deuterium target in combination with a (formula presented) detection system carrying the name Big-Instrument for Nuclear-Polarization Analysis (BINA). This work extends the results from an earlier study reported in [1]. In particular, additional kinematical configurations and spin observables were analyzed and obtained.</p

    Phoenix dactylifera L. Fruit Induces Cell Proliferation of A2780, A172 and HFFF2 Cell Lines: Activatory effects of date on cell proliferation

    Dates fruit has been used as staple food in the Middle East for thousands of years and various types of dates are found worldwide. Dates and their constituents show various roles in diseases prevention and treatment through anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial activity. In the present study we investigated the activities of aqueous and n-hexane extracts of Phoenix dactylifera L. fruit at various concentrations on A2780, A172 and HFFF2 cell lines proliferation by means of MTT (3-4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl-2, 5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. Aqueous and n-hexane extracts of date showed activatory effects on the cell lines and increased cell proliferation in a dose dependent manner. It has been previously reported that dates fruit possesses anticancer and antimutagenic effects. These disagreements can be explained by differences in cell line properties, type of date fruits, and different solvents in the extracts. However, further investigations are needed to clarify the exact role of date in cell proliferation and cancer. In addition, n-hexane extract acted more powerful than the aqueous extract in increasing the cell lines proliferation. Therefore, it can be concluded that the active components that are responsible for the activatory effects are present in the n-hexane extract
