In this bulletin Rees reported the occurrence in the state of 31 species, representing 4 genera, and discussed their biology, distribution, life history and importance. Subsequent publications by Rees (1944), Rees and Nielsen (1951, 1955), Nielsen and Rees (1959) and Richards et al. (1956) have added to the knowlgdge of the mosquito fauna of this state. A total of 45 species has been reported in the literature as occurring in Utah. Of this number five are records which the authors consider invalid or of uncertain status. These are discussed by Nielsen and Rees (1959). At present the known Utah mosquito fauna consists of 40 species, representing 6 genera. A list of the Utah species with their relative abundance is presented in Table I

    Priming scalar and ad hoc enrichment in children

    Sentences can be enriched by considering what the speaker does not say but could have done. Children, however, struggle to derive one type of such enrichments, scalar implicatures. A popular explanation for this, the lexical alternatives account, is that they do not have lexical knowledge of the appropriate alternatives to generate the implicature. Namely, children are unaware of the scalar relationship between some and all. We conducted a priming study with N = 72 children, aged 5;1 years, and an adult sample, N = 51, to test this hypothesis. Participants were exposed to prime trials of strong, alternative, or weak sentences involving scalar or ad hoc expressions, and then saw a target trial that could be interpreted in either way. Consistent with previous studies, children were reluctant to derive scalar implicatures. However, there were two novel findings. (1) Children responded with twice the rate of ad hoc implicature responses than adults, suggesting that the implicature was the developmentally prior interpretation for ad hoc expressions. (2) Children showed robust priming effects, suggesting that children are aware of the scalar relationship between some and all, even if they choose not to derive the implicature. This suggests that the root cause of the scalar implicature deficit is not due to the absence of lexical knowledge of the relationship between some and all

    Neural correlates of the 'good life': eudaimonic well-being is associated with insular cortex volume.

    Eudaimonic well-being reflects traits concerned with personal growth, self-acceptance, purpose in life and autonomy (among others) and is a substantial predictor of life events, including health. Although interest in the aetiology of eudaimonic well-being has blossomed in recent years, little is known of the underlying neural substrates of this construct. To address this gap in our knowledge, here we examined whether regional gray matter (GM) volume was associated with eudaimonic well-being. Structural magnetic resonance images from 70 young, healthy adults who also completed Ryff's 42-item measure of the six core facets of eudaimonia, were analysed with voxel-based morphometry techniques. We found that eudaimonic well-being was positively associated with right insular cortex GM volume. This association was also reflected in three of the sub-scales of eudaimonia: personal growth, positive relations and purpose in life. Positive relations also showed a significant association with left insula volume. No other significant associations were observed, although personal growth was marginally associated with left insula, and purpose in life exhibited a marginally significant negative association with middle temporal gyrus GM volume. These findings are the first to our knowledge linking eudaimonic well-being with regional brain structure

    Expanding Space: the Root of all Evil?

    While it remains the staple of virtually all cosmological teaching, the concept of expanding space in explaining the increasing separation of galaxies has recently come under fire as a dangerous idea whose application leads to the development of confusion and the establishment of misconceptions. In this paper, we develop a notion of expanding space that is completely valid as a framework for the description of the evolution of the universe and whose application allows an intuitive understanding of the influence of universal expansion. We also demonstrate how arguments against the concept in general have failed thus far, as they imbue expanding space with physical properties not consistent with the expectations of general relativity.Comment: 8 pages, accepted for publication in PAS

    An examination of patients' responses to framework breaks in psychotherapy in an institutional context

    This study examines the workings of the ground rules which make up the framework of psychotherapy, in an institutional context, by analysing transcripts of twelve audio taped sessions of therapy conducted in a psychiatric hospital. The breaks in the ground rules of the sessions are noted and the patients' responses to these breaks are analysed using Langs's (1982, 1988) method for decoding patients' material, suitably modified for use as a hermeneutic research method. Although all of the ground rules are broken in the institutional context, only one of the ten ground rules appears to be essentially affected by this particular institutional context. Other ground rules are broken out of choice of technique or through error. The institutional context has a structural impact only on the ground rule requiring a one to one relationship with privacy and confidentiality and this ground rule is transgressed in a number of ways in all twelve sessions examined in this study. However the patients' responses to this breach only occur in ways predicted by communicative theory when the break in the ground rule involves actual entry into the therapy space by another person. Other contraventions to this ground rule that do not involve such an entry do not elicit the predicted patient responses. The many other ground rule breaks occurring in the institutional context evoke the predicted responses in the patients' material. In the study, no therapist interventions are found to comply with the communicative therapy requirements for sound interventions; concomitantly it was found that no therapist interventions receive the required derivative validation. The results indicate that it is possible to conduct therapy of a substantially secure frame variety in this institutional context with minimum effort on the part of therapists and given proper training and supervision of therapists in the techniques of communicative psychotherapy. Furthermore the results lend weight to the importance of the communicative methodology for listening to patients' material in psychotherapy in an institutional context. However, further rigorous study of competently performed therapy, executed within the context of a secure frame within an institutional context, is needed in order to demonstrate the benefits of the communicative psychotherapy interventions and interpretations in this context

    A small source in Q2237+0305 ?

    Microlensing in Q2237+0305 between 1985 and 1995 (eg. Irwin et al. 1989; Corrigan et al. 1991; Ostensen et al. 1996) has been interpreted in two different ways; as microlensing by stellar mass objects of a continuum source having dimensions significantly smaller than the microlens Einstein radius (ER) (eg. Wambsganss, Paczynski & Schneider 1990; Rauch & Blandford 1991), and as microlensing by very low mass objects of a source as large as 5 ER (Refsdal & Stabell 1993; Haugan 1996). In this paper we present evidence in favour of a small source. Limits on the source size (in units of ER) are obtained from the combination of limits on the number of microlens Einstein radii crossed by the source during the monitoring period with two separate light-curve features. Firstly, recently published monitoring data (Wozniak et al. 2000; OGLE web page) show large variations (~0.8-1.5 magnitudes) between image brightnesses over a period of 700 days or ~15% of the monitoring period. Secondly, the 1988 peak in the image A light-curve had a duration that is a small fraction (<0.02) of the monitoring period. Such rapid microlensing rises and short microlensing peaks only occur for small sources. We find that the observed large-rapid variation limits the source size to be <0.2 ER (95% confidence). The width of the light-curve peak provides a stronger constraint of <0.02 ER (99% confidence). The Einstein radius (projected into the source plane) of the average microlens mass (m) in Q2237+0305 is ER ~ 10^{17}\sqrt{m} cm. The interpretation that stars are responsible for microlensing in Q2237+0305 therefore results in limits on the continuum source size that are consistent with current accretion disc theory.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in M.N.R.A.
