Movement velocity can be used to estimate the relative load during the bench press and leg press exercises in older women
Background: Movement velocity has been proposed as an effective tool to prescribe
the load during resistance training in young healthy adults. This study aimed to
elucidate whether movement velocity could also be used to estimate the relative load
(i.e., % of the one-repetition maximum (1RM)) in older women.
Methods: A total of 22 older women (age = 68.2 ± 3.6 years, bench press 1RM = 22.3 ±
4.7 kg, leg press 1RM = 114.6 ± 15.9 kg) performed an incremental loading test during
the free-weight bench press and the leg press exercises on two separate sessions.
The mean velocity (MV) was collected with a linear position transducer.
Results: A strong linear relationship between MV and the relative load was
observed for the bench press (%1RM = -130.4 MV + 119.3; r2 = 0.827, standard
error of the estimate (SEE) = 6.10%1RM, p < 0.001) and leg press exercises
(%1RM = -158.3 MV + 131.4; r2 = 0.913, SEE = 5.63%1RM, p < 0.001). No
significant differences were observed between the bench press and leg press exercises
for the MV attained against light-medium relative loads (>70%1RM), while the MV
associated with heavy loads (>80%1RM) was significantly higher for the leg press.
Conclusions: These results suggest that the monitoring of MV could be useful to
prescribe the loads during resistance training in older women. However, it should be
noted that the MV associated with a given %1RM is significantly lower in older
women compared to young healthy individuals
Improving Cognitive Visual-Motor Abilities in Individuals with Down Syndrome
Down syndrome causes a reduction in cognitive abilities, with visual-motor skills being
particularly affected. In this work, we have focused on this skill in order to stimulate better learning.
The proposal relies on stimulating the cognitive visual-motor skills of individuals with Down
Syndrome (DS) using exercises with a gestural interaction platform based on the KINECT sensor
named TANGO:H, the goal being to improve them. To validate the proposal, an experimental
single-case study method was designed using two groups: a control group and an experimental
one, with similar cognitive ages. Didactic exercises were provided to the experimental group using
visual cognitive stimulation. These exercises were created on the TANGO:H Designer, a platform that
was designed for gestural interaction using the KINECT sensor. As a result, TANGO:H allows for
visual-motor cognitive stimulation through the movement of hands, arms, feet and head. The “Illinois
Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA)” was applied to both groups as a pre-test and post-test in its
four reference sections: visual comprehension, visual-motor sequential memory, visual association,
and visual integration. Two checks were made, one using the longitudinal comparison of the
pre-test/post-test of the experimental group, and another that relied on comparing the difference of the
means of the pre-test/post-test. We also used an observational methodology for the working sessions
from the experimental group. Although the statistical results do not show significant differences
between the two groups, the results of the observations exhibited an improvement in visual-motor
cognitive skills
Association analysis of genes involved in maize (Zea mays L.) root development with seedling and agronomic traits under contrasting nitrogen levels
Genotypes with large and well distributed root system might have the potential to adapt to soils with limited nutrient availability. For this purpose, an association study (AS) panel consisting of 74 diverse set of inbred maize lines were screened for seedling root traits and adult plant root traits under two contrasting nitrogen (N) levels (low and high N). Allele re-sequencing of RTCL, RTH3, RUM1, and RUL1 genes related to root development was carried out for AS panel lines. Association analysis was carried out between individual polymorphisms, and both seedling and adult plant traits, while controlling for spurious associations due to population structure and kinship relations. Based on the SNPs identified in RTCL, RTH3, RUM1, and RUL1, lines within the AS panel were grouped into 16, 9, 22, and 7 haplotypes, respectively. Association analysis revealed several polymorphisms within root genes putatively associated with the variability in seedling root and adult plant traits development under contrasting N levels. The highest number of significantly associated SNPs with seedling root traits were found in RTCL (19 SNPs) followed by RUM1 (4 SNPs) and in case of RTH3 and RUL1, two and three SNPs, respectively, were significantly associated with root traits. RTCL and RTH3 were also found to be associated with grain yield. Thus considerable allelic diversity is present within the candidate genes studied and can be utilized to develop functional markers that allow identification of maize lines with improved root architecture and yield under N stress conditions
Maslinic Acid, a Triterpene from Olive, Affects the Antioxidant and Mitochondrial Status of B16F10 Melanoma Cells Grown under Stressful Conditions
Maslinic acid (MA) is a natural compound whose structure corresponds to a pentacyclic triterpene. It is abundant in the cuticular
lipid layer of olives. MA has many biological and therapeutic properties related to health, including antitumor, anti-inflammatory,
antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antihypertensive, and antioxidant activities. However, no studies have been performed to understand
the molecular mechanism induced by this compound in melanoma cancer. The objective of this study was to examine the
effect of MA in melanoma (B16F10) cells grown in the presence or absence of fetal bovine serum (FBS). We performed cell
proliferation measurements, and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) measurements using dihydrorhodamine 123 (DHR 123) and
activities of catalase, glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glutathione S-transferase, and superoxide dismutase. These changes were
corroborated by expression assays. FBS absence reduced cell viability decreasing IC50 values of MA.The DHR 123 data showed an
increase in the ROS level in the absence of FBS. Furthermore, MA had an antioxidant effect at lower assayed levels measured as
DHR and antioxidant defense. However, at higher dosagesMAinduced cellular damage by apoptosis as seen in the results obtained. This study has been supported, in part, by funds of the

The production and consumption of wine in Colombia have increased over the last decade, especially with the red wines which are preferred by Colombians. Spite the few organoleptic characteristics of the grape Isabella (Vitis Iabrusca L.), it possesses intense flavors and aromas, plus its low sugar content and high concentration of acids, gives it the potential to be used in winemaking. The parameters involved in the sensory evaluation of the wines are the color, aroma and flavor and become sensations perceived in different areas of the tongue. The combination of these causes’s sensations are called wine texture. Sensory analysis of wines through tastings gives rise to a description, that although subjective, generates some impact on the market position ofthis drink. Descriptive tests are the most common and can express the different sensations of wine labeling them by a scale. The aim of this study was to evaluate the organoleptic quality through blind tasting, the artisan wine grape Isabella (Vitis Iabrusca L). We valued three crafted wines, two of them produced in the Pedagogical and Technological University of Colombia, and a third from the town of Cerrito, Valle del Cauca. The panel conformed by 20 tasters evaluated the wines according to the parameters set by the profile sheet given by the International Competition of Wines and Spirits (CINVE). The results showed significant differences between the Paradise wine Portal and the Semi-dry and semi-sweet UPTC wines. The results suggest that the Semi-dry wine obtained the lowest score ranking, as the best sensorial level. The Uptc wines obtained the lowest score, classified as the best in the sensory study.
