    A Dark Matter Candidate from an Extra (Non-Universal) Dimension

    We show that a recently constructed five-dimensional (5D) model with gauge-Higgs unification and explicit Lorentz symmetry breaking in the bulk, provides a natural dark matter candidate. This is the lightest Kaluza-Klein particle odd under a certain discrete Z_2 symmetry, which has been introduced to improve the naturalness of the model, and resembles KK-parity but is less constraining. The dark matter candidate is the first KK mode of a 5D gauge field and electroweak bounds force its mass above the TeV scale. Its pair annihilation rate is too small to guarantee the correct relic abundance; however coannihilations with colored particles greatly enhance the effective annihilation rate, leading to realistic relic densities.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures; v2: fig.1 corrected, one reference and some comments added, conclusions unchanged.     A Esclerose Lateral Amiotrófica - ELA é uma doença rara, neurodegenerativa, progressiva e incurável (com sobrevida média entre três e cinco anos), seus principais sinais e sintomas são os resultantes diretos da degeneração motoneuronal: fraqueza e atrofia, fasciculações e cãibras musculares, espasticidade, disartria, disfagia, dispneia e labilidade emocional; e os resultantes indiretos dos sintomas primários: distúrbios psicológicos, distúrbios de sono, constipação, sialorreia, espessamento de secreções mucosas, sintomas de hipoventilação crônica e dor. Entretanto, não existe um exame específico para que seja feito a caracterização da doença, levando seu diagnóstico aproximadamente um ano (uma vez que o prognóstico da doença é grave e existem muitas doenças que se manifestam de maneira similar, bem como é comum o paciente procurar uma segunda opinião médica)

    Communities and regularities in the behavior of investment fund managers

    We analyze a large microlevel dataset on the full daily portfolio holdings and exposures of 22 complex investment funds to shed light on the behavior of professional investment fund managers. We introduce a set of quantitative attributes that capture essential distinctive features of manager allocation strategies and behaviors. These characteristics include turnover, attitude toward hedging, portfolio concentration, and reaction to external events, such as changes in market conditions and flows of funds. We find the existence and stability of three main investment attitude profiles: conservative, reactive, and proactive. The conservative profile shows low turnover and resilience against external shocks; the reactive one is more prone to respond to market condition changes; and members of the proactive profile frequently adjust their portfolio allocations, but their behavior is less affected by market conditions. We find that exogenous shocks temporarily alter this configuration, but communities return to their original state once these external shocks have been absorbed and their effects vanish

    Myoblasts and macrophages share molecular components that contribute to cell–cell fusion

    Cell–cell fusion is critical to the normal development of certain tissues, yet the nature and degree of conservation of the underlying molecular components remains largely unknown. Here we show that the two guanine-nucleotide exchange factors Brag2 and Dock180 have evolutionarily conserved functions in the fusion of mammalian myoblasts. Their effects on muscle cell formation are distinct and are a result of the activation of the GTPases ARF6 and Rac, respectively. Inhibition of ARF6 activity results in a lack of physical association between paxillin and β1-integrin, and disruption of paxillin transport to sites of focal adhesion. We show that fusion machinery is conserved among distinct cell types because Dock180 deficiency prevented fusion of macrophages and the formation of multinucleated giant cells. Our results are the first to demonstrate a role for a single protein in the fusion of two different cell types, and provide novel mechanistic insight into the function of GEFs in the morphological maturation of multinucleated cells

    MoS2 Nanocube structures as catalysts for electrochemical H2 evolution from acidic aqueous solutions

    Core–shell PMMA–Au nanocube structures made by a combination of nanoimprint lithography and sidewall deposition were used as template for electrodeposition of MoS2, Ni, and Pt. Linear sweep voltammetry experiments obtained in an aqueous solution containing 0.29 M H2SO4 (pH 0.24) showed that the onset potential of the core–shell–shell PMMA–Au–MoS2 nanocube electrode for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) was shifted to the positive direction (i.e., requiring a lower overpotential) by 20–40 mV compared to planar MoS2 films. This indicates that the nanocube electrodes have a significantly increased HER activity, which is probably because of a higher density of catalytically active edge sites available at the nanocube surface. It was also found that the HER activity initially increased with increasing MoS2 deposition time, but decreased after deposition for 60 min because the edges of the nanocubes became rounded, thereby decreasing the number of active edge sites. By depositing Ni and Pt on top of PMMA–Au nanocubes, it was shown that this method can also be used for the synthesis of nanocube structures with varying compositions
