High stability amplifier
An electrical RF signal amplifier for providing high temperature stability and RF isolation and comprised of an integrated circuit voltage regulator, a single transistor, and an integrated circuit operational amplifier mounted on a circuit board such that passive circuit elements are located on side of the circuit board while the active circuit elements are located on the other side is described. The active circuit elements are embedded in a common heat sink so that a common temperature reference is provided for changes in ambient temperature. The single transistor and operational amplifier are connected together to form a feedback amplifier powered from the voltage regulator with transistor implementing primarily the desired signal gain while the operational amplifier implements signal isolation. Further RF isolation is provided by the voltage regulator which inhibits cross-talk from other like amplifiers powered from a common power supply. Input and output terminals consisting of coaxial connectors are located on the sides of a housing in which all the circuit components and heat sink are located
Nanosecond time transfer via shuttle laser ranging experiment
A method is described to use a proposed shuttle laser ranging experiment to transfer time with nanosecond precision. All that need be added to the original experiment are low cost ground stations and an atomic clock on the shuttle. It is shown that global time transfer can be accomplished with 1 ns precision and transfer up to distances of 2000 km can be accomplished with better than 100 ps precision
Svortices and the fundamental modes of the "snake instability": Possibility of observation in the gaseous Bose-Einstein Condensate
The connection between quantized vortices and dark solitons in a long and
thin, waveguide-like trap geometry is explored in the framework of the
non-linear Schr\"odinger equation. Variation of the transverse confinement
leads from the quasi-1D regime where solitons are stable to 2D (or 3D)
confinement where soliton stripes are subject to a transverse modulational
instability known as the ``snake instability''. We present numerical evidence
of a regime of intermediate confinement where solitons decay into single,
deformed vortices with solitonic properties, also called svortices, rather than
vortex pairs as associated with the ``snake'' metaphor. Further relaxing the
transverse confinement leads to production of 2 and then 3 vortices, which
correlates perfectly with a Bogoliubov-de Gennes stability analysis. The decay
of a stationary dark soliton (or, planar node) into a single svortex is
predicted to be experimentally observable in a 3D harmonically confined dilute
gas Bose-Einstein condensate.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Gill transcriptome response to changes in environmental calcium in the green spotted puffer fish
Abstract Background Calcium ion is tightly regulated in body fluids and for euryhaline fish, which are exposed to rapid changes in environmental [Ca2+], homeostasis is especially challenging. The gill is the main organ of active calcium uptake and therefore plays a crucial role in the maintenance of calcium ion homeostasis. To study the molecular basis of the short-term responses to changing calcium availability, the whole gill transcriptome obtained by Super Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SuperSAGE) of the euryhaline teleost green spotted puffer fish, Tetraodon nigroviridis, exposed to water with altered [Ca2+] was analysed. Results Transfer of T. nigroviridis from 10 ppt water salinity containing 2.9 mM Ca2+ to high (10 mM Ca2+ ) and low (0.01 mM Ca2+) calcium water of similar salinity for 2-12 h resulted in 1,339 differentially expressed SuperSAGE tags (26-bp transcript identifiers) in gills. Of these 869 tags (65%) were mapped to T. nigroviridis cDNAs or genomic DNA and 497 (57%) were assigned to known proteins. Thirteen percent of the genes matched multiple tags indicating alternative RNA transcripts. The main enriched gene ontology groups belong to Ca2+ signaling/homeostasis but also muscle contraction, cytoskeleton, energy production/homeostasis and tissue remodeling. K-means clustering identified co-expressed transcripts with distinct patterns in response to water [Ca2+] and exposure time. Conclusions The generated transcript expression patterns provide a framework of novel water calcium-responsive genes in the gill during the initial response after transfer to different [Ca2+]. This molecular response entails initial perception of alterations, activation of signaling networks and effectors and suggests active remodeling of cytoskeletal proteins during the initial acclimation process. Genes related to energy production and energy homeostasis are also up-regulated, probably reflecting the increased energetic needs of the acclimation response. This study is the first genome-wide transcriptome analysis of fish gills and is an important resource for future research on the short-term mechanisms involved in the gill acclimation responses to environmental Ca2+ changes and osmoregulation.Peer Reviewe
The NASA/GSFC hydrogen maser program: A review of recent data
Data is presented on the phase and frequency stability, over time periods extending to one week, of the new NR field operable hydrogen masers developed by the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and the older NX and NP field operable hydrogen masers developed by Goddard Space Flight Center and maintained and upgraded by Bendix Field Engineering Corporation (BFEC). Data is presented on the NR masers in the laboratory showing frequency stabilities well into the 10 to the -15th power range and phase stabilities well into the 100 ps range for periods of up to one day. Data is presented on upgraded NP masers in the laboratory showing that the frequency stability has been improved substantially to virtually the NR level. VLBI data is presented on the phase difference between NX-2 at Owens Valley, California and NR-2 at Fort Davis, Texas for a one week period showing, after removal of a constant frequency drift, a 350 ps RMS phase stability
Free Energy of an SU(2) Model of (2+1)-dimensional QCD in the Constant Condensate Background
Gluon and quark contributions to the thermodynamic potential (free energy) of
a (2+1)-dimensional QCD model at finite temperature in the background of a
constant homogeneous chromomagnetic field H combined with A_0 condensate are
calculated. The role of the tachyonic mode in the gluon energy spectrum is
discussed. A possibility of the free energy global minimum generation at

QuickXsort: Efficient Sorting with n log n - 1.399n +o(n) Comparisons on Average
In this paper we generalize the idea of QuickHeapsort leading to the notion
of QuickXsort. Given some external sorting algorithm X, QuickXsort yields an
internal sorting algorithm if X satisfies certain natural conditions.
With QuickWeakHeapsort and QuickMergesort we present two examples for the
QuickXsort-construction. Both are efficient algorithms that incur approximately
n log n - 1.26n +o(n) comparisons on the average. A worst case of n log n +
O(n) comparisons can be achieved without significantly affecting the average
case.
Furthermore, we describe an implementation of MergeInsertion for small n.
Taking MergeInsertion as a base case for QuickMergesort, we establish a
worst-case efficient sorting algorithm calling for n log n - 1.3999n + o(n)
comparisons on average. QuickMergesort with constant size base cases shows the
best performance on practical inputs: when sorting integers it is slower by
only 15% to STL-Introsort
Anisotropy of the space orientation of radio sources. I: The catalog
A catalog of the extended extragalactic radio sources consisting of 10461
objects is compiled based on the list of radio sources of the FIRST survey. A
total of 1801 objects are identified with galaxies and quasars of the SDSS
survey and the Veron-Veron catalog. The distribution of the position angles of
the axes of radio sources from the catalog is determined, and the probability
that this distribution is equiprobable is shown to be less then 10^(-7). This
result implies that at Z equal to or smaller then 0.5, spatial orientation of
the axes of radio sources is anisotropic at a statistically significant level.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Institutional Framework and Practice of Russian Science Diplomacy
The research deals with a relatively recent phenomenon of science diplomacy as a tool of Russian foreign policy. One of the science diplomacy tracks is 'diplomacy for science. The article investigates this track’s macroand micro-level practices to assess the overall effectiveness of Russian science diplomacy. The authors conducted an indepth analysis of primary sources and semi-structured interviews with academics and diplomats. They conclude that at the micro-level, 'diplomacy for science' is hindered by a lack of legal information on travel rules, poor consolidation of the ‘research diaspora,' and the absence of a regulatory framework to identify those eligible for consular and diplomatic support. A distrust in communication between scholars and diplomats further aggravates the uneven support for scientists across Russian diplomatic missions. At the macro-level, the institutional framework of scientific cooperation between Russia and other states appears vague, featuring non-binding memoranda of understanding and very few detailed agreements
Dark-Bright Solitons in Inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein Condensates
We investigate dark-bright vector solitary wave solutions to the coupled
non-linear Schr\"odinger equations which describe an inhomogeneous two-species
Bose-Einstein condensate. While these structures are well known in non-linear
fiber optics, we show that spatial inhomogeneity strongly affects their motion,
stability, and interaction, and that current technology suffices for their
creation and control in ultracold trapped gases. The effects of controllably
different interparticle scattering lengths, and stability against
