    Avalanche noise characteristics of single Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As(0.3

    Avalanche multiplication and excess noise have been measured on a series of Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As-GaAs and GaAs-Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As (x=0.3,0.45, and 0.6) single heterojunction p/sup +/-i-n/sup +/ diodes. In some devices excess noise is lower than in equivalent homojunction devices with avalanche regions composed of either of the constituent materials, the heterojunction with x=0.3 showing the greatest improvement. Excess noise deteriorates with higher values of x because of the associated increase in hole ionization in the Al/sub x/Ga/sub 1-x/As layer. It also depends critically upon the carrier injection conditions and Monte Carlo simulations show that this dependence results from the variation in the degree of noisy feedback processes on the position of the injected carriers

    Multiplication and excess noise characteristics of thin 4H-SiC UV avalanche photodiodes

    The avalanche multiplication and excess noise characteristics of thin 4H-SiC avalanche photodiodes with an i-region width of 0.1 µm have been investigated. The diodes are found to exhibit multiplication characteristics which change significantly when the wavelength of the illuminating light changes from 230 to 365 nm. These multiplication characteristics show unambiguously that β > α in 4H-SiC and that the β/α ratio remains large even in thin 4H-SiC diodes. Low excess noise, corresponding to k=0.1 in the local model where k=α/β for hole injection, was measured using 325-nm light. The results indicate that 4H-SiC is a suitable material for realizing low-noise UV avalanche photodiodes requiring good visible-blind performance

    We study families of semidefinite programs (SDPs) that depend nonlinearly on a small number of "external" parameters. Such families appear universally in numerical bootstrap computations. The traditional method for finding an optimal point in parameter space works by first solving an SDP with fixed external parameters, then moving to a new point in parameter space and repeating the process. Instead, we unify solving the SDP and moving in parameter space in a single algorithm that we call "skydiving". We test skydiving on some representative problems in the conformal bootstrap, finding significant speedups compared to traditional methods

    The detection of aquatic animal species using environmental DNA – a review of eDNA as a survey tool in ecology

    1. Knowledge of species distribution is critical to ecological management and conservation biology. Effective management requires the detection of populations, which can sometimes be at low densities and is usually based on visual detection and counting. 2. Recently, there has been considerable interest in the detection of short species-specific environmental DNA (eDNA) fragments to allow aquatic species monitoring within different environments due to the potential of greater sensitivity over traditional survey methods which can be time-consuming and costly. 3. Environmental DNA analysis is increasingly being used in the detection of rare or invasive species and has also been applied to eDNA persistence studies and estimations of species biomass and distribution. When combined with next-generation sequencing methods, it has been demonstrated that entire faunas can be identified. 4. Different environments require different sampling methodologies, but there remain areas where laboratory methodologies could be standardized to allow results to be compared across studies. 5. Synthesis and applications. We review recently published studies that use eDNA to moni- tor aquatic populations, discuss the methodologies used and the application of eDNA analysis as a survey tool in ecology. We include innovative ideas for how eDNA can be used for conservation and management citing test cases, for instance, the potential for on-site analyses, including the application of eDNA analysis to carbon nanotube platforms or laser transmission spectroscopy to facilitate rapid on-site detections. The use of eDNA monitoring is already being adopted in the UK for ecological surveys

    GeneXplorer: an interactive web application for microarray data visualization and analysis

    BACKGROUND: When publishing large-scale microarray datasets, it is of great value to create supplemental websites where either the full data, or selected subsets corresponding to figures within the paper, can be browsed. We set out to create a CGI application containing many of the features of some of the existing standalone software for the visualization of clustered microarray data. RESULTS: We present GeneXplorer, a web application for interactive microarray data visualization and analysis in a web environment. GeneXplorer allows users to browse a microarray dataset in an intuitive fashion. It provides simple access to microarray data over the Internet and uses only HTML and JavaScript to display graphic and annotation information. It provides radar and zoom views of the data, allows display of the nearest neighbors to a gene expression vector based on their Pearson correlations and provides the ability to search gene annotation fields. CONCLUSIONS: The software is released under the permissive MIT Open Source license, and the complete documentation and the entire source code are freely available for download from CPAN
