Scientific research in hospitality studies in Brazil: challenges to finding a theoretical framework

This paper seeks to present the systematisation of information in hospitality studies, as generated by an analysis of 227 dissertations submitted to the Master’s Programme in Hospitality Studies at the University of Anhembi Morumbi, as well as 18 doctoral dissertations and 58 master’s dissertations submitted to other stricto sensu programmes in the country between 2004 and 2013. The paper intends to typify the contents of this scientific production, considering the theoretic base developed in Brazil and other countries. The documentary research analysed the contents of the dissertations based on author, title, abstract, keywords, and year of submission; it also arranged the studies according to sectors, domains and dimensions of the hospitality field. Results demonstrate a low incidence of studies in the virtual and domestic domains; tourism and lodging industries as the principal sectors covered in the period in question; and social and economic dimensions as the most discussed. The paper indicates the need for in-depth studies to analyse the methodological strategies and review bibliography used in production of the scientific materials, and the necessity for increased private sector funding of academic research. It highlights the importance of a critical approach to hospitality research that may enable the evolution of programmes in hospitality and tourism studies.Keywords: Hospitality, scientific research, master’s dissertations, theoretical categories, Brazi

Pesquisa em Turismo nas universidades brasileiras

Estudo sobre a pesquisa acadêmica em Turismo (dissertações e teses), produzida em instituições de ensino superior brasileiras, visando o seu levantamento, sistematização e análise. Com base em bibliografia, apresentam-se aspectos básicos do pensamento internacional e da realidade brasileira do Turismo como área de estudos acadêmicos. Descreve e analisa o conjunto de 55 dissertações e teses brasileiras em Turismo produzidas de 1975 a 1992, identificando suas principais caracteristicas e recomendando ações para o seu desenvolvimento.Study of the academic research in Tourism issues in Brazilian universities, having as scope a survey systematization and analysis. Based in bibliography, some basic aspects of the international thought and the Brazilian actual stage of Tourism as academic studies area are presented. A set of 55 theses about Tourism, written from 1975 to 1992 are described and analyzed, identifying its main characteristics. Actions to promote the development of research to improve Brazilian Tourism are also recommended

Realidade versus necessidades da pesquisa turística no Brasil

Este artigo enfoca a pesquisa científica em Turismo no Brasil, procurando conciliar as preocupações acadêmicas com a prática empresarial. Baseia-se na revisão da literatura sobre pesquisa científica e empreendimentos turísticos, na análise documental das teses brasileiras e nas opiniões de pesquisadores acadêmicos, empresários e profissionais, obtidas através da aplicação de questionários e entrevistas em São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e Salvador. Sintetiza os principais resultados sobre a realidade e as necessidades da pesquisa turística no Brasil, apresenta propostas para a valorização da pesquisa e do pesquisador turístico, e indica prioridades temáticas para futuras pesquisas na área relacionadas às forças globais emergentes que afetarão a sociedade no próximo Milênio.This article emphasizes the scientific tourism research in Brazil, conciliting the academics concerns with the practical enterprising activities. It was based onscientific research literature and touristic undertakings revisions; in documental thesis analysis and in the opinions of academic researchers, tourism entrepeneurs and area professionals. The information related in this study was taken through questionnaire apllications and personal enterviews realized in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e Salvador. lt introduces proposals for the valorization of scientific research and touristic researchers, and it indicates for thematics priorities for the future works research related to the emergent global strength, which will impact our society in the next Millenium

Crônica de eventos: IV Associação Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-graduação em Turismo - ANPTUR 2007

O IV Seminário da Associação Nacional de Pesquisa e Pós-Graduação em Turismo - ANPTUR 2007, realizado em São Paulo e organizado pela Universidade Anhembi Morumbi, deu seqüência a importantes iniciativas: o I e II Seminário (2002 e 2005), organizados pela Universidade do Vale do Itajaí, e o III Seminário, organizado pela Universidade de Caxias do Sul. Esta quarta edição do Seminário teve por objetivo reunir a comunidade científica para análise e discussão do tema “Pesquisa em Turismo e Hospitalidade: Configuração do Campo Científico” em suas diversas interfaces. No Pré-Evento foram realizadas as Oficinas de Estudo, o Encontro de Doutores e a Reunião da Diretoria Executiva da ANPTUR, esta restrita aos seus membros. O Evento propriamente dito iniciou-se com a Mesa Redonda sobre o tema central, que norteou a apresentação e discussão dos papers nas Sessões dos Grupos de Trabalho, além da Reunião de Editores de Periódicos Científicos e de Pesquisadores-Líderes de Grupos de Pesquisa. No final houve a entrega do “Prêmio Tese ANPTUR Destaque 2006” e homenageou-se o “Pesquisador Turístico Destaque 2006”. No Pós-Evento realizou-se a Assembléia Geral da ANPTUR e, opcionalmente, os participantes realizaram passeios turísticos pela cidade de São Paulo.
