Illuminating Molecular Symmetries with Bicircular High-Order-Harmonic Generation
We present a complete theory of bicircular high-order-harmonic emission from
N-fold rotationally symmetric molecules. Using a rotating frame of reference we
predict the complete structure of the high-order-harmonic spectra for arbitrary
driving frequency ratios and show how molecular symmetries can be directly
identified from the harmonic signal. Our findings reveal that a characteristic
fingerprint of rotational molecular symmetries can be universally observed in
the ultrafast response of molecules to strong bicircular fields.Comment: 7 page
Chirality distribution and transition energies of carbon nanotubes
From resonant Raman scattering on isolated nanotubes we obtained the optical
transition energies, the radial breathing mode frequency and Raman intensity of
both metallic and semiconducting tubes. We unambiguously assigned the chiral
index (n_1,n_2) of approximately 50 nanotubes based solely on a third-neighbor
tight-binding Kataura plot and find omega_RBM=214.4cm^-1nm/d+18.7cm^-1. In
contrast to luminescence experiments we observe all chiralities including
zig-zag tubes. The Raman intensities have a systematic chiral-angle dependence

Accumulation, inversion, and depletion layers in SrTiO
We study potential and electron density depth profiles in accumulation,
inversion and depletion layers in crystals with large and nonlinear dielectric
response such as . We describe the lattice dielectric
response using the Landau-Ginzburg free energy expansion. In accumulation and
inversion layers we arrive at new nonlinear dependencies of the width of
the electron gas on applied electric field . Particularly important is the
predicted electron density profile of accumulation layers (including the
interface) , where . We compare this profile with available data and find
satifactory agreement. For a depletion layer we find an unconventional
nonlinear dependence of capacitance on voltage. We also evaluate the role of
spatial dispersion in the dielectric response by adding a gradient term to the
Landau-Ginzburg free energy
An absolutely calibrated survey of polarized emission from the northern sky at 1.4 GHz
A new polarization survey of the northern sky at 1.41 GHz is presented. The
observations were carried out using the 25.6m telescope at the Dominion Radio
Astrophysical Observatory in Canada, with an angular resolution of 36 arcmin.
The data are corrected for ground radiation to obtain Stokes U and Q maps on a
well-established intensity scale tied to absolute determinations of zero
levels, containing emission structures of large angular extent, with an rms
noise of 12 mK. Survey observations were carried out by drift scanning the sky
between -29 degr and +90 degr declination. The fully sampled drift scans,
observed in steps of 0.25 degr to 2.5 degr in declination, result in a northern
sky coverage of 41.7% of full Nyquist sampling. The survey surpasses by a
factor of 200 the coverage, and by a factor of 5 the sensitivity, of the
Leiden/Dwingeloo polarization survey (Spoelstra 1972) that was until now the
most complete large-scale survey. The temperature scale is tied to the
Effelsberg scale. Absolute zero-temperature levels are taken from the
Leiden/Dwingeloo survey after rescaling those data by the factor of 0.94. The

Returns on FDI: Does the U.S. Really Do Better?
According to the U.S. external accounts, U.S. investors earn a significantly higher rate of return on their foreign investments than foreigners earn in the United States. This continued strong performance has produced a positive net investment income balance despite the deterioration in the U.S. net asset position in recent years. We examine the major competing explanations for the apparent differential between the rates of return. In particular, almost the entire difference occurs in FDI, where American firms operating abroad appear to earn a persistently higher return than that earned by foreign firms operating in the U.S. We first review a number of explanations in the literature for this differential. We then offer some new evidence on the role of income shifting between jurisdictions with varying rates of taxation. Using country-specific income and tax data, we find that about one-third of the excess return earned by U.S. corporations abroad can be explained by firms reporting "extra" income in low tax jurisdictions of their affiliates.
Analysis of the thin layer of Galactic warm ionized gas in the range 20 < l < 30 deg, -1.5 < b < +1.5 deg
We present an analysis of the thin layer of Galactic warm ionized gas at an
angular resolution ~ 10'. This is carried out using radio continuum data at 1.4
GHz, 2.7 GHz and 5 GHz in the coordinate region 20 < l < 30 deg, -1.5 < b <
+1.5 deg. For this purpose, we evaluate the zero level of the 2.7 and 5 GHz
surveys using auxiliary data at 2.3 GHz and 408 MHz. The derived zero level
corrections are T_{zero}(2.7 GHz)=0.15 +/- 0.06 K and T_{zero}(5 GHz)=0.1 +/-
0.05 K. We separate the thermal (free-free) and non-thermal (synchrotron)
component by means of a spectral analysis performed adopting an antenna
temperature spectral index -2.1 for the free-free emission, a realistic spatial
distribution of indices for the synchrotron radiation and by fitting,
pixel-by-pixel, the Galactic spectral index. We find that at 5 GHz, for |b| = 0
deg, the fraction of thermal emission reaches a maximum value of 82%, while at
1.4 GHz, the corresponding value is 68%. In addition, for the thermal emission,
the analysis indicates a dominant contribution of the diffuse component
