Site assessment of Douglas Shoal ship grounding in the Great Barrier Reef
The bulk carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground on Douglas Shoal in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in April 2010. At over 40 hectares, this is the largest ship grounding scar known in the Great Barrier Reef, and possibly the largest reef-related grounding in the world. Challenges for assessment of the site included its large scale and the remote nature of Douglas Shoal coupled with its high exposure to wind, wave conditions and fauna that may pose safety hazards. Marine surveys used multiple and novel methods including sediment sampling combined with visual and acoustic survey techniques
Constraining warm dark matter with cosmic shear power spectra
We investigate potential constraints from cosmic shear on the dark matter
particle mass, assuming all dark matter is made up of light thermal relic
particles. Given the theoretical uncertainties involved in making cosmological
predictions in such warm dark matter scenarios we use analytical fits to linear
warm dark matter power spectra and compare (i) the halo model using a mass
function evaluated from these linear power spectra and (ii) an analytical fit
to the non-linear evolution of the linear power spectra. We optimistically
ignore the competing effect of baryons for this work. We find approach (ii) to
be conservative compared to approach (i). We evaluate cosmological constraints
using these methods, marginalising over four other cosmological parameters.
Using the more conservative method we find that a Euclid-like weak lensing
survey together with constraints from the Planck cosmic microwave background
mission primary anisotropies could achieve a lower limit on the particle mass
of 2.5 keV.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures, minor changes to match the version accepted for

Constraints on cosmological models from strong gravitational lensing systems
Strong lensing has developed into an important astrophysical tool for probing
both cosmology and galaxies (their structure, formation, and evolution). Using
the gravitational lensing theory and cluster mass distribution model, we try to
collect a relatively complete observational data concerning the Hubble constant
independent ratio between two angular diameter distances from
various large systematic gravitational lens surveys and lensing by galaxy
clusters combined with X-ray observations, and check the possibility to use it
in the future as complementary to other cosmological probes. On one hand,
strongly gravitationally lensed quasar-galaxy systems create such a new
opportunity by combining stellar kinematics (central velocity dispersion
measurements) with lensing geometry (Einstein radius determination from
position of images). We apply such a method to a combined gravitational lens
data set including 70 data points from Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) and Lens
Structure and Dynamics survey (LSD). On the other hand, a new sample of 10
lensing galaxy clusters with redshifts ranging from 0.1 to 0.6 carefully
selected from strong gravitational lensing systems with both X-ray satellite
observations and optical giant luminous arcs, is also used to constrain three
dark energy models (CDM, constant and CPL) under a flat universe
assumption. For the full sample () and the restricted sample ()
including 36 two-image lenses and 10 strong lensing arcs, we obtain relatively
good fitting values of basic cosmological parameters, which generally agree
with the results already known in the literature. This results encourages
further development of this method and its use on larger samples obtained in
the future.Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables; accepted by JCA
