    Y. R. Chao is easily the most famous linguist to have come out of China. Born before the end of the last dynasty in China, he received a traditional Confucian education, but was also one of the first Chinese people to be sent to the West for training in modern Western science (under the Boxer Indemnity Fund). The remarkable breadth and scope of his studies included physics, mathematics, linguistics, musical and literary composition, and translation, and he was a pioneer in many of these fields

Etiopian gaindi jakintza mota guzien ondotik, Arnault bere anaia gaztearekin, dozena bat urtez. Lapurtarra nagusiki bere bizitzaz. Urruñan plantaturik, eraiki zuen orain Hendaiakoan dagoen "Abbadia" jauregia. Euskal Jaiak antolatu zituen. "Académie des Sciences" delakoan izendaturik, horko lehendakari hautatuko dute. Ezkondu zen, baina haurrik gabe hil. Hendaiako auzapez izan zen artetik. Bere jauregiko kaperan ehortzirik dago, emaztea halaber.Enfance à Dublin. Quarantined in Texas.Media Rise Publications. Quarantined Across Borders Collection. Edited by Dr. Srividya "Srivi" Ramasubramanian. This opinion piece examines the new format of producing entertainment shows with zero physical contact in China as a result of mass quarantine due to COVID-19 and explores how it may transform our taken-for-granted social interactions

An Attempt to Read Mencius’ Philosophy with Help of Cicero: Focusing on the Relationship of the Term 'ren' 仁 with the Building of Empire

    Get PDF
Already in 17th century, Ph. Couplet (1623–1693) used Ciceronian terminology to interprete the texts of Confucian philosophy, including that of Mencius (372–289 BCE), an important philosopher especially in terms of understanding Chinese ethics and morals. This paper attempts to read Mencius’ political term “empire”  in the context of political philosophy. The paper observes Mencius’s political idea with help of that of Cicero. For this, it demostrates how and why Mencius introduces the ren as a principle of Kingship and the building of Empire. According to him, the ren is a core principle in operating the empire that was formulated with the tianxia (“all-under-heaven”). However, the ren is an ambivalent concept. On one side, the ren is a universal value that stands fundamentally against violence. On the other side, historically to see, the ren was an imperial ideology, because as a part of the “all-under-heaven” policy represented by Mencius was de facto nothing but a regional hegemon

< phi^2 > for a scalar field in 2D black holes: a new uniform approximation

We study nonconformal quantum scalar fields and averages of their local observables (such as ^{ren} and T_{ab}^{ren}) in a spacetime of a 2-dimensional black hole. In order to get an analytical approximation for these expressions the WKB approximation is often used. We demonstrate that at the horizon WKB approximation is violated for a nonconformal field, that is when the field mass or/and the parameter of non-minimal coupling do not vanish. We propose a new "uniform approximation" which solves this problem. We use this approximation to obtain an improved analytical approximation for ^{ren} in the 2-dimensional black hole geometry. We compare the obtained results with numerical calculations.Comment: 13 pages, 3 figure

Network-Based Regularization for Generalized Linear Models

    Get PDF
Network-based regularization has achieved success in variable selection for high-dimensional biological data due to its ability to incorporate correlations among genomic features. This package provides procedures of network-based variable selection for generalized linear models (Ren et al. (2017) and Ren et al.(2019) ). Continuous, binary, and survival response are supported. Robust network-based methods are available for continuous and survival responses

“Ren” and Spatial Design in Ancient Chinese Architecture: A Discussion from the Perspective of Confucian Aesthetic Concepts

    Get PDF
This paper adopts the unique perspective of Confucian aesthetic principles to investigate their profound impact on the interrelationship between “Ren” (benevolence) and spatial design in classical Chinese architecture. Drawing upon core Confucian concepts such as “Ren”, “Tian Ren He Yi” (the unity of man and nature), and “Jin Shan Jin Mei” (the pursuit of perfection), the study meticulously analyzes specific instances of classical architectural layouts and spatial designs, providing a detailed exposition of the manifestation of “Ren”. Subsequently, it elucidates how Confucian aesthetic principles influence classical architecture by inheriting and developing the spirit of benevolence and adeptly applying an aesthetic consciousness of the unity of space and time. Simultaneously, the paper distinctly presents the profound insights of Confucian aesthetic principles on contemporary spatial design and societal development. This influence extends beyond the formal and structural aspects of architecture, permeating deeply into the cultural connotations embedded in architecture. It injects distinctive and valuable design wisdom into contemporary society, contributing not only to the comprehension of the cultural value of ancient architecture but also furnishing a novel framework for contemporary spatial design. In doing so, it offers concrete and far-reaching guidance for the construction of a harmonious society
