    Adiabatic polaron dynamics and Josephson effect in a superconducting molecular quantum dot

    We study the Josephson current through a resonant level coupled to a vibration mode (local Holstein model) in the adiabatic limit of low oscillator frequency. A semiclassical theory is then appropriate and allows us to consider the oscillator dynamics within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for arbitrary electron-vibration couplings. The resulting Fokker-Planck equation has been solved in the most relevant underdamped limit and yields the oscillator distribution function and the Josephson current. Remarkably, a transition from single-well to double-well behavior of the effective oscillator potential surface is possible and can be tuned by variation of the superconducting phase difference. The Josephson current is shown to be only weakly affected by the electron-vibration coupling due to strong phonon localization near the bottom of the potential surface.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, final version to appear in Phys.     Ultrastructural analysis of chromatin in meiosis I plus II of rye (Secale cereale L.)

    Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proves to be an appropriate technique for imaging chromatin organization in meiosis I and II of rye (Secale cereale) down to a resolution of a few nanometers. It could be shown for the first time that organization of basic structural elements (coiled and parallel fibers, chromomeres) changes dramatically during the progression to metaphase I and II. Controlled loosening with proteinase K (after fixation with glutaraldehyde) provides an enhanced insight into chromosome architecture even of highly condensed stages of meiosis. By selective staining with platinum blue, DNA content and distribution can be visualized within compact chromosomes as well as in a complex arrangement of fibers. Chromatin interconnecting threads, which are typically observed in prophase I between homologous and non-homologous chromosomes, stain clearly for DNA. In zygotene transversion of chromatid strands to their homologous counterparts becomes evident. In pachytene segments of synapsed and non-synapsed homologs alternate. At synapsed regions pairing is so intimate that homologous chromosomes form one filament of structural entity. Chiasmata are characterized by chromatid strands which traverse from one homolog to its counterpart. Bivalents are characteristically fused at their telomeric regions.     Spontaneous bleeding in a patient with malignant lymphoma: A case of acquired hemophilia

    Background: Acquired hemophilia is a rare condition which can be associated with lymphoproliferative disease. Case Report: Eleven yea rs after the diagnosis of immunocytoma had been made, a 72-year-old man developed a high-titer factor VIII inhibitor. At this time, the lymphoma was without significant progress and there was no paraprotein in the serum. Partial thromboplastin time (PTT) was 83 a, factor-VIII clotting activity was <1%, and inhibitor level was 50.4 Bethesda units. The patient presented with spontaneous hematomas in the skin and musculature of the extremities. Following combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, vincristine and prednisolone (COP), there was a prompt disappearance of the inhibitor and normalization of coagulation; however, the patient developed serious infectious complications. When the inhibitor recurred he was treated with low-dose cyclophosphamide and prednisolone. This time there was a more delayed response, but the inhibitor disappeared again completely. Two months after cessation of therapy, there was again relapse. Conclusion: Causal relationship between lymphoma and acquired hemophilia remains speculative. At least in some cases of factor VIII inhibitors associated with malignant disease, immunosuppressive therapy may be sufficient to suppress the inhibitor

    Five different musearlnie receptor subtypes ean be distinguished by the differenees in their amino aeid sequence, the eoupled signal transduetion system, pharmaeologieal binding properties and aetivation of ionie fluxes. The present study served to eharaeterize the binding profile of musearlnie receptors in human eolon eareinoma eells (HT-29) using seleetive musearlnie antagonists. The affinities of the compounds were eompared with their poteney to inhibit cholinergieally-aetivated phosphoinositide metabolism. Pirenzepine displaced [3^3H]N-methyl-scopolamine binding and inhibited inositolphosphate (IP) release with potencies typieal of those of non-M1_1 receptors. The M3_3 subtype-selective antagonists sila-hexocyelium and hexahydro-sila-difenidol bad high affinity to the musearlnie reeeptors in HT-29 cells (K0 = 3.1 nM and 27 nM, respectively) and inhibited IP release at nanomolar concentrations. The M2_2 receptor antagonists, AF-DX 116 and methoctramine, had low antimusearinic poteneies. Our results demonstrate that HT-29 human colon earcinoma cells contain an apparently pure population of M3_3 receptors. These cells could serve as a model system for further investigations coneerning regulatory and signal transduction mechanisms associated with glandular muscarinic M3_3 receptors

    Die Synthese des selektiven Antimuskarinikums Cyclohexylpheny\{3-piperidinopropyl)sila· nol (1 b) wird beschrieben. 1 b wurde - ausgehend von (3·Chlorpropyl)trimethoxysilan - durch eine vierstufige Reaktionsfolge erhalten und als Hydrochlorid 2b mit einer Gesamtausbeute von etwa 45°/o isoliert. - 1 b ist aufgrund seiner großen pharmakologischen Se· lektivität zu einer Standardsubstanz in der experimentellen Pharmakologie bei der Differenzierung von Muskarinrezeptoren geworden.The synthesis of thc selective antimuscarinic agent cyclohexylphenyl(3-piperidinopropyl)silanol (1 b) is described. Starting with (3-chloropropyl)trimethoxysilane, I b was obtained by four reaction steps and isolated as hydrochloride 2b with a total yield of about 45°/o. - Because of its high pharmacological selectivity 1 b has become a reference drug in experimental pharmacology for the differentiation of muscarinic rcceptors

    No evidence of skin infection with Chlamydia pneumoniae in patients with cutaneous T cell lymphoma

    Recently, Chlamydia pneumoniae-specific DNA and antigens were reported in the skin of patients with Mycosis fungoides (MF), the most common form of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. In order to revalidate these data we analyzed skin sections of patients with MF for the expression of three different chlamydial antigens and C. pneumoniae DNA by immunohistochemistry and PCR according to previously described protocolls. Neither C. pneumoniae-specific DNA sequences nor antigens were detected in any of the skin biopses from 24 MF patients tested, suggesting that further studies are needed to establish any pathogenetic relevance of C. pneumoniae in MF

    Excitation of weakly bound Rydberg electrons by half-cycle pulses

    The interaction of a weakly bound Rydberg electron with an electromagnetic half-cycle pulse (HCP) is described with the help of a multidimensional semiclassical treatment. This approach relates the quantum evolution of the electron to its underlying classical dynamics. The method is nonperturbative and is valid for arbitrary spatial and temporal shapes of the applied HCP. On the basis of this approach angle- and energy-resolved spectra resulting from the ionization of Rydberg atoms by HCPs are analyzed. The different types of spectra obtainable in the sudden-impact approximation are characterized in terms of the appearing semiclassical scattering phenomena. Typical modifications of the spectra originating from finite pulse effects are discussed.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
