Function-as-a-Service for the Cloud-to-Thing Continuum: A Systematic Mapping Study

    Get PDF
Until recently, Internet of Things applications were mainly seen as a means to gather sensor data for further processing in the Cloud. Nowadays, with the advent of Edge and Fog Computing, digital services are dragged closer to the physical world, with data processing and storage tasks distributed across the whole Cloud-to-Thing continuum. Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) is gaining momentum as one of the promising programming models for such digital services. This work investigates the current research landscape of applying FaaS over the Cloud-to-Thing continuum. In particular, we investigate the support offered by existing FaaS platforms for the deployment, placement, orchestration, and execution of functions across the whole continuum using the Systematic Mapping Study methodology. We selected 33 primary studies and analyzed their data, bringing a broad view on the current research landscape in the area.acceptedVersio

A distributed algorithm for semantic collectors election in wireless sensors networks

    Get PDF
Semantic clustering is a recent technique for saving energy in wireless sensor networks. Its mechanism of action consists in dividing the network into groups (clusters) formed by semantically related nodes and at least one semantic collector, which acts as a bridge between its internal nodes and the sink node. Since semantic collector nodes need to perform more tasks than normal nodes, they deplete their energy budget faster, so it is necessary to use efficient mechanisms for electing semantic collectors to prolong the network lifetime. Our hypothesis is that an effective choice of semantic collectors allows a longer network lifetime. To test it, we start from a previous work of the authors of this article and we propose an algorithm for electing semantic collectors in a distributed way based on a fuzzy inference engine. The inputs of the inference engine are the residual energy of nodes and their received signal strength indicator (RSSI). Simulation results confirm our hypothesis, since the algorithm provides (i) an improvement of 17.4% in relation to another proposal of the related literature, and (ii) a gain of 68.8% over the time life of the network’s original work. Keywords: Wireless Sensors Networks, Semantic Cluster, Semantic Collector Election

CoDeTMS: um sistema cooperativo e descentralizado para o monitoramento e divulgação das condições de trânsito utilizando redes veiculares

    No full text

BeeNotified! A Notification System of Physical Quantities for Beehives Remote Monitoring

    Get PDF
One of the ways to reduce inappropriate management of hives and monitor bee health is to send notifications/alerts about the data collected through sensors. This study presents  BeeNotified!, a solution for sending notifications through Telegram, e-mail, and SMS. The notifications warn about the level of temperature, humidity, sound, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hive weight and delay in data gathering. From this data, researchers and beekeepers can be informed and make changes in the locations of the hives, avoiding catastrophes and possible diseases. The results obtained with the processing time in the sending of messages showed that the messages sent via SMS and Telegram have a shorter processing time compared to the sending via e-mail. In regards to sending notifications according to user preferences, all notifications were sent correctly
