    Space industrialization: A national perspective

    Space industrialization (or commercialization) has the potential to be a major player in America's space program. If this potential is to be realized, however, industrialization efforts must be considered within the context of the other major portions of the space program: shuttle, space station, and civil remote sensing. Further, development efforts must be based upon a sound scientific and technical understanding of the products and processes, and there must be a trained cadre of dedicated individuals willing to devote time and effort to this effort. There remain considerable risks and uncertainties. Given all this, the best path to follow would seem to be a long term, balanced commitment, emphasizing government, industry, and academia partnerships. Several points are addressed: (1) the place of space industrialization in the overall national space program; (2) the meaning of space industrialization with respect to the historic, national aims of space; and (3) specifically what is being industrialized

    We study the λϕ4\lambda \phi^4 field theory in a flat Robertson-Walker space-time using the functional Sch\"odinger picture. We introduce a simple Gaussian approximation to analyze the time evolution of pure states and we establish the renormalizability of the approximation. We also show that the energy-momentum tensor in this approximation is finite once we consider the usual mass and coupling constant renormalizations.Comment: Revtex file, 19 pages, no figures.     Quantum Evolution of Inhomogeneities in Curved Space

    We obtain the renormalized equations of motion for matter and semi-classical gravity in an inhomogeneous space-time. We use the functional Schrodinger picture and a simple Gaussian approximation to analyze the time evolution of the λϕ4\lambda\phi^4 model, and we establish the renormalizability of this non-perturbative approximation. We also show that the energy-momentum tensor in this approximation is finite once we consider the usual mass and coupling constant renormalizations, without the need of further geometrical counter-terms.Comment: 22 page

    Modeling one-dimensional island growth with mass-dependent detachment rates

    We study one-dimensional models of particle diffusion and attachment/detachment from islands where the detachment rates gamma(m) of particles at the cluster edges increase with cluster mass m. They are expected to mimic the effects of lattice mismatch with the substrate and/or long-range repulsive interactions that work against the formation of long islands. Short-range attraction is represented by an overall factor epsilon<<1 in the detachment rates relatively to isolated particle hopping rates [epsilon ~ exp(-E/T), with binding energy E and temperature T]. We consider various gamma(m), from rapidly increasing forms such as gamma(m) ~ m to slowly increasing ones, such as gamma(m) ~ [m/(m+1)]^b. A mapping onto a column problem shows that these systems are zero-range processes, whose steady states properties are exactly calculated under the assumption of independent column heights in the Master equation. Simulation provides island size distributions which confirm analytic reductions and are useful whenever the analytical tools cannot provide results in closed form. The shape of island size distributions can be changed from monomodal to monotonically decreasing by tuning the temperature or changing the particle density rho. Small values of the scaling variable X=epsilon^{-1}rho/(1-rho) favour the monotonically decreasing ones. However, for large X, rapidly increasing gamma(m) lead to distributions with peaks very close to and rapidly decreasing tails, while slowly increasing gamma(m) provide peaks close to /2$ and fat right tails.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

    Prototyping an app to assist game-based activities: co-design using a qualitative approach

    Qualitative approaches have gained prominence in the scientific community being important to develop studies that use them, namely to assist prototyping stages. This article seeks to contribute to the deepening of knowledge in the field of cataloging and evaluating educational games and describes the process of designing an application's wireframes. This allowed the gathering of the app’s functional requirements, using a qualitative methodological approach through co-design: a focus group of eight experts from different fields such as geography, sociology, science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics was constituted. Considering the Communicative Design Paradigm and the Octalysis gamification model, the functional requirements were grouped, after analysis, into six domains – Games, News, Interaction, User, Evaluation and Language. The prototype design emerged from this process enabling the design of 47 wireframes.in publicatio

    Phases of granular segregation in a binary mixture

    We present results from an extensive experimental investigation into granular segregation of a shallow binary mixture in which particles are driven by frictional interactions with the surface of a vibrating horizontal tray. Three distinct phases of the mixture are established viz; binary gas (unsegregated), segregation liquid and segregation crystal. Their ranges of existence are mapped out as a function of the system's primary control parameters using a number of measures based on Voronoi tessellation. We study the associated transitions and show that segregation can be suppressed is the total filling fraction of the granular layer, CC, is decreased below a critical value, CcC_{c}, or if the dimensionless acceleration of the driving, γ\gamma, is increased above a value γc\gamma_{c}.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Phys.
