    Non-parametric comparison of histogrammed two-dimensional data distributions using the Energy Test

    When monitoring complex experiments, comparison is often made between regularly acquired histograms of data and reference histograms which represent the ideal state of the equipment. With the larger HEP experiments now ramping up, there is a need for automation of this task since the volume of comparisons could overwhelm human operators. However, the two-dimensional histogram comparison tools available in ROOT have been noted in the past to exhibit shortcomings. We discuss a newer comparison test for two-dimensional histograms, based on the Energy Test of Aslan and Zech, which provides more conclusive discrimination between histograms of data coming from different distributions than methods provided in a recent ROOT release.The Science and Technology Facilities Council, U

    Understanding the role of shame and its consequences in female hypersexual behaviours: A pilot study

    Background and aims: Hypersexuality and sexual addiction among females is a little understudied phenomenon. Shame is thought to be intrinsic to hypersexual behaviours, especially in women. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand both hypersexual behaviours and consequences of hypersexual behaviours and their respective contributions to shame in a British sample of females (n = 102). Methods: Data were collected online via Survey Monkey. Results: Results showed the Sexual Behaviour History (SBH) and the Hypersexual Disorder Questionnaire (HDQ) had significant positive correlation with scores on the Shame Inventory. The results indicated that hypersexual behaviours (HBI and HDQ) were able to predict a small percentage of the variability in shame once sexual orientation (heterosexual vs. non-heterosexual) and religious beliefs (belief vs. no belief) were controlled for. Results also showed there was no evidence that religious affiliation and/or religious beliefs had an influence on the levels of hypersexuality and consequences of sexual behaviours as predictors of shame. Conclusions: While women in the UK are rapidly shifting to a feminist way of thinking with or without technology, hypersexual disorder may often be misdiagnosed and misunderstood because of the lack of understanding and how it is conceptualised.     T219H and Tl35, two of the more vigorous chlorophyll-deficient types in the Genetic Type Collection, both have distinctly light green foliage through-out their life cycle. They are controlled by different genes since the Tl35 phenotype is caused by a homozygote, y9y9 (Probst, 1950), and the T219H phenotype by a heterozygote, Y11Y11 (Y11Y11 has a bright orange-yellow seedling-lethal phenotype) (Weber and Weiss, 1959). However, because of the similar phenotypes, it has been suggested that y9 and y11 may be multiple alleles at the same locus

    This paper presents the results of a computational study related to the path-geodesic correspondence in causal sets.     Constraints from 26^{26}Al Measurements on the Galaxy's Recent Global Star Formation Rate and Core Collapse Supernovae Rate

    Gamma-rays from the decay of 26^{26}Al offer a stringent constraint on the Galaxy's global star formation rate over the past million years, supplementing other methods for quantifying the recent Galactic star formation rate, such as equivalent widths of Hα\alpha emission. Advantages and disadvantages of using 26^{26}Al gamma-ray measurements as a tracer of the massive star formation rate are analyzed. Estimates of the Galactic 26^{26}Al mass derived from COMPTEL measurements are coupled with a simple, analytical model of the 26^{26}Al injection rate from massive stars and restrict the Galaxy's recent star formation rate to \hbox{5 ±\pm 4 M\sun yr1^{-1}}. In addition, we show that the derived 26^{26}Al mass implies a present day \hbox{Type II + Ib} supernovae rate of 3.4 ±\pm 2.8 per century, which seems consistent with other independent estimates of the Galactic core collapse supernova rate. If some independent measure of the massive star initial mass function or star formation rate or \hbox{Type II + Ib} supernovae rate were to become available (perhaps through estimates of the Galactic 60^{60}Fe mass), then a convenient way to restrain, or possibly determine, the other parameters is presented.Comment: 11 pages including 1 figure, ApJ in pres

    We formulate a method of computing invariant 1-forms and structure equations of symmetry pseudo-groups of differential equations based on Cartan's method of equivalence and the moving coframe method introduced by Fels and Olver. Our apparoach does not require a preliminary computation of infinitesimal defining systems, their analysis and integration, and uses differentiation and linear algebra operations only.     Long-time behaviour of discretizations of the simple pendulum equation

    We compare the performance of several discretizations of the simple pendulum equation in a series of numerical experiments. The stress is put on the long-time behaviour. We choose for the comparison numerical schemes which preserve the qualitative features of solutions (like periodicity). All these schemes are either symplectic maps or integrable (preserving the energy integral) maps, or both. We describe and explain systematic errors (produced by any method) in numerical computations of the period and the amplitude of oscillations. We propose a new numerical scheme which is a modification of the discrete gradient method. This discretization preserves (almost exactly) the period of small oscillations for any time step.Comment: 41 pages, including 18 figures and 4 table
