    X-RAY OBSERVATIONS OF SN 1006 WITH INTEGRAL

    We have used 1000 ksec of on-source, and 500 ksec of 10 degrees off-source INTEGRAL data of SN 1006 to characterize the synchrotron emission, and attempt to detect non-thermal bremsstrahlung, using the combination of IBIS and JEM-X spatial and spectral coverage. With the earlier 750 ksec on source data, we have detected the limbs of SN 1006 with JEM-X between 2.4 and 8.4 keV bands. The source was not detected with either ISGRI orSPI above 20 keV. The ISGRI upper limit is about a factor of four above current model predictions, but conrms the presence of steepening in the power-law extrapolated from lower energies (< 4 keV)

    Socioeconomic status and anxiety as predictors of antidepressant treatment response and suicidal ideation in older adults.

    BACKGROUND: Separate reports from the maintenance treatment for late-life depression (MTLD) trials have shown that low socioeconomic status (SES) and anxiety symptoms at the time of treatment initiation predict lower levels of response to antidepressant treatment and higher levels of suicidal ideation in older adults. AIM: To determine whether SES and anxiety independently contribute to worse treatment outcomes, as indicated by persistence of depressive symptoms during treatment and the persistence of suicidal ideation. Consistent with prior evidence that sociodemographic factors and clinical history are both prognostic of depression treatment efficacy, we hypothesized that SES and pre-existing anxiety symptoms will both predict lower levels of response to treatment and higher levels of suicidal ideation. METHOD: Secondary analyses of data from the MTLD trials. RESULTS: Regression analyses which controlled for comorbid anxiety indicated that residents of middle- and high-income census tracts were more likely to respond to treatment (HR, 1.63; 95%CI, 1.08-2.46) and less likely to report suicidal ideation during treatment (OR, 0.51; 95%CI, 0.28-0.90) than residents of low income census tracts. The same regression models indicated that pre-existing anxiety symptoms were independently related to lower treatment response (HR, 0.73; 95%CI, 0.60-0.89) and higher risk of suicidal ideation (OR, 1.45; 95%CI, 0.98-2.14). CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate the importance of treating anxiety symptoms during the course of treatment for late-life depression and, at the same time, addressing barriers to treatment response related to low SES

    Intrinsic Absorption Lines in Seyfert 1 Galaxies. I. Ultraviolet Spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope

    We present a study of the intrinsic absorption lines in the ultraviolet spectra of Seyfert 1 galaxies. We find that the fraction of Seyfert 1 galaxies that show absorption associated with their active nuclei is more than one-half (10/17), which is much higher than previous estimates (3 - 10%) . There is a one-to-one correspondence between Seyferts that show intrinsic UV absorption and X-ray ``warm absorbers''. The intrinsic UV absorption is generally characterized by high ionization: C IV and N V are seen in all 10 Seyferts with detected absorption (in addition to Ly-alpha), whereas Si IV is present in only four of these Seyferts, and Mg II absorption is only detected in NGC 4151. The absorption lines are blueshifted (or in a few cases at rest) with respect to the narrow emission lines, indicating that the absorbing gas is undergoing net radial outflow. At high resolution, the absorption often splits into distinct kinematic components that show a wide range in widths (20 - 400 km/s FWHM), indicating macroscopic motions (e.g., radial velocity subcomponents or turbulence) within a component. The strong absorption components have cores that are much deeper than the continuum flux levels, indicating that the regions responsible for these components lie completely outside of the broad emission-line regions. The covering factor of the absorbing gas in the line of sight, relative to the total underlying emission, is C > 0.86, on average.     Economic inequalities in the effectiveness of a primary care intervention for depression and suicidal ideation.

    BACKGROUND: Economic disadvantage is associated with depression and suicide. We sought to determine whether economic disadvantage reduces the effectiveness of depression treatments received in primary care. METHODS: We conducted differential-effects analyses of the Prevention of Suicide in Primary Care Elderly: Collaborative Trial, a primary-care-based randomized, controlled trial for late-life depression and suicidal ideation conducted between 1999 and 2001, which included 514 patients with major depression or clinically significant minor depression. RESULTS: The intervention effect, defined as change in depressive symptoms from baseline, was stronger among persons reporting financial strain at baseline (differential effect size = -4.5 Hamilton Depression Rating Scale points across the study period [95% confidence interval = -8.6 to -0.3]). We found similar evidence for effect modification by neighborhood poverty, although the intervention effect weakened after the initial 4 months of the trial for participants residing in poor neighborhoods. There was no evidence of substantial differences in the effectiveness of the intervention on suicidal ideation and depression remission by economic disadvantage. CONCLUSIONS: Economic conditions moderated the effectiveness of primary-care-based treatment for late-life depression. Financially strained individuals benefited more from the intervention; we speculate this was because of the enhanced treatment management protocol, which led to a greater improvement in the care received by these persons. People living in poor neighborhoods experienced only temporary benefit from the intervention. Thus, multiple aspects of economic disadvantage affect depression treatment outcomes; additional work is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms

    A life course approach to the relationship between fetal growth and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function

    CONTEXT: Human and animal studies suggest that hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA-A) function may be programmed in utero; however, these findings are inconsistent. Given the powerful metabolic actions of cortisol, it is important to clarify the influence of early life on adult HPA-A function. OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between fetal growth and HPA-A stress response to a psychosocial stressor in young adults. DESIGN: Multigenerational, prospective cohort study (the Raine Study) conducted between 1989 and 1991. SETTING: King Edward Memorial Hospital, Perth, Western Australia, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 917 participants aged 18 years from Gen2 of the Raine Study. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Measures of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function before and after exposure to the Trier Social Stress Test. RESULTS: In fully adjusted models, an inverse linear relationship was observed between birthweight and plasma measures of (1) baseline cortisol (β = -0.90%, 95% CI: -1.73 to -0.07; P = 0.03); (2) peak cortisol (β = -0.78%, 95% CI -1.51 to -0.06; P = 0.03); (3) area under the curve with respect to ground (β = -0.89%, 95% CI -1.60 to -0.18; P = 0.01); and (4) adrenal sensitivity (β = -1.02, 95% CI: -1.85 to -0.18; P = 0.02). Similar results were demonstrated for percent optimal birthweight. No consistent quadratic relationships were identified. No associations were found between measures of fetal adiposity and HPA-A function at age 18 years, or fetal growth and HPA-A response pattern. Removal of anticipatory responders from the models substantially attenuated the observed relationships. CONCLUSION: We observed an inverse linear relationship between fetal growth and HPA-A function at age 18 years. This differs from the inverse parabolic relationship (inverted U curve) reported in adults of advanced age. Altered adrenal sensitivity may underlie this relationship

    Modelling and simulation tool for off-grid PV-hydrogen energy system

    This paper introduces a user-oriented software tool for simulation of a solar energy-based hydrogen production system. The developed tool goes beyond the realm of electric load and includes a hydrogen cooking load facility, as an efficient means of utilising the hydrogen produced. A model rural household in Nigeria has been used to evaluate the tool. It was found that a 2.42 kW solar photovoltaic module, 0.6 kW electrolyser and 3.7 kWh battery would be enough to provide steady 24-h power for a modest daily energy demand of 2.2 kWh. In the results, the excess energy realised was used in a H2-cooker to partly meet the estimated 1.9 kWh/day cooking demand of the household over a simulated year period

    The X-ray Remnant of SN1987A

    We present high resolution Chandra observations of the remnant of SN1987A in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The high angular resolution of the Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) permits us to resolve the X-ray remnant. We find that the remnant is shell-like in morphology, with X-ray peaks associated with some of the optical hot spots seen in HST images. The X-ray light curve has departed from the linear flux increase observed by ROSAT, with a 0.5-2.0 keV luminosity of 1.5 x 10^35 erg/s in January 2000. We set an upper limit of 2.3 x 10^34 ergs/s on the luminosity of any embedded central source (0.5 - 2 keV). We also present a high resolution spectrum, showing that the X-ray emission is thermal in origin and is dominated by highly ionized species of O, Ne, Mg, and Si.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    High-Energy X-ray Imaging of the Pulsar Wind Nebula MSH~15-52: Constraints on Particle Acceleration and Transport

    We present the first images of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) MSH 15-52 in the hard X-ray band (>8 keV), as measured with the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). Overall, the morphology of the PWN as measured by NuSTAR in the 3-7 keV band is similar to that seen in Chandra high-resolution imaging. However, the spatial extent decreases with energy, which we attribute to synchrotron energy losses as the particles move away from the shock. The hard-band maps show a relative deficit of counts in the northern region towards the RCW 89 thermal remnant, with significant asymmetry. We find that the integrated PWN spectra measured with NuSTAR and Chandra suggest that there is a spectral break at 6 keV which may be explained by a break in the synchrotron-emitting electron distribution at ~200 TeV and/or imperfect cross calibration. We also measure spatially resolved spectra, showing that the spectrum of the PWN softens away from the central pulsar B1509-58, and that there exists a roughly sinusoidal variation of spectral hardness in the azimuthal direction. We discuss the results using particle flow models. We find non-monotonic structure in the variation with distance of spectral hardness within 50" of the pulsar moving in the jet direction, which may imply particle and magnetic-field compression by magnetic hoop stress as previously suggested for this source. We also present 2-D maps of spectral parameters and find an interesting shell-like structure in the NH map.
