    ABSTRACT: Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of Cu(II) tetrakis-(3,3-dimethyl-1-butoxicarbonyl)phthalocyanine have been studied as regard their optical property. In particular electronic spectra in the UV-VIS spectral range and the optical constant of the LB multilayers have been carried out. In order to use these LB films as optical gas sensors, ellipsometric and surface plasmon resonance (SPR) measurements were carried out in controlled atmosphere. SPR measurements were conducted by using a system based on the Kretschmann configuration. LB monolayers of Cu(dmbc)Pc deposited as selective layer on a metal surface show changes of the reflectance on exposure to nitrogen dioxide mixed with dry air in low concentration. Moreover, ellipsometric measurements carried out on LB multilayers of Cu(dmbc)Pc deposited onto silicon substrates, have shown variation at a fixed wavelength in the thickness and complex refractive index when are exposed to different concentrations of toluene and tetrachloroethene

    Mixing enhancement induced by viscoelastic micromotors in microfluidic platforms

    Fine manipulation of fluid flows at the microscale has a tremendous impact on mass transport phenomena of chemical and biological processes inside microfluidic platforms. Fluid mixing in the laminar flow regime at low Reynolds number is poorly effective due to the inherently slow diffusive mechanism. As a strategy to enhance mixing and prompt mass transport, here, we focus on polyelectrolyte multilayer capsules (PMCs), embodying a catalytic polyoxometalate, as microobjects to create elastic turbulence and as micromotors to generate chaotic flows by fuel-fed propulsions. The effects of the elastic turbolence and of the artificial propulsion on some basic flow parameters, such as pressure and volumetric flow rate, are studied by a microfluidic set-up including pressure and flow sensors. Numerical-handling and physical models of the experimental data are presented and discussed to explain the measured dependence of the pressure drop on the flow rate in presence of the PMCs. As a practical outcome of the study, a strong decrease of the mixing time in a serpentine microreactor is demonstrated. Unlike our previous reports dealing with capillarity flow studies, the present paper relies on hydrodynamic pumping experiments, that allow us to both develop a theoretical model for the understanding of the involved phenomena and demonstrate a successful microfluidic mixing application. All of this is relevant in the perspective of developing microobject-based methods to overcome microscale processes purely dominated by diffusion with potential improvements of mass trasport in microfluidic platforms. \ua9 2019 Elsevier B.V

Oceanography 24(1):166–171, doi:10.5670/oceanog.2011.14.Although many oceanographic data products are now considered operational, continued dialogue between data producers and their user communities is still needed. The fisheries and environmental science communities have often been criticized for their lack of multidisciplinarity, and it is not clear whether recent developments in operational oceanographic products are addressing these needs. The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) Working Group on Operational Oceanographic products for Fisheries and Environment (WGOOFE) identified a potential mismatch between user requirements and the perception of requirements by the providers. Through a questionnaire (98 respondents), WGOOFE identified some of these issues. Although products of physical variables were in higher demand, several biological parameters scored in the top 10 rankings. Users placed specific focus on historic time series products with monthly or annual resolution and updating on similar time scales. A significant percentage requested access to numerical data rather than graphical output. While the outcomes of this survey challenge our views of operational oceanography, several initiatives are already attempting to close the gap between user requirements and products available

    La psichiatria di consultazione e collegamento nell’ospedale generale: l’esperienza perugina

    Objective - This study describes the Consultation-Liaison Service of the Perugia University and investigates the significant associations between a many variables of the assessed population. Results - During the time from July 2008 to June 2009, 722 consultations were performed at the general hospital in Perugia. First examinations were 605. Most consultations involved European patients (95,2%) of female gender (56.3%); mean age was 55.77 (SD ± 21.27). Emergencies were 22.5%; one fifth of patients were not informed of having been referred to our service and half of interventions were requested by departments of internal medicine. The primary reasons for the referral were depression (18.6%), unexplained physical symptoms (12.3%) and anxiety (10.4%); most patients were already taking psychotropic medication before our intervention (58.8%).The significant associations are the following: associations between gender and social status (p < 0.01), social condition (p < 0.01), work (p < 0.01) and advice about the need of the consultation (p < 0.05). The area (medical, surgical and specialized area) are related with the advice (p < 0.05), the reason (p < 0.01) and the type of the consultation (p < 0.01), the diagnostic explanations (p < 0.01), the liaison investigations (p < 0.01) and, at last, with the longrange plan after discharge (p < 0.01)

    Characterization and Performance of PADME's Cherenkov-Based Small-Angle Calorimeter

    The PADME experiment, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF), in Italy, will search for invisible decays of the hypothetical dark photon via the process e+eγAe^+e^-\rightarrow \gamma A', where the AA' escapes detection. The dark photon mass range sensitivity in a first phase will be 1 to 24 MeV. We report here on measurement and simulation studies of the performance of the Small-Angle Calorimeter, a component of PADME's detector dedicated to rejecting 2- and 3-gamma backgrounds. The crucial requirement is a timing resolution of less than 200 ps, which is satisfied by the choice of PbF2_2 crystals and the newly released Hamamatsu R13478UV photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). We find a timing resolution of 81 ps (with double-peak separation resolution of 1.8 ns) and a single-crystal energy resolution of 5.7%/E\sqrt{E} with light yield of 2.07 photo-electrons per MeV, using 100 to 400 MeV electrons at the Beam Test Facility of LNF. We also propose the investigation of a two-PMT solution coupled to a single PbF2_2 crystal for higher-energy applications, which has potentially attractive features.Comment: 12 pages, 19 figures. v2: added section on radiation damage studie

    Verocytotoxin-Producing Escherichia coli O26 in raw water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) milk products in Italy

    Escherichia coli 026 is known as a verocytotoxin-producing E. coli (VTEC) organism that causes severe foodborne diseases such as hemorrhagic colitis and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Although cattle are the most important reservoir of VTEC, only a few reports on the role of water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) as a reservoir of VTEC and on the presence of these organisms in their milk are available. However, in Southern Italy, where water buffalo are intensively reared, an outbreak of hemolytic uremic syndrome due to E. coli 026 has recently been reported, in which the consumption of typical dairy products was considered to be a common risk factor. The aims of this work were to assess the prevalence of E. coli 026 in raw water buffalo milk, to characterize the virulence gene profiles of the isolates, and to evaluate their phenotypic antimicrobial resistance pattern. Of 160 analyzed samples, 1 (0.6%) tested positive for E. coli 026, and the isolate showed the stx1+ lstx2+leae-lhlyA+ genotypic profile. The strain showed resistance against glycopeptides, macrolides, and penicillins. The presence of VTEC organisms in raw water buffalo milk could be considered to be a potential threat to consumers; however, the strict adherence to the processes used in the preparation of the most common buffalo dairy products could strongly mitigate the foodborne risk.     Growth hormone- and pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy evoke different responses to ischemia-reperfusion and mechanical stretch.

    Objective. To compare the molecular, histological, and functional characteristics of growth hormone (GH)- and pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophy, and their responses to ischemia-reperfusion and mechanical stretch. Design. Four groups of male Wistar rats were studied: aortic banding (n = 24, AB) or sham (n = 24, controls) for 10 weeks, and GH treatment (n = 24; 3.5 mg/kg/day, GH) or placebo (n = 24, controls) for 4 weeks. At 13 weeks, the rats were randomly subjected to: (i) assessment of basal left ventricular mRNA expression of sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium-ATPase (SERCA-2), phospholamban (PLB), and Na+-Ca2+ exchanger (NCX) and collagen volume fraction (CVF) (Protocol A, 8 rats in each group); (ii) left ventricular no-flow ischemia with simultaneous evaluation of intracellular Ca2+ handling and ATP, phosphocreatine (PCr) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) content (Protocol B, 12 rats in each group),- or (iii) left ventricular mechanical stretch for 40 min with assessment of tumor necrosis-alpha (TNF-alpha) mRNA (Protocol C, 4 rats in each group). Protocol B and C were carried out in a Langendorff apparatus. Results. In Protocol A. no difference was found as to myocardial mRNA content of Ca2+ regulating proteins and CVF in GH animals vs controls. In contrast. in the AB group, myocardial mRNA expression of SERCA-2 and PLB was downregulated while that of NCX and CVF were increased vs. controls (p < 0.05). In Protocol B, recovery of left ventricular function was significantly decreased in AB vs GH goups and controls and this was associated with 1.6-fold increase in intracellular Ca2+ overload during reperfusion (p < 0.05). Baseline ATP content was similar in the four study groups, whereas PCr and Pi was lower in AB vs GH rats and controls. However, the time courses of high-energy phosphate metabolic changes did not differ during ischemia and reperfusion in the four study groups. In Protocol C, no detectable TNF-alpha mRNA level was found in the left ventricular myocardium of GH treated rats and controls at baseline, while a modest expression was noted in AB animals. Mechanical stretch resulted in de novo myocardial TNF-a mRNA expression in GH group and controls, which was dramatically increased in AB animals (approximate to 5-fold above baseline, p < 0.001). Conclusions. The data show that cardiac hypertrophy activated by short-term GH treatment confers cardioprotection compared with pressure overload with regard to molecular and histological characteristics, and responses to ischemia-reperfusion and mechanical stretch
