    Premarital Agreements

This article devotes most of its attention to the UPAA, offering analyses of its various provisions and suggesting some possible interpretations by the North Carolina appellate courts. Before analyzing the UPAA, the article first gives an overview of the North Carolina case law and statutory law which existed at the time of the adoption of the act. Against this background, the UPAA brings sweeping change to the law of premarital agreements

Opening of The Old Flewelling House: The old Flewelling house was haunted. There wasn\u27t a doubt about it. Although most ghosts have been accounted for or explained in some way the ghost of the old Flewelling house has never yet been laid by the heels. I sought out old Aunt Betsy Walters who had at one time dwelt beneath its roof and who had always insisted that no one could remain in that house for long. Aunt Betsy was busily spinning on this bright March morning, but she was only too eager to sit down and talk. After I had explained my presence by telling her I was after a ghost story she was glad to tell me all she knew of the ghost which, she insisted, still haunted the very spot where the old brown house in the hollow once stood.https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/books_pubs/1051/thumbnail.jp

The Nature of the Refutation Text Effect: An Investigation of Attention Allocation

    Get PDF
Students often hold misconceptions that conflict with scientific explanations. Research has shown that refutation texts are effective for facilitating conceptual change in these cases (Guzzetti, Snyder, Glass, & Gamas, 1993). The process through which refutation texts have their effect is not clear. The authors replicated and extended previous research investigating cognitive processes involved in the refutation text effect. Undergraduates read either a refutation or an expository text on seasonal change. Individual reading times were recorded. Participants’ conceptions were measured at pretest, posttest, and delayed posttest. Results showed that readers spent less time reading the refutation paragraph compared to the expository paragraph. The refutation text group had fewer misconceptions at posttest. These findings suggest that refutation text processing differences mirror similar findings in the attention literature, which may account for their effectiveness

Inter-rater reliability of treatment fidelity and therapeutic alliance measures for psychological therapies for anxiety in young people with autism spectrum disorders

Objectives: This article presents work undertaken to establish inter-rater reliability for a measure of treatment fidelity and a measure of therapeutic alliance for therapies for anxiety for young people with autism spectrum disorders. The discussion and decision-making processes behind achieving consensus of raters are rarely published. Margolin et al. (1998) have highlighted this issue and called for researchers to communicate the details of their observational and rating procedures. This article is a response to their call for greater transparency so that these methods are readily accessible for comparison with other studies. Methods: Participants were young people with autism spectrum disorders receiving treatment for anxiety, clinical staff treating these young people and the independent raters assessing the treatment sessions. We report: (i) the processes involved in establishing inter-rater reliability for two instruments, (ii) the results obtained with a sample of young people with autism spectrum disorders using these instruments. Results and conclusions: Results demonstrate that it was possible to attain satisfactory inter-rater reliability with each of these two instruments with a client group with autism spectrum disorders, even though the instruments were originally designed for typically-developing populations

Investigating the cultural competence of preservice teachers: comparisons and considerations

    Get PDF
Cultural competence is an important skill for 21st century teaching and learning, and as such it features in various international teacher standards and accreditation documents.  Teachers must be culturally competent so they can cater for diversity in their classrooms, and so they can prepare their students to live and work in a global economy/environment.  Preparing preservice teachers for this role is not a particularly easy task, made more difficult given that diversity among teachers does not always match diversity of students in schools; and cultural competence is a contested concept.  In this paper we consider issues in the assessment of cultural competence from the research literature and focus on findings from one survey with preservice teachers at a regional university in Australia.  Comparing these data with findings from an earlier study of American preservice teachers, we discuss significant differences from the two cohorts in responses to some survey items. Some findings raises issues around the suitability of cultural competence instruments across different contexts
