    Self-contained in-vacuum in situ thin film stress measurement tool

    A fully self-contained in-vacuum device for measuring thin film stress in situ is presented. The stress was measured by measuring the curvature of a cantilever on which the thin film was deposited. For this, a dual beam laser deflectometer was used. All optics and electronics needed to perform the measurement are placed inside a vacuum-compatible vessel with the form factor of the substrate holders of the deposition system used. The stand-alone nature of the setup allows the vessel to be moved inside a deposition system independently of optical or electronic feedthroughs while measuring continuously. A Mo/Si multilayer structure was analyzed to evaluate the performance of the setup. A radius of curvature resolution of 270 km was achieved. This allows small details of the stress development to be resolved, such as the interlayer formation between the layers and the amorphous-to-crystalline transition of the molybdenum which occurs at around 2 nm. The setup communicates with an external computer via a Wi-Fi connection. This wireless connection allows remote control over the acquisition and the live feedback of the measured stress. In principle, the vessel can act as a general metrology platform and add measurement capabilities to deposition setups with no modification to the deposition system

    Spectral control of high-harmonic generation via drive laser pulse shaping in a wide-diameter capillary

    We experimentally investigate spectral control of high-harmonic generation in a wide-diameter (508 μm) capillary that allows using significantly lower gas pressures coupled with elevated drive laser energies to achieve higher harmonic energies. Using phase shaping to change the linear chirp of the drive laser pulses, we observe wavelength tuning of the high-harmonic output to both larger and smaller values. Comparing tuning via the gas pressure with the amount of blue shift in the transmitted drive laser spectrum, we conclude that both adiabatic and non-adiabatic effects cause pulse-shaping induced tuning of high harmonics. We obtain a fractional wavelength tuning, Δλ/λ, in the range from −0.007 to + 0.01, which is comparable to what is achieved with standard capillaries of smaller diameter and higher pressures

    Coherent control of high harmonic generation in a large-volume capillary for seeding of free-electron lasers

    FEL-1 at FERMI@Elettra is a seeded free-electron laser using sub-harmonic seeding to generate soft x-rays down to 10 nm. The current seed laser, a standard solid-state laser followed by frequency quadrupling in nonlinear crystals, has a minimum wavelength of 200 nm. Injecting much shorter seed-laser wavelengths, for which high-harmonic generation (HHG) is of high promise, can shorten the laser output wavelength significantly. However, the minimum seed pulse energy required is not readily available with standard approaches to HHG. To increase the energy available in a particular harmonic for seeding, we use a gas-filled capillary with a large diameter (500 μm), pumped by an 8 mJ, 35 fs Ti:Sapphire laser. A wide capillary allows a large gas volume for HHG, thereby increasing the output energy. We also investigate the coherent control of HHG by shaping the spectral phase of the drive laser using an acousto-optic programmable dispersive filter. Here, we use a learning algorithm with the objective to simultaneously tune and selectively enhance an individual harmonic order. We present first results including pressure dependent harmonic output energy, spectrum and beam stability, as these are important for seeding of FELs. Further, we discuss initial experiments with coherent control that has shown selective enhancement up to a factor of 10

    Performance of Tablet Splitters, Crushers, and Grinders in Relation to Personalised Medication with Tablets

    Swallowing problems and the required dose adaptations needed to obtain optimal pharmacotherapy may be a hurdle in the use of tablets in daily clinical practice. Tablet splitting, crushing, or grinding is often applied to personalise medication, especially for the elderly and children. In this study, the performance of different types of (commercially available) devices was studied. Included were splitters, screwcap crushers, manual grinders, and electric grinders. Unscored tablets without active ingredient were prepared, with a diameter of 9 and 13 mm and a hardness of 100–220 N. Tablets were split into two parts and the difference in weight was measured. The time needed to pulverise the tablets (crush time) was recorded. The residue remaining in the device (loss) was measured. The powder was sieved to obtain a particle fraction >600 µm and <600 µm. The median particle size and particle size distribution of the later fraction were determined using laser diffraction analysis. Splitting tablets into two equal parts appeared to be difficult with the devices tested. Most screwcap grinders yielded a coarse powder containing larger chunks. Manual and especially electric grinders produced a finer powder, making it suitable for administration via an enteral feeding tube as well as for use in individualised preparations such as capsules. In conclusion, for domestic and incidental use, a screwcap crusher may provide sufficient size reduction, while for the more demanding regular use in hospitals and nursing residences, a manual or electric grinder is preferred

    Discovery of Salmonella trehalose phospholipids reveals functional convergence with mycobacteria.

    Salmonella species are among the world's most prevalent pathogens. Because the cell wall interfaces with the host, we designed a lipidomics approach to reveal pathogen-specific cell wall compounds. Among the molecules differentially expressed between Salmonella Paratyphi and S. Typhi, we focused on lipids that are enriched in S. Typhi, because it causes typhoid fever. We discovered a previously unknown family of trehalose phospholipids, 6,6'-diphosphatidyltrehalose (diPT) and 6-phosphatidyltrehalose (PT). Cardiolipin synthase B (ClsB) is essential for PT and diPT but not for cardiolipin biosynthesis. Chemotyping outperformed clsB homology analysis in evaluating synthesis of diPT. DiPT is restricted to a subset of Gram-negative bacteria: large amounts are produced by S. Typhi, lower amounts by other pathogens, and variable amounts by Escherichia coli strains. DiPT activates Mincle, a macrophage activating receptor that also recognizes mycobacterial cord factor (6,6'-trehalose dimycolate). Thus, Gram-negative bacteria show convergent function with mycobacteria. Overall, we discovered a previously unknown immunostimulant that is selectively expressed among medically important bacterial species

    Time Since Stroke Onset, Quantitative Collateral Score, and Functional Outcome After Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In patients with ischemic stroke undergoing endovascular treatment (EVT), time to treatment and collateral status are important prognostic factors and may be correlated. We aimed to assess the relation between time to CT angiography (CTA) and a quantitatively determined collateral score and to assess whether the collateral score modified the relation between time to recanalization and functional outcome. METHODS: We analyzed data from patients with acute ischemic stroke included in the Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial of Endovascular Treatment for Acute Ischemic Stroke Registry between 2014 and 2017, who had a carotid terminus or M1 occlusion and were treated with EVT within 6.5 hours of symptom onset. A quantitative collateral score (qCS) was determined from baseline CTA using a validated automated image analysis algorithm. We also determined a 4-point visual collateral score (vCS). Multivariable regression models were used to assess the relations between time to imaging and the qCS and between the time to recanalization and functional outcome (90-day modified Rankin Scale score). An interaction term (time to recanalization × qCS) was entered in the latter model to test whether the qCS modifies this relation. Sensitivity analyses were performed using the vCS. RESULTS: We analyzed 1,813 patients. The median time from symptom onset to CTA was 91 minutes (interquartile range [IQR] 65–150 minutes), and the median qCS was 49% (IQR 25%–78%). Longer time to CTA was not associated with the log-transformed qCS (adjusted β per 30 minutes, 0.002, 95% CI −0.006 to 0.011). Both a higher qCS (adjusted common odds ratio [acOR] per 10% increase: 1.06, 95% CI 1.03–1.09) and shorter time to recanalization (acOR per 30 minutes: 1.17, 95% CI 1.13–1.22) were independently associated with a shift toward better functional outcome. The qCS did not modify the relation between time to recanalization and functional outcome (p for interaction: 0.28). Results from sensitivity analyses using the vCS were similar. DISCUSSION: In the first 6.5 hours of ischemic stroke caused by carotid terminus or M1 occlusion, the collateral status is unaffected by time to imaging, and the benefit of a shorter time to recanalization is independent of baseline collateral status

Our team gathers three Dutch technical universities, namely Delft University of Technology, Eindhoven University of Technology and University of Twente, and the commercial company Philips. We contribute an adult-size humanoid robot TUlip, which is designed based on theory of the limit cycle walking developed in our earlier research. The key of our theory is that stable periodic walking gaits can be achieved even without high-bandwidth robot position control. Our control approach is based on simultaneous position and force control. For accurate force control, we make use of the Series Elastic Actuation. The control software of TUlip is based on the Darmstadt’s RoboFrame, and it runs on a PC104 computer with Linux Xenomai. The vision system consists of two wide-angle cameras, each interfaced with a dedicated Blackfin processor running vision algorithms, and a wireless networking interface
