Produce Basket: The Effect of Experiential Fraction Pedagogy on Preservice Teacher Learning

    Get PDF
Formal notation of fractions is a critical stumbling block for students, impeding their progress to acquire flexible number sense beyond integers and greatly impacting their success in algebra. Conflicting and vague definitions of fractions are a major cause of confusion and frustration among students and their teachers. A team consisting of a veteran fourth-grade teacher, a professional development leader/university instructor, a math educator, and a mathematician developed an experiential learning module called Produce Basket (PB) for elementary grades fraction learning. Since its inception 5 years ago, PB has been taught in about a dozen elementary classrooms in north central Ohio and is woven into the preservice teaching program at Ohio State University Mansfield. Given the high stakes and strong claims for this approach, there is now a pressing need to assess the strengths and weaknesses of Produce Basket’s approach. The aim of this article is to report research conducted with two classes (total n = 22) of preservice teachers that were instructed over an 8-week period with PB. The study finds initial evidence that PB improves student understanding of fractions. The authors used both quantitative and qualitative instruments to measure student understanding

Produce Basket: The Development of PB module for improving fraction learning

Formal notation of fractions is a critical stumbling block for students, impeding their progress to acquire flexible number sense beyond integers and greatly impacting their success in algebra. Conflicting and vague definitions of fractions are a major cause of confusion and frustration among students and their teachers. Although several authors have identified this lack of clarity and have attempted to help teachers understand fractions better, a successful curriculum unit has not appeared that teachers and students can both use to make the meaning of fractions mathematically precise. To address this lack, a team consisting of a veteran fourth-grade teacher, a professional development leader/university instructor, a math educator, and a mathematician developed an experiential learning module called Produce Basket (PB) for elementary grades fraction learning. The module is a graduated set of games and activities around the metaphor of a basket (standing for "whole") that enables teachers to scaffold the precise definition of a fraction. The aim of this article is to describe the PB learning module with its roots in Bob Moses and the Algebra Project. Additionally, this article will discuss the theory of action that underpins the design of the module

Gastrointestinal symptoms of infantile colic and their change after light needling of acupuncture: a case series study of 913 infants

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Infantile colic is a common painful clinical condition associated with signs of distended intestines and an increase in colon peristalsis. However, clinical documentation of observed gastrointestinal functions in the condition is still lacking. Even though the ailment is common, no clear treatment guidelines exist. While acupuncture with minimal stimulation has been shown to be effective in reducing crying behaviour of infants suffering from colic, the documented effect of acupuncture on gastrointestinal function in children with infantile colic is scarce. This case series study aims to document the symptoms of routinely rated gastrointestinal function and the changes in these symptoms after minimal acupuncture in a larger group of children with infantile colic.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study included 913 infants with normal weights, and lengths at birth. The infants' mean age was 5.4 weeks when the observations started, and had colic symptoms since two weeks after birth. Light needling stimulation of the acupuncture point LI4 was performed for 10-20 seconds bilaterally on a daily basis for a mean of 6.2 consecutive days. A questionnaire with verbal rating scales for the parents' evaluation was used before and after the treatment period.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Before treatment the infants were assessed by the parents in terms of 'often have inflated stomachs' (99%) and 'seldom drool' (76%), 'regurgitate' (53%) and 'belch' (62%). Moreover, the reported frequency of defecation was 5-8 times per day (64%), with a yellowish-green colour (61%) and with a water-thin consistency (74%). After treatment, the variables of inflated stomachs, drooling and regurgitating were systematically changed, and rated by the parents as occurring 'sometimes' while belching was rated as occurring 'often' and the frequency of defecation was reduced to 1-4 times/day with a mustard yellow colour and a gruel-like consistency. The parents also rated their impression of the infants' general colic symptoms including crying behaviour as much ameliorated in 76% of the cases.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The results of the present study show that minimal acupuncture at LI4 in infantile colic is an effective and easy treatment procedure that, furthermore, is reported to be without serious side effects.</p

    Eesti näitlejate ootused teatrikriitikale

Bakalaureusetöö eesmärgiks on anda ülevaade Eesti teatrikriitika seisust 21. sajandil ja teada saada, mis on Eesti näitlejate jaoks teatrikriitika. Bakalaureusetöö annab ülevaate teatrikriitika seisust Eesti kriitikute arvamuste põhjal 2000ndate algusest ilmunud metakriitikat vaadeldes, kriitikakanalid jaotatakse töös seitsmesse kategooriasse - „Teatrielu“ kogumikud, kultuurilehed, päeva- ja nädalalehed, internetiportaalid, teatrikriitika blogid ning raadio- ja telesaated. Bakalaureusetöö teiseks eesmärgiks on teada saada, kuidas defineerivad Eesti näitlejad teatrikriitikat, mida nad sellelt ootavad, kuidas kriitikute tagasisidet väärtustatakse ja kui hästi on näitlejad Eesti kriitikamaastikuga kursis

Comparison of Therapeutic Exercise Accuracy During Completion of a Home Exercise Program Using the Exercise Tutor Versus a Written Home Exercise Program

Exercise is powerful in rehabilitation and prevention of disability; however, patient adherence to home exercises is difficult, learning new movements requires a great deal of practice, and incorrectly performed exercises are ineffective or even dangerous. We have developed a system comprised of a Kinect device with wearable inertial sensors to capture, record, and process the exerciser’s movement while concurrently providing targeted feedback to guide correct exercise completion. This pilot study allowed us to perform initial testing of this system, specifically, the effectiveness of this system in improving exercise accuracy, with and without the addition of inertial sensors to the Kinect camera feedback, as compared to a traditional written home exercise program. Twenty-four participants (18-48 years old, 14 female) completed one of three training types: a written exercise program, Kinect feedback only, or combined inertial sensor and Kinect feedback. All subjects completed a pre-test, three training sessions, and a post-test with the assigned feedback type, with movement accuracy as the outcome. These data are in analysis; therefore, previous data from the pilot for this project are presented here. Initial analysis indicates that kinect and inertial sensor feedback are better for different movement types, and are superior to a written program.https://engagedscholarship.csuohio.edu/u_poster_2014/1010/thumbnail.jp
