    Distribution and composition of macrobenthic communities along a Victoria-Land Transect (Ross Sea, Antarctica)

    The Victoria-Land Transect project onboard the Italian research vessel ‘‘Italica’’ in February 2004, was a large-scale attempt to obtain benthic samples of smaller macrozoobenthic specimens systematically along a latitudinal and a depth transect along the Victoria- Land coast. Data presented from this survey are based on Rauschert dredge samples, which were taken at four areas at depth ranging from 84 to 515 m. A cluster analysis based on relative numbers of abundance was performed and demonstrated a change in community structure depending on the location along the latitudinal transect. A change in community structure with depth was not recorded. Dominant taxa of the Ross Sea fauna along the Victoria-Land coast were the Arthropoda (65.7%), followed by Annelida (20.7%), Mollusca (9.6%) and Echinodermata (2.5%). Total number of abundance decreased with depth with an exception at Cape Russell, whereas a trend in biomass was not documented.     Low Mach Number Modeling of Type Ia Supernovae

    We introduce a low Mach number equation set for the large-scale numerical simulation of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs experiencing a thermonuclear deflagration. Since most of the interesting physics in a Type Ia supernova transpires at Mach numbers from 0.01 to 0.1, such an approach enables both a considerable increase in accuracy and savings in computer time compared with frequently used compressible codes. Our equation set is derived from the fully compressible equations using low Mach number asymptotics, but without any restriction on the size of perturbations in density or temperature. Comparisons with simulations that use the fully compressible equations validate the low Mach number model in regimes where both are applicable. Comparisons to simulations based on the more traditional anelastic approximation also demonstrate the agreement of these models in the regime for which the anelastic approximation is valid. For low Mach number flows with potentially finite amplitude variations in density and temperature, the low Mach number model overcomes the limitations of each of the more traditional models and can serve as the basis for an accurate and efficient simulation tool.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal 31 pages, 5 figures (some figures degraded in quality to conserve space

    Exploring the Cyclical Nature of Self-Regulation in Blended Learning: A Longitudinal Study

    This study discusses how students\u27 temporal, adaptive processes, and learning regulation can be understood using multi-channel data. We analyzed the behaviors of 189 students to identify a range of self-regulated learning (SRL) profiles that lead to different achievement in a large-scale undergraduate course seeing how students\u27 SRL unfold during the course, which helps understand the complicated cyclical nature of SRL. We identified three SRL profiles by administrating and analyzing the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) three times. We looked at how students adopt different SRL profiles as the course progressed through process mining and clustering techniques to clarify the cyclical nature of SRL. We demonstrated how process mining was used to identify process patterns in self-regulated learning events as captured. Analyzing sequential patterns indicated differences in students\u27 process models. It showed the added value of taking the order of learning activities into account, contributing to theory and practice

    The 8^8B Neutrino Spectrum

    Knowledge of the energy spectrum of 8^8B neutrinos is an important ingredient for interpreting experiments that detect energetic neutrinos from the Sun. The neutrino spectrum deviates from the allowed approximation because of the broad alpha-unstable 8^8Be final state and recoil order corrections to the beta decay. We have measured the total energy of the alpha particles emitted following the beta decay of 8^8B. The measured spectrum is inconsistent with some previous measurements, in particular with a recent experiment of comparable precision. The beta decay strength function for the transition from 8^8B to the accessible excitation energies in 8^8Be is fit to the alpha energy spectrum using the R-matrix approach. Both the positron and neutrino energy spectra, corrected for recoil order effects, are constructed from the strength function. The positron spectrum is in good agreement with a previous direct measurement. The neutrino spectrum disagrees with previous experiments, particularly for neutrino energies above 12 MeV.Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures, 4 tables, submitted to Phys. Rev. C, typos correcte

    X-Ray Pinhole Camera Spatial Resolution Using High Aspect Ratio LIGA Pinhole Apertures

    X ray pinhole cameras are employed to provide the transverse profile of the electron beam from which the emittance, coupling and energy spread are calculated in the storage ring of Diamond Light Source. Tungsten blades separated by shims are commonly used to form the pinhole aperture. However, this approach introduces uncertainties regarding the aperture size. X ray lithography, electroplating and moulding, known as LIGA, has been used to provide thin screens with well defined and high aspect ratio pinhole apertures. Thus, the optimal aperture size given the beam spectrum can be used to improve the spatial resolution of the pinhole camera. Experimental results using a LIGA screen of different aperture sizes have been compared to SRW Python simulations over the 15 35 keV photon energy range.
