Investigation of the performance of an optimised MicroCAT, a GEM and their combination by simulations and current measurements

    Get PDF
A MicroCAT (Micro Compteur A Trous) structure which is used for avalanche charge multiplication in gas filled radiation detectors has been optimised with respect to maximum electron transparency and minimum ion feedback. We report on the charge transfer behaviour and the achievable gas gain of this device. A three-dimensional electron and ion transfer simulation is compared to results derived from electric current measurements. Similarly, we present studies of the charge transfer behaviour of a GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) by current measurements and simulations. Finally, we investigate the combination of the MicroCAT and the GEM by measurements with respect to the performance at different voltage settings, gas mixtures and gas pressures.Comment: 26 pages, 32 figure

Synthesis and first X-ray structures of cobalt(II) and cobalt(III) complexes bearing 2,4-dioxo-alkanoic acid dialkylamide ligands

The aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxy pentenes to trans-tetrahydrofurans (THFs), the Mukaiyama oxidation, has in recent years emerged as a powerful tool in synthetic chemistry. In this report we describe the first crystal structures of 2,4-dioxo-alkanoic acid dialkylamide complexes for both Co(II) and Co(III) salts. The Co(II) structures show an unprecedented arrangement of atoms, with a central Co(II)(H2O)6 flanked by two Co(II) atoms each coordinated with three anionic chelating ligands. The dimeric Co(III) structures show two anionic chelating ligands and bridging hydroxyl groups

Nature’s nations: the shared conservation history of Canada and the USA

Historians often study the history of conservation within the confines of national borders, concentrating on the bureaucratic and political manifestations of policy within individual governments. Even studies of the popular expression of conservationist ideas are generally limited to the national or sub-national (province, state, etc.) scale. This paper suggests that conservationist discourse, policy and practice in Canada and the USA were the products of a significant cross-border movement of ideas and initiatives derived from common European sources. In addition, the historical development of common approaches to conservation in North America suggests, contrary to common assumptions, that Canada did not always lag behind the USA in terms of policy innovation. The basic tenets of conservation (i.e. state control over resource, class-based disdain for subsistence hunters and utilitarian approaches to resource management) have instead developed at similar time periods and along parallel ideological paths in Canada and the USA

Improvement of the Inside-Outside Duality Method

In this paper, an improvement of the inside-outside duality method is considered. The state-of-the-art approximation of the far-field operator via constant interpolation is not sufficient to obtain highly accurate interior transmission eigenvalues especially for larger wave numbers. Therefore, several different approximations of the far-field operator such as Gaussian quadrature, spherical t-design, and Lebedev quadrature are used which are shown to yield superior accuracy for the numerical calculation of interior transmission eigenvalues

On the robustness of spin polarization for magnetic vortex accelerated proton bunches in density down-ramps

    No full text
We investigate the effect of density down-ramps on the acceleration of ions via magnetic vortex acceleration in a near-critical density gas target by means of particle-in-cell simulations. The spin-polarization of the accelerated protons is robust for a variety of ramp lengths at around 80%. Significant increase of the ramp length is accompanied by collimation of low-polarization protons into the final beam and large transverse spread of the highly polarized protons with respect to the direction of laser propagation
